Game Mechanics and FAQ or: how I learned to stop worrying and skipped this post to start posting M.O.? Is that they're good... Once it escalated into a murder one beef for all of 'em after they killed the first two guards, they didn't hesitate. Teabag guard number three because... what difference does it make? From Captain Swing if you really care about gettin gud you should read SA poster John Murdoch’s Payday 2 guide for beginners if you haven't. Many of the mechanics of this game are not explained very well or blatantly misleading, such as many many skill descriptions, but thankfully many brave goons have thrown themselves into the depths of to bring the facts to us. What is the Long Guide people keep talking about? It's a ~30,000 word document detailing exactly how the game mechanics work from people who delve into the code. Many goons have long sections committed to memory and quote it as if it was a holy document. Seriously. If you find yourself looking at it, you might want to seek therapy. ---------------------------------------- I’m new, what skills/class/perks should I get first?!? First of all, after a few heists look at the "Perk Deck" tab in the skills menu. Equip the Armorer or Crew Chief deck and stick with that until you have it maxxed out. By the time you have finished one of those two, you will probably know enough about the game mechanics to figure out what to do next, but either of those are a solid first pick. Make sure you stick with one because there are EXP bonuses in the perk decks now. Plan Z posted:Guide to using the Grindr Perk Deck For skills:

Free Updates Multiple free guns, mods and masks are yours if you join the Official Payday 2 Steam group Charlie Santa GO Bank update- a pretty bad heist that showed how good Overkill is at reusing assets The Infamy Update- added a prestige system to the game for all your xp grinding needs. Get some sweet sunglasses! The Death Wish Update- Added a new difficulty level, DEATHWISH for all your masochistic needs. Only play Deathwish if you hate yourself (2EZ represent ). This update also added a boost system for heists so you get more or less EXP depending on how often you have played that heist. Also a boost to your next heist when you finished a stealth mission was added. See second post for details. The Election Day Heist- a fantastic heist that really showed that Overkill CAN make a decent stealth map that also has a great plan B The Shadow Raid Heist- Stealth-only map where you rob some PMC’s of the poo poo they stole from wherever they were deployed. Good fun for the stealth guys but brutal if you mess up because there is no Plan B. The Big Fat Music Update!!- Overkill took one of the best parts about this game, the great soundtrack from Simon Viklund, and made it even better. You can now control exactly how and when all the music in the game plays for each heist. Also if you own the soundtrack to Payday: The Heist, you also get all of that music to use in-game also! And you can sync your soundtrack to the host if you don't own any music DLC. Aside from one small tease, this update was completely unexpected and totally awesome. Crimefest- A bunch of free community dlcs that are locked behind stretch goals of how many people join the official Payday 2 group (Please join the official payday 2 group). Since it doesn't matter if you have the game or not, a botnet was immediately started up but Overkill doesn't care because they just want to look good to investors! Snarkiness aside, many cool things await us in Crimefest, including Old Hoxton Breakout heist and Old Hox playable character. Fellis fucked around with this message at 06:23 on Feb 20, 2015 |

Anything dire or obvious I should change? The point in Martial arts should really be in Cat Burglar instead, it is a crazy useful skill. Die hard is really not necessary for that build, I would say put the 4 points into Inside Man aced for loud utility (buying expert drivers to prevent escapes) or Ace Shinobi and put a point into Cleaner for stealth utility. Here is a level 40 build that anyone should aim for, it has all the best low level skills that should be a part of most builds and at level 40 you probably have a good number of heists under your belt and have unlocked all the weapons: http://www.pd2skills.info/#/profile/level-40-build-2/

