This year we have will have a revolution as known old racist man Carlo Tavecchio is set to become the new head of the FIGC, after long serving president Giancarlo Abete resigned due to Italy’s horrendous World Cup campaign. Gone are the days of a player being owned by ten teams and gone are the days of being able to loan young players to Serie C2 sides. A new horizon beckons us to come forward and scream impotently at a bunch of poo poo cloggers playing in front of 30 or so drunk ultras waving a flag with a “VESUVIUS TAKE THEM” during a match between Sassuolo and Chievo. Don’t worry about any of that though, the football is good, the off the field drama is better and northern most city in Africa is back in the top flight! Cagliari Calcio Home City Cagliari, Sardegna Manager: Zdenek Zeman Notable players in: Nobody, unless you count our friend Massimo Cellino, who now owns Leeds instead. Manuel Almunia apparently??? Notable players out: Davide Astori (defender, Lazio) Radja Nainggolan (midfielder, Roma, last winter) Trophies: Serie A [1] 69/70 Last finish: 15th Zeman is currently in the process of ridding this team of all competent defenders and midfielders but forgetting the other crucial part of the equation which is buying a lot of good attackers. A lot of drama unfolded around Cagliari last year as the stadium situation which saw them play home games all over the country finally ended with home games being played in a restricted seating Sant Elia in Cagliari, which was probably the plan all along. Noted psycho Massimo Cellino sold the side and hosed off out of Italy to purchase Leeds United in England, which should prove to be pretty good once the season starts in earnest and the English press start getting to him. Im going to guess that Cagliari go down this year.  Associazone Calcio Cesena Home City Cesenaa Manager: Pierpaolo Bisoli Notable players in: Nicola Leali (keeper, Spezia via Juve) Notable players out: A bunch of Serie B garbagemen Trophies: None at the top level Last finish: Serie B playoff winner Cesena were the first winners of the 6 team playoff format in Serie B, defeating Latina twice 2-1 in their two legged final. The Seahorses were recently in Serie A if you all remember, but look to be going straight back down if they don’t make some serious signings. Leali is a promising keeper but he’s going to have to be incredible to stop what’s coming at him all season.  Associazione Calcio Chievo Verona Home City Verona Manager: Eugenio Corrini Notable players in: Maxi Lopez (striker, Sampdoria via Catania) Valter Birsa (winger, Milan) Notable players out: Luca Rigoni (midfielder, Palermo) Cyril Thereau (forward, Udinese) Trophies: none at the top level Last finish: 16th These pieces of poo poo just wont loving die despite selling their good players every season. Thereau did enough to get himself a move to Udinese, as did Luca Rigoni, so there goes what was essentially the spine of their midfield->attack. The venerable Sergio Pelissier continues to play for the Flying Donkeys and will probably get a decent amount of games if he can stay fit. Could be an interesting trio of attackers with him, Lopez and BIrsa, but I expect them to lose a lot of balls in midfield. They’ll probably scrape their way to safety AGAIN.  Empoli Football Club Home City Empoli Manager: Maurizio Sarri Notable players in: None Notable players out: None Trophies: None at the top flight Last finish: Serie B, 2nd place (promoted) Empoli have finally managed to turn their consistent Serie B playoff appearances in to a promotion by avoiding the playoffs all together. Empoli were last in Serie A the 07/08 season and before that they even managed to sneak a European spot to play in the Europa League. It will be a serious uphill climb to stay in the league this time around as money has gotten tighter and Empoli is one of those teams that lives off of co-ownership and loan deals. They haven’t signed anyone of note, but they haven’t really lost any of the team they had in B yet either, so I guess they’ll be hoping they can secure some last minute players on deadline day as all of the big clubs try to offload the players they couldn’t sell at the last minute. I hope they do well because they have a good system but I can’t see them doing anything but fighting relegation all season.  ACF Fiorentina Home City Firenze Manager: Vincenzo Montella Notable players in: Giuseppe Rossi and Mario Gomez are like new signings! Notable players out: Alessandro Matri (“attacker” Genoa via Milan) Trophies: Serie A [2] 55/56, 68/69 Coppa Italia [6] 39/40, 60/61, 65/66, 74/75, 95/96, 00/01 Cup Winners Cup [1] 60/61 Last finish: 4th Another fourth place finish that should’ve been higher, but a horrific injury crisis that saw two of the teams best players out for the majority of the season kept them below the CL spots. Cuadrado was just enough to make up the difference as Fiorentina finished in a decent position on the table, but that performance along with the world cup hype might see him move on to a bigger team. Montella remains one of the better coaches in the league and he has the actual backing of the Della Valle family who own the side, meaning he’s also one of the few coaches in the league to be lucky enough to have a decent relationship with the board. If, and this is a big if, Fiorentina can keep Cuadrado and keep everyone healthy, I expect them to be challenging for the CL spots again.  