Cross posting this poo poo because seriously

I automatically assume all homeless people I see are mentally ill or seriously hosed up. Maybe it's because I immediately wonder how they don't have ANYONE in their family or any friends to help them out??

But like, NO SUPPORT network!? And where the gently caress are my taxes going if this even one homeless gently caress. Put them all in a huge house or something.

Section 8 housing, Medicare, food stamps, unemployment, what happened!? I need an ex-homeless person to explain it all to me. How did you alienate your entire family (close or extended, especially if your close family all died in a house fire that claimed your identification and fingerprints)

No but seriously. How do you gently caress up so much and continuously unless you're mentally ill or (similarly) a pathological liar and/or alcoholic

you probably don't but i don't see that it matters because it's hosed people are homeless even if they're crazy drug addicts who snort heroin and rant at shrubs.

alternately it's possible to just have a terrible run of bad luck and exhaust the good will of family and friends. i know a dude who became schizophrenic in his mid-20s and it was made way worse by spending some time in prison. i ran into him at mcdonalds and these days he's medicated and seems sane but his status as a felon and his illness makes it impossible for him to get a good job and his family has had enough of him so he' sabout to be evicted. just sucks man. feels bad.

It's all addiction or mental illness and it's usually both. They've typically either been given 100 chances and hosed them up by the family/friends or they just took off and the family/friend network doesn't know where they are.

It's hosed up that felons can't vote or apply for jobs, because like, they already loving went to jail!! Every term you spend in jail should reduce the "marking" by one level.

Stole a car and sentenced to 5 years?

Come out with a misdemeanor, or stay an extra year and clean your record? R something else, cause Jesus.

Meh. There are tons of programs for them here in Canada and we pay a ton of money towards it and very few people even give it a shot.

e: Also the same demographic overlaps with people who break into cars etc so meh.

It doesn't really undermine it but makes me feel worse. Should really be rehabilitation systems instead of just overcrowded homeless shelters. Tax money??? What are you doing?? Please be useful and stop repaving the neighborhoods every single year. Stop splitting it it into categories and just use it all.

is it because people don't want to get help or because there's a systemic/social problem stopping them from receiving that help though? it's almost never the former

Well if you're a homeless person in norway, you become a "drug addiction specialist" appointed directly to the government, and then after you fail in rehab for the eleventh time and peter out in a pile of your own poo poo in your luxury apartment, papers write pages upon pages of articles regarding what a not at all fuckup you were.

we should just wipe the memories of all homeless people and drop them off in the middle of a forest. if you can survive taht you are probably clever enough to exist in normal society. if you dont make it out you feed the wolves :black101:

Honestly the same personality traits (impulsivity, neuroticism, etc) that predispose someone to drug addiction (or addiction of any kind) lend themselves also to very poor rehab success rates. This isn't even to mention the number of homeless people with varying types of schizophrenia which is also very strongly genetically linked. I think 90% of these people want to just snap their fingers and not have the problems that they do but the thought of never achieving the high that they hit with w/e drug is completely out of the question to them. Conversely, the intense discomfort of being sober is also out of the question. To put it in perspective it'd be like someone telling you that you'd never have an orgasm again.

For what it's worth I have actually studied this and work in healthcare and live in the most homeless city in my country.

e: Here in Vancouver, before or during the olympics we had free 1-way ferry trips to the island just off the coast and made it legal to 'camp' in public parks there so that the news media wouldn't show everyone our homeless.

Aleuts rock, chummer.

I know a guy who used to be homeless as a kid, him and his brothers were raised by a single mom who couldn't find work. Since he was the youngest child services only took him away and his mom eventually regained custody once she managed to get a job in Juneau Alaska. He actually spends a fair amount of time researching poverty and the bad habits and tendencies that can occur due to living in impoverished conditions. Being poor is a vicious cycle that can be really hard to break.

I may regret seriousposting, but add 'having incredibly selfish lovely parents' to your list.

My son's close female friend was homeless on and off from the age of 14 because of a drug addicted mother who didn't care about anyone but herself (she had ten loving children by the way, son's friend was number 3) and a useless father who always put his latest partner before her and her older brother, even if that partner demanded he throw out his underage children. She has lived in a tent on wasteland with a heroin addict who overdosed, with family 'friends' who got tired of having her around and has sofa surfed all over.

I'm not going to go into how we've tried to help since we met her. Will just say that she is now in long term therapy for her borderline personality disorder- something that develops because of attachment issues, no surprise there- and will never have nowhere to go again. But she is very restless and finds it hard to settle nowadays. She has lived with us twice, with a grandparent, in a flatshare and with her boyfriend's parents twice just in the three years we've known her. She's just 21. I think that feeling of rootlessness and discomfort when staying somewhere long term might also have a role in long term homelessness.

Woman moves to new city to find work. She has a boyfriend, she gets pregnant, boyfriend runs off. Work dries up, and she and her kid(s) get evicted. She might find a shelter, but once her kids are grown, they're on their own with zero support.

Factory worker gets laid off. He doesn't have any particular skills and struggles to find work. He is diagnosed with cancer and undergoes expensive treatment, wiping out his savings. Unemployment runs out. Bank forecloses on his house, and he has to live in his car. No one wanted to hire him anyway, and they especially won't hire someone who hasn't showered in days.

Goon lives with religious zealot parents. He is 26, with a community college degree in English and no work experience. Goon's parents are happy to support him as long as he obeys the rules of their community and attends the weekly prayer marches. One day, parents catch goon masturbating to hentai and excommunicate him from the family. Goon has no possessions or friends and ends up stinking up the computers at the library all day and sleeping under a bridge..

Within six months, all homeless people are drug addicted or mentally ill, whether they started that way or not.

I've lived in the slummiest areas in town and have volunteered for various hotel societies and in this city there is adequate housing. The housing is provided for you and your welfare is garnisheed for it. Anyone sleeping on the streets here simply cannot abide by the very lose framework required of them to live in these places. Unfortunately this is usually do to mental illness / hatred for established rules.

As a bonus here is me hanging out with some neighbors in a short film. I am credited as patrick

Edit: to be clear I was never actually homeless, but I paid rent to live in some pretty scummy places which were occupied almost entirely by welfare recipients

I dunno, it seems pretty easy for me to imagine scenarios where someone might become homeless where at least its mostly not their fault. It is, of course, much easier to imagine scenarios where it almost entirely their fault (inherent or by action)
