swsp would probably know more but i am pretty sure almost nothing about the platters is the same. they use a new lighter substrate (ceramic based for awhile but I'm not sure if it still is) with a lower coefficient of thermal expension, a new magnetic recording medium (it used to be iron oxide) with higher magnetic coercivity, and you need a new soft magnetic layer under the recording medium for perpendicular recording to work. im not sure about shingled recording.
yeah pretty much nothing is the same as far as platter design goes over the last 20 years

are ssd bits still just deep wells that they deposit charge on (which is why it fades over time)?

the charge is stored on a floating gate which is a little bit of polysilicon or metal surrounded by a dielectric medium.

charge fades away over time because the electrons will eventually tunnel out oblivious to the fact that they don't have enough energy to do so and thus aren't supposed to but they don't have time for newtonian physics

same. i am recording 10 audio tracks for at least an hour at a time now, so that's sort of a big change. just 16-bit 44.1

i suppose this explains why it took like 45 fuckin minutes to "install" on my buddy's xbone even when it was connected to an institutional network that regularly hits 0.5gbps to remote servers

what's even the point of having a disc in these situations

The vast majority of Titanfall's size is the audio btw

quote:

PC gamers (especially those with SSDs) were puzzled to find out that Titanfall had a gargantuan 48 GB file size, despite the lack of a single player campaign and the fact that it was running on a modified source engine. Some digging around in the files revealed that a huge portion of that size was due to a whopping 35 GB of completely uncompressed audio. Respawn has now explained that the reason the audio was not compressed was so they could dedicate more system resources to running the game, and less to unpacking audio files.

Key to Respawn's ethos is pursuit of low-latency controls, the best possible 'handshake' between the player and the game, something that having compressed audio and having the CPU uncompress it on-the-fly, could possibly interfere with, Respawn lead engineer Richard Baker explained to Eurogamer.

He did, however, admit that most PC gamers probably wouldn't even notice the difference. "On a higher PC it wouldn't be an issue. On a medium or moderate PC, it wouldn't be an issue, it's that on a two-core [machine] with where our min spec is, we couldn't dedicate those resources to audio."

oh, well, that makes sense. decompressing audio isn't just something you can do with a couple of megahertz and half a meg of ram, after all.

you can have that stuff be done in audioAL or whatever on the GPU no problem. the game looks pretty good but that is some serious developer laziness and it's astounding they released it that way

amazingly, even with the ~uncompressed audio~, it still only renders at 1400x800 on the xbone
