I don't think the current influx of kids crossing the border is really worth mobilizing 1000 guardsmen. Now if there'd been a really steep uptick in cartel bullshit that would be something else, but this smacks of just being another part of his pathetic attempt to rebrand himself.

Theres like tens of thousands of unescorted kids crossing the border next to drug smugglers and other human traffickers. Surely you can see why this is bad and something to get a handle on. Political grandstanding aside.

Except the guardsmen aren't actually allowed to do anything, so it's just going to be a much more expensive repeat of that Minuteman nonsense.

What do you mean? I figured they'd be watching the border and intercepting people who came across? They'd have the legal authority to do that unlike the civvies.

They aren't the Border Patrol or USCIS. They can wave at the illegals and give them some water bottles, but that's about it.

Except they wouldn't, they'd need to contact local authorities or Border Patrol to actually detain someone. TXNG could only be working in a non-law enforcement capacity observing the border for signs of illegal entry, for whatever its worth.

But yes I agree its something that needs to be curtailed, we can't continue to allow our border to be a revolving door where people can just enter at will. The solution part to that, however, is tricky. You could continue to ramp up spending on Border Patrol Agents, air/water assets, and detention facilities but there's always going to be people seeking entry into the United States as long as we're a functioning nation that's safer than where they're coming from.

Heartache is powerful, but democracy is *subtle*.

Posse comitatus doesn't extend to the National Guard when it's called up at the request of a state governor. They can operate as an extension of law enforcement, and indeed, the national guard has been involved in drug interdiction in New Mexico and Arizona in the past. This differs from the federal reserve forces, which require an act of congress to be mobilized in a non-training capacity on US soil (see: LA riots, Katrina, and the Insurrection Act).

In this case they aren't actually allowed to do anything. They're going to be sitting on their hands the whole time. The kids aren't even trying to evade the border patrol, they're surrendering to them in hopes of being allowed to stay.

They can only act as an extension of law enforcement 1: at the authority of the governor, which they've been granted 2: they can only enforce that state's laws. The border is federal jurisdiction and as such the National Guard cannot stop and detain any of these individuals unless they're violating a relevant state law (smuggling drugs, carrying weapons, etc).

Second, these guardsmen are being deployed with Texas DPS troopers who can also only enforce state law. A convoy of illegals can cross the border right in front of them, keep on trucking right by them, and the TXNG would have exactly zero authority to stop them provided they weren't violating a state law. I'm sure Border Patrol will be nearby, but yea they're not anywhere near as effective as they sound. Its 100% a political stick in the eye at the administration.

Ted Cruz and Rick Perry are stumping to have this changed, but yeah that's not happening.

That would be why I said its a tricky situation. I said you COULD do those things, but they probably won't fix anything. It would need to be a combination of things that the current government doesn't have the stomach or motivation to work towards.

Someone got you a obnoxiously racist av.
National Guard got deployed because someone lit up Border Patrol with a .50 cal from the Mexico side the other day. The article I saw was sloppily written so it wasn't clear if they were talking potshots with a Barrett or a straight up Ma Deuce. Apparently it was suppressing fire, when BP came out of cover they found a whole mess of people manifested on the US side ready to surrender and be shipped north.
