"Good FOR you".

Seriously, when did the affected switch occur? Is it Americans trying to sound more continental? Have we, as a nation completely lost our identity? The other day I had some guy say to me, "Good on you, mate". He did so without irony and he wasn't from overseas. I could tell right away that he was a pathetic poser. I just stared at him and said, "Are you taking a piss, you wanker?". He just walked away.

GOD BLESS AMERICA!

I've always felt that good for you refers to something external happening to the person you say it to and good on you refers to something the person you are talking to did by themselves. I am not basing this on anything other than my hosed up brain

Example A: Your friend won the lottery: "Good for you"

Example B: Your friend donates the lottery winnings to charity: "Good on you"

But your friend's still a worthless gambling addict in both situations, which deserves no praise

Ya but he won the lottery, so that's pretty awesome, if he shares. With you, not with a charity.

this seems correct actually, good thinking  'good for you' is congratulatory whereas 'good on you' is praise

e: well I guess both overlap a bit as congratulatory praise, the difference is subtle
