Black Hole is the only Gottlieb I really care about in any way and even then if I want to play an early 80s table I'll pick Firepower every time.

Also, I had a pretty good (for me) game on Bride of Pin*Bot earlier where I got Metamorphasis twice and nailed the billion point shot:

It's probably small potatoes compared to most of the people in this thread but it was really satisfying considering I've only really been playing pinball for a week and this was my fourth? time on this table. :3:

It's weird to see everyone making GBS threads on Season 2 when that's the one with Centaur. I don't really care for it aside from the art, but I thought it was supposed to be one of the best tables ever, or something?

I'd say at least pick up the Firepower/Dr. Dude pack. Firepower is a table that hates you but rewards persistence, and Dr. Dude is one of those tables I can't help but love for the theme alone. It's just such a perfect piece of early '90s kitsch. Even if the theme doesn't do it for you, it plays decently, at worst.

They all offer some good and bad, so it's a tough call. I like 3 of the 4 tables in the Avengers Chronicles pack, but I can probably say that about all the others, too.
For single tables, Captain America is probably the most like a physical table if that's your thing. I also really enjoyed Ms Splosion Man (I can see lots hating it though - the theme is pretty weird and it's very easy), Fantastic Four, and Paranormal. Mars is interesting, but with some utter bullshit wizard mode shots.

Unless you're in a big hurry though, wait for a sale. They go on special fairly often.

How, exactly, do y'all avoid SDTMs?

Kliff
Feb 7, 2009

Forgotten by everyone? Kanako's fault.
Nudge and flip. You want to at least try to hit the ball with the tip so that you have a chance of changing its trajectory if not outright flipping it away - it'll be out of control depending on how late you hit the ball with the flipper, but it's better than sitting and letting it drain.

breaks
May 12, 2001

On most tables, don't miss and it won't go SDTM. :)

If the ball looks to be going SDTM and is along a wall or can be hit with some part of the playfield to get it to a safer place, nudging to accomplish that is usually the best idea.

Any other preventative measures you can take are also good. Some shots tend to go SDTM if you miss from one flipper but are much safer with the other. Some you just never want to shoot at all unless you really have to or it's worth a shitload of points. You just have to learn that stuff on a table by table basis.

If all else has failed you can try to nudge to save it. On the video games you usually just want to flip the left flipper and nudge right or flip the right flipper and nudge left, trying to time it so that you whack the ball with the flipper.

On a real machine there is more of a judgement to make about how much of a nudge you need. If possible you'd really rather slap save, basically flipping and giving the machine a whack to move the flipper over a bit without moving the tilt bob around much. If it's too close to the middle you may need to slide the machine and hope it goes smoothly enough not to get the bob going too much. Don't halfass it and end up rocking the machine. It's more likely to tilt than a smooth slide and less effective.

Is anyone running into camera problems on High Roller Casino? Sometimes I get it halfway up the middle ramp and the camera moves toward the roulette table but it doesn't make it through and falls back down the ramp but the camera doesn't follow the ball. So you've got the zoomed in shot of the roulette table with the flippers out of camera view.

It happens a lot with many tables in TPA. Probably the way it handles camera changes are through hotspot triggers.

Yeah, this was their second one.

It's good! BB is my favorite pinball spot outside of Pinballz. They've got a dedicated owner/operator and he really puts a lot of effort into adding/maintaining machines. He even has custom signs for the little upstairs alcove dedicated to pinball. Prices are fair too and the match game % isn't dialed in at some ridiculous number.

Next months event was actually published in the Austin Chronicle, so it might have a bigger turnout.

Not at this one unfortunately, they have done it in the past though. Fortunately it's not too crowded so you don't have to hover or step back.

Pros:
That table holds some sentimental and nostalgic value to me
I like the theme and gameplay
New ROM available with updated ruleset looks really cool
Seems like a good price

Cons:
I don't know anything about pinball ownership and maintenance sounds intimidating
I live 5 miles away from a really well maintained location with great pins (MM, Spiderman, ToM) and about 40 minutes away from another location with 10 great pins (TAF, Whodunnit, T2, Williams Indiana Jones, Simpsons Pinball Party)
I have a baby and plan to have more kids
Maybe I get bored with it after a few months?

Buying a pin isn't a lifetime commitment. If you get bored of it in a few months, sell it or trade it. Unless you're planning to beat the poo poo out of it, it's going to retain it's value fine.

You put a want ad on Pinside or Craigslist and say you want to trade it for another one. Maybe even with the well-maintained location with great pins. They're pretty easy to find buyers for and people who want to trade, especially a popular license like Star Wars.

It should. The problem isn't the width, it's the height. Since they decided to get creative with the backbox, you can't properly strap the sonofabitch to one of those trolleys you need with stairs as steep and hallways as narrow as we have. So you've got to write down where every single plug goes for every part of the units in the backboard (so that's MPU, sound, a few other miscellaneous CPU components, and the entirety of the SS display), completely take the thing apart, then carry the poo poo down and put it all back together. Took my dad and me the better part of an afternoon.

I didn't know squat about machines and have been able to hold my own maintenance wise so far. There are a ton of good guides out there that walk you through what to do. And almost any problem has an existing thread on Pinside with how to fix it or you can create a new one and a bunch of people will chime in to help.

As others have said, it should be rather easy to sell/trade if you don't want it any longer. Especially a theme like Star Wars that draws interest from beyond just Pinball fans. Just make sure it doesn't have any issues that would be real expensive to fix (board damage) or is missing a part that is irreplaceable.

I also need 3 toppers to the bumpers up top as the machine my father bought didn't come with any its in cherry shape otherwise. Picked up from the Cleveland Coin Machine.

Doing all of the standard goals in one shot for most tables is pretty feasible from what I can recall. Getting 3 is usually super easy. You're probably solidly competent at the least!

The standard goals usually don't have a lot of special requirements that you have to be making a point of getting. (Counter-example: I think the Attack From Mars standard goals include "get a super jackpot", which is difficult.) I (not to brag, because I'm not that good) did all the standard goals for High Speed on my first game. I do wish there were a way to go back and look at what they were once you've finished them, though.

In other tables, I finally got the crossover achievement in Taxi, but I think I did it wrong. Instead of shooting one ball up each airport ramp at the same time, I missed with one of them, and hit Vlad's area on the left. When it shot out of there, I guess it can count as one of the two balls for the crossover in the middle of the habitrails. :shobon:

The really notable exception I think most people will be aware of is getting the Harem multiball in TotAN - it's something you have to explicitly work towards in order to achieve, and it's actually harder than most of the wizard goals.

Depends on the game. I got all the standard and wizard goals for Scared Stiff in a single game - of course, it didn't count because you have to finish the game where you finished the standard goals before you can start working on the wizard ones. Annoying.

Tried for an hour or two last night. Am pretty consistently breaking 1M, and got as high as 1.8M last night, but that's not really close. Best was 2.6 a couple months ago without really trying. I'm getting way better at it - it's just a hard one, and (for me) a rather annoying table anyway. I'll get there.

Scared Stiff has at least one wizard goal that's a bit of a pain. Collecting all the drat awards on the spider wheel. It's doable since games on that table can last a stupid long time, but it gets frustrating as Hell if you repeatedly screw up and select items that you've already chosen. The resulting Spider Mania mode is pretty drat fun though.

I have the worst aim with the spider wheel. I'm real good at picking awards that are two spaces apart, so there's one unlit between them. I wind up with a half-lit wheel and keep landing on ones I've already gotten. :argh:
