There was only one catch and that was Catch-22, which specified that a concern for one's own safety in the face of dangers that were real and immediate was the process of a rational mind. Orr was crazy and could be grounded. All he had to do was ask; and as soon as he did, he would no longer be crazy and would have to fly more missions. Orr would be crazy to fly more missions and sane if he didn't, but if he was sane, he had to fly them. If he flew them, he was crazy and didn't have to; but if he didn't want to, he was sane and had to. Yossarian was moved very deeply by the absolute simplicity of this clause of Catch-22 and let out a respectful whistle. Makes you think.

“They're trying to kill me," Yossarian told him calmly. No one's trying to kill you," Clevinger cried. Then why are they shooting at me?" Yossarian asked. They're shooting at everyone," Clevinger answered. "They're trying to kill everyone." And what difference does that make?”

I don't remember if I understood it or not. I do remember it growing more and more tragic as the book wears on and the mystery of the dead guy in the tent slowly being revealed. I think his name was Snowden. Been a loong time. I do remember Nately's whore hitting him with shoes, though. I remember the one guy who kept buying poo poo for the mess. And there was a guy who would ditch his bombers. Then there was Major Major Major Major. Sorta remember an Indian guy, too.

The dead man was lost before he got to Yosorrian's tent. Snowden died when Yorsorrian got promoted. The mess officer bombed his own home. His name was Milo Minderbender. The Indian guy was a Chief.

Milo was played by Jon Voigt. I think. Orson Welles was Dreedle. I think Bob Newhart was Major4. Alan Arkin. Art Garfunkle. Been a while since I've seen that, too.

Pumpy Muffinz posted:That was a an awful book. I couldn't force myself to finish it yeah it was a slog. it's kind of cool that it ends with yossarian as an extremely old man but still alive, even as the literal apocalypse happens around him. but it's full of such boring, turgid poo poo that it's really not worth it to get to that point and the whole point of the book is that every transcendent thing that happened in catch-22 ends up subverted, rendered mundane in retrospect, and turned to poo poo, which is kind of realistic, but very unpleasant to read about. i don't want to read about yossarian becoming a conformist sell-out. he should have spent the rest of his life escaping to sweden, so to speak