Die Hard Ace is for people who expect to be under fire a lot, but that build is actually going to be under fire quite a bit so I disagree that it's wasted points. Might be better elsewhere though. There's no shotgun skills so you're not going to be the big damage-soaking thicky of the team, most likely. I do feel like Spotter over Inside Man is a really questionable choice though. Aced Combat Doctor isn't BAD, but I will also that that I very rarely see a successful team that has need of that much healing, even on Death Wish. The Martial Arts point should absolutely be in Cat Burglar though, Cat Burglar is just fantastic. I also think Inspire builds tend to undervalue Combat Medic since the +30% health it gives works with Inspires and as an Inspirer you're going to be doing basically every revive ever. I picked up this game in the sale and it's pretty fun. A little slow-paced and grindy, but that's okay. I've been going heavy into Ghost since I like the idea of being the stealth guy who does objectives and takes out cops with a few well-placed shots while they're preoccupied. Haven't had much luck getting people to play with, though, and while I haven't had many total shitheel pubbies most of them are no more competent than I am and that means heists rarely get done. I should probably join the goon group or whatever. I really like the music in this game. The loud techno assault wave tracks fit well and the way they build up at the start of each assault is cool.

Definitely join the goon group. It's the best gaming experience I've had in years, outside of my LPs. Be aware with Ghost: stealth and combat do not really mix together in this game at all. There's pre-alarm, there's post-alarm. That's it. The Ghost tree is kind of schizophrenic in that the lower tiers are INSANELY useful for a lot of people, and like the upper half of the entire tree is mostly bullshit and worthless. I can't think of a single skill on tier 5 that is worth the points you put into them. So be ready to branch into another tree by level 40 or so, in order to not be totally useless when a heist goes hot. e: I went ahead and tagged most of the stuff that isn't lovely as hell in Ghost. http://goo.gl/1RJeVY That will get you to the top tier, at which point you can pick up Camera Loop, which is good in all of one map, if you really really want to. Half of them are fine. That's as far as I would go. I've been kicked before finishing heists and verbally harassed by pubbies. It was so bad that I switched to host only unless a friend set up a lobby. People were incredibly toxic at times. I've met some cool players, but there's a lot of sewage to wade through. Hm, ok, I took out Die Hard, and replaced Martial Arts with Cat Burglar and Spotter with Inside Man aced. Leaves me 4 points that I'm probably gonna use for some of the stuff suggested by you, the dangerous and powerful outlaws. Looking at the trees, there's some other stuff that looks interesting to me: Aced cat burglar, with the super fall protection and halved custody time, seems pretty good to me. Also, SMG specialist, because I like using single shot primaries and SMGs are a nice offhand for that. Anyone have any thoughts on these?

Die Hard 1 point with Nerves of Steel aced is seriously fun, you get to actually contribute heavily while downed and can pop heads like a boss. If you ace Nerves of Steel, may as well have one point in Die Hard so you can pop heads with your primary while you're downed.

you guys, I just figured out how to make the Sentry Gun actually kind of useful. Remember in Payday: The Heist, where you use a sentry in the Mercy Hospital map, and it suppresses the civs? Have sentries be able to do that. Boom, sentries are now situationally very, very useful.

Like a previous poster said, Go Bank is the only time I've ever thought 'drat I wish there was a faster picker here' since using the saw on that map is a 100% crapshoot to ALARM CITY and a trip through the sewers. Original Banks have 4 guards and you have all the time in the world to saw/C4 poo poo open, the armored truck missions can be sawed open with maybe 1 reload and I haven't played framing frame in a while but I'm pretty sure that's saw city also. If I bring a saw, usually someone has C4 (or will bring ammo so I can bring the C4) and whatever doofus with the lockpick skills can go gently caress himself.

There are only a few missions where ECM Overdrive is useful, and lockpicking skills are only useful on the one map that has been explicitly designed to cater to it, and that map is so unrewarding that barely anyone ever plays it. If they were 1/3 skills I could see the argument for them, but as 4/8 skills they are mammothly overpriced. Truthfully for as relatively small a part as stealth plays in this game, I would really expect the 4/8 skills to be something as universally useful as 'civilians and guards must now fill up 2 detected bars to actually see you'. With an ace of 'now cameras have to do that too.' Coolguye fucked around with this message at 07:28 on Jul 1, 2014 |

It was in the No Mercy DLC map that OKS did in cooperation with Valve. However, it only shows when you successfully stealth the place. At one point, Bain gives you dummy sentries to keep people down while you switch into scrubs.
