Turkey has a lot to gain from a Kurdish state on the south of their border. Would take a lot of the heat out of the domestic Kurdish insurgency, and they could even play the Kurds against each others even more. Of course, it could also be a massive liability. I for one would be so happy about a Kurdish state, maybe it could be That Other Place in the Middle East that isn't poo poo by default

Maliki essentially broke from the US years ago, possibly before we'd even completely left. What may confuse people is that him not listening to a drat word the US gov has said has not prevented or even slowed us down from handing him a bunch of free stuff, but Iraq's not alone in that regard. The Kurdish thing is a lot less cut and dry than y'all are making it sound. I find it implausible that Erdogan has really flipped from airstriking the Kurds to suddenly wanting them as neighbors in just a matter of weeks, but Erdogan's coming apart at the seams as is and it's somewhat hopeless to make sense of him. Similarly there are so many internal divisions and disagreements between the Turkish-side PKK, the non-PKK Kurdish Turks, Iraqi and Persian and Syrian Turks etc etc etc; I've had Kurds personally try to explain it to me and there were so many simultaneously contradicting narratives swirling around it's nearly as bad as the Arabs. Keep in mind the PKK are also nationalist socialists (or were, depending on who you ask, who may give you a different answer 15 minutes later.)
