I've been exploring everywhere regardless, the linearity means you're never punished for going off the path, it's designed that way, so if there's a vertical tunnel and you're supposed to go forward into the next room, you can drop all the way down too, and maybe it'll loop back or maybe it'll lead to secret rooms and stuff.

But it also means no sequence breaking (that I'm aware of) so this is more on the Fusion side of Metroid, but without a computer giving you 10 minute essays on what to do.

So I finished LIMBO, cool game, some of the near end levels where pretty difficult but overall a satisfying ending. Then I learn that there's a secret level hidden in one of the chapters and holy poo poo is it some impossible poo poo:

New Hero Siege DLC is out! It's just under $5 right now. Looks like an extra level, the Early Access Alpha of Multiplayer and a new class. Some other do-dads thrown in there too with hats and skins.

I tried to try the multiplayer, but I couldn't get it to let me register. I gotta think co-op Hero Siege would be pretty fun though.

It has local co-op, the best co-op :v:. But yeah I'm pretty stoked to give it another try though I'll wait for the DLC to drop in price, the game was on sale for $0.89 a couple weeks ago

There'll be a lesser-priced version of the DLC, with just the cosmetic stuff removed, releasing soon.

I've tried it for a bit, and I think the changes are mostly positive, with just a couple bugs to work out.

It's disproportionately large compared to the customer base. I guess you can say that the PC gamers there are more dedicated on average, which makes sense. A smart video game company would find a way to leverage that dedication. The Japanese industry just doesn't give a poo poo. There are still a lot of companies and executives over there who think PCs are the source of all evil and somehow having a digital version available will increase piracy. Because downloading = piracy. Most of the PC publishing that happens with companies like Square Enix and Sega happen almost exclusively within their US branches, often to the disdain of their Japanese branches.

Hah, small wonder SCEA/SCEE rightfully told SCEJ to rightfully gently caress off when it comes to the PS4.

Even the piracy argument doesn't fly unless they are telling me Steam sales doesn't work in Japan like the rest of the world do. A million PC copies of Skyrim Legendary Edition not moved there for $20 each is still a respectable $20M.

Does Japan even care about games like Skyrim? Maybe the games that sell big on Steam just don't in Japan.

edit: when you look at the big name Japanese devs on Steam, it's all stuff with a big Western focus.

You are talking about a country where almost the entire telco industry thought the iPhone will never be successful there. One of them, however, tested the waters and it became a runaway hit and into complete, utter domination.

Saying there is easily untapped potential ripe for the picking for PC gaming with Steam for Japan is probably not an overstatement IMO.

VN's are slowly getting ported over to Steam, and once the other VN companies see the insane sales they can expect during the Steam sales they'll probably translate and dump their entire portfolio onto the marketplace.

Honestly, I'm still amazed that the Touhou guy hasn't done it. It's literally just him, and for a small pittance for translation (I'm sure Carpe Fulgur would do it) he'd probably make close to a million in a few weeks.

Those games are on Playstation and Xbox (for the ten people that own one in the country). Being on PC, the platform Japan is least interested in, probably isn't gonna change anyone's minds. If they aren't interested in the games available on Steam there is no incentive to adopt the platform. Most of those games probably don't even get localized there and I bet the ones that do are as niche as a company like Atlus is here. On Playstation, anyway.

It's not really a matter of whether it can work or not. You can play PC games in Japan, they just... don't.

edit: really, the only way I see PC gaming growing is if Japanese developers start giving a poo poo. They kind of are now in the West, stuff like Dark Souls proved that there is a market for them. I actually can't think of any other game out of Japan that was developed for PC at the same time as console, let alone as the lead platform, than Dark Souls 2. That stuff just doesn't happen. Once they start porting it over for the Western audience they may as well release the PC version at home as well.

If I remember correctly, ZUN doesn't want to sell his stuff in the US because he'd have to deal with US copyright laws and the like. Especially considering how avid the Touhou fanbase is when it comes to creating stuff.

If this is in response to Pentyne's VN comment, then you're mistaken about that. Japan has a really weird PC gaming market, visual novels are actually a fairly popular game type, as there are literally tens of thousands of them released in the last 15 years, the large majority of which are on PC. Granted, there are a few aspects to this. Most of those are pornographic. Most have basically nothing else to them but the porn, some try to write involved storylines but shoehorn porn in because you can't sell romance oriented titles to males in Japan without porn.

So I guess the lesson is that if you want to increase the sales of your PC game in japan, just add in some explicit sex scenes! This is the unfortunate lesson everyone there has learned, which is why nobody who isn't willing to do that releases anything on PC. And this loops back around to being related to Steam, because some companies are looking at the success of some VNs here and trying to bring more of them onto Steam. We're going to start seeing a lot of censored VNs make their way to Steam, with the sex scenes removed. It will be fun seeing how this thread reacts.

That reminds me of how Capcom refuses to do a English localization for PW:AAI2 and that getting ended up fan translated anyway. It certainty won't be CoD levels of success, but for sure whatever small sum invested in localization would be massively repaid several times over with a 3DS /iOS digital release, so I guess they really hate money even when their financials are bombing.

So - Mafia II. Not a fun driving simulator (real wheel drive cars on icy roads in a big city, who thought this was a good idea), chapters seem very short, I'm not sure if there is any open world stuff (I guess stealing cars?), and I feel bad because I was playing a thug before who beat up people for lunch money who just escalated to cop killer. Also gently caress you to the mandatory stealth mission.

There's no animosity. The games that people talk about having bugs do, in fact, have bugs. New Vegas, Alpha Protocol, or whatever else all reviewed really well and people really like them. Honestly I think it's the opposite and people gloss over the bugs because Obsidian.

NV's QA was handled by the same company that did Fallout 3's, yet Obsidian got the blame. Can't say anything for AP as it was completely smooth for me.

Point is people have a tendency to poo poo themselves silly over Obsidian's stuff without putting it into any sort of context or using any sort of perspective.

I do hear quite a bit of complaining about Bethesda bugs so I think you guys are exaggerating.

I love Obsidian but even in a genre with a lot of buggy games theirs do stand out. Except Dungeon Siege 3 every game they've released shipped buggy but if you played them later most were significantly improved by patches so keep that in mind.

I'm sure console gamers see them particularly harshly because they aren't so bad when compared to other crpg devs but they are rather bad by non-budget console standards.

It's not that nobody knows or cares about Bethesda's bugs (as was mentioned, PS3 in particular has always been very bad and nigh unplayable for Fallout/TES). It's that nobody talks about them anymore. People do, however, bring up New Vegas all the time. You bring up a game with bugs and people will bring up that it has bugs.
