You should try it, it's a real buzz.
It would be a weird tour if Froome suddenly dropped out.

Malteni, the beer of champion

Doctor Michele Ferrari about Paris Roubaix posted:

A total of 51,000 meters of pavé, with five or six stones every meter, is about 250,000-300,000 hammer blows on the legs of each rider.
At 40 km/h, that's an average of 10-12 blows per second, a constant vibration that leaves its mark on the entire body: neck, hands, arms, back and even the blood circulation get extremely stressed from the outside.

Look at the arms of the rider at 79sec for a visual description of those hammer blows. (thanks Pocket for the video)

Cancellara: The cobbles are going to be carnage

Cancellara (The king of Cobbles) posted:

"The cobbles are going to be carnage. I hope not, but we've got to be ready for it...It won’t be like a Classics race in April, it'll be completely different,
...It might actually be even faster on the pavé because as we've seen in this Tour, the teams of the overall contenders have really controlled the racing. I'm sure it'll be the same before the cobbles.

Yeah he's one of the France2 TDF motorbike commentators, eyes on the ground kinda thing. RIP all the collarbones. It's a bit of a vicious cycle in that the peloton is going to be more frantic now it's wet as the GC guys fight to stay at the front and therefore crashes are more likely. I can see froome losing time today thanks to sky's lack of race craft though I guess they have eisel to help him.

Thomas isnt exactly rubbish at classics either. I think today is going to be great and that a big hitter is going to crash heavily.

Apr 28, 2006
Indeed, Geraint Thomas is quite good on cobbles, he did better than Wiggins in Paris-Roubaix, he finished 7, 8 in Tour of Flanders and 3 E3 Harelbeke this year.

Of all the GC favourites, Talansky and to a lesser extend Valverde are the strongest on cobbles, if they want to have a real chance at yellow in Paris, they will have to make a move today.

Not only this but they do credit every motorbike camera team, both pilot and cameraman, on the final stage. Not sure if they do the copter crew as well.

Sad they are doing this but it's still better than a dry race on cobbles, where the riders would have avoided most of it by riding on the side.

Is there really any point to the cobbles, other than a gleeful audience watching riders fall? I just don't see the fascination with the winner of the tour being decided by which riders are lucky enough to avoid crashing.

Riding over cobbles is a skill. That's why you see so many of the same guys in the top 10 of Paris-Roubaix every year.

Fully expect a few GC riders to crack and fold once they hit the cobbles. Interestingly, Froome is the only GC contender (unless you count Rui Costa) to ever have raced the Paris-Roubaix, although he never finished the race.