Genoa Cricket and Football Club Home City Genova Manager: Gian Piero Gasperini Notable players in: Alessandro Matri (“attacker”, Fiorentina via Milan) Notable players out: Alberto Gilardion (striker, Guangzhou Evergrande) Trophies: Serie A [9] 1897/98; 1898/99; 1899/1900; 1901/02; 1902/03; 1903/04; 1914/15; 1922/34 1923/24 Coppa Italia [1] 36/37 Last finish: 13th Gilardino was decent enough last year to help Genoa to a relatively comfortable mid table finish despite a pretty scary early season where we saw poor Fabio Liverani get booted after a string of terrible performances. Gasperini seems to have leveled them out a bit but they haven’t made any good signings yet. The derby with Sampdoria is always entertaining, one of the better ones in the league, so we’ll have that anyway. Mazzarri’s last season wasn’t his best work and he drew a lot of heat from fans. I suspect only the new ownership of Thohir and being better than an absolutely disgusting Milan side was all that kept him from getting the sack. 5th place is a little flattering to be honest, and Mazzarri is probably walking on thin ice. Mauro Icardi provides a lot of off the field idiocy and some good on the field play so he’ll be one to watch this season as he takes over the scoring duties. Inter should be challenging for the CL spots, even the title, but I don’t think Mazzarri has the attitude to take the risks needed. Juve dominated everyone except Fiorentina last year but also managed to embarrass themselves in Europe going out in the Champions League group stage in a group containing Galatasaray and FC Kobenhaven. This year promises to be a bit different as title bringing manager Antonio Conte has left the side and the board smoked a lot of meth and hired Max Allegri as his replacement. I expect to see Giorgio Chiellni as a trequartista and maybe if we’re lucky Tevez will play left back. Juve will probably win the title again despite all this but with a transfer month left and big Max in charge it could be someone elses time to really take it.  Societa Sportiva Lazio Home City Roma Manager: Stefano Pioli Notable players in: Marco Parolo (midfielder, Parma) Stefan De Vrij (defender, Feyenoord) Notable players out: none Trophies: Serie A [2] 73/74, 99/00 Coppa Italia [5] 1958, 97/98, 99/00, 03/04, 08/09, 12/13 Cup Winners Cup [1] 99/98 Last finish: 9th Lazio had a decent enough season last year but were ultimately disappointing given the talent they had on hand. Miro Klose will continue to lead the forward line, and they’ve been bolstered by the signing of Stefan De Vrij. The side also features the oldest youth player in the world, Joseph Minala, who is 54 years old but is actually only 19. Lazio also continue to be the only side without a shirt sponsor because Lotito hates money. I expect Lazio to be better with a competent defender in the backline now but Im not sure how Pioli will line up and deal with a “big” team. Max Allegri was fired way too late after pissing his way to 4-1 defeats to Sassuolo and draws against Livorno. Clarence Seedorf was brought in as a replacement despite never managing a side in his life and did as well as could be expected given the garbage he had to work with. He was summarily axed for no good reason and was replaced by another club legend in Pippo Inzaghi. The preseason has gone poo poo so far and the defense consisting of legendary turds Daniele Bonera and Philipe Mexes just wont go away so I expect another miserable campaign beginning with a desperation signing of a mediocre player on August 31st. If Inzaghi makes it to Christmas with this poo poo team I’ll be impressed.  Societa Sportiva Calcio Napoli Home City Napoli Manager: Rafa Benitez Notable players in: Michu (attacker, Swansea) Kalidou Koulibaly (defender, Genk) Notable players out: Pepe Reina (keeper, Liverpool) Trophies: Serie A [2] 86/86, 89/90 Coppa Italia [4] 61/62, 75/76, 86/87, 11/12, 13/14 UEFA Cup/Europa Leage [1] 88/89 Last finish: 3rd, Coppa Italia Winner Aurelio De Laurentiis must be making GBS threads himself seeing top clown Max Allegri take over Juve. If Napoli are ever going to win another title, it has to be now. They couldn’t manage a season finish that they needed to secure auto qualification to the CL group stages, but they did hold on to the last spot, so some lovely trips to the San Paolo for unsuspecting foreigners are incoming. The only big loss so far has been Reina, who was good, though not spectacular last year, but there are brewings that there could be more. ADL has never been shy about opening his wallet when needed though, so if players go out, others will come in to replace them. Napoli should be challenging for the title and the CL spots, but I’ve seen better teams come out midtable so who knows.  Parma Football Club Home City Parma Manager: Notable players in: none Notable players out: Marco Parolo (midfielder, Lazio) Trophies: Coppa Italia [3] 91/92, 98/99, 01/02 Cup Winners Cup [1] 92/93 UEFA Cup/Europa Leage [2] 94/95, 98/99 Last finish: 6th Donadoni remains one of the longer lasting manager in Serie A after leading Parma to a Europa League spot last season. Unfortunately for them, they were unable to get a UEFA license to compete so the former Europa League two time champs will have to settle for…well…nothing. Antonio Cassano played well enough last year to earn a World Cup spot and promptly poo poo the bed along with the rest of the team, so he’s probably ready to redeem himself a bit. Other than that, Parma have lost their other Italian World Cup player in Marco Parolo, who moved just a tiny bit up to Lazio. Donadoni seems to have finally set in to a good managerial groove again and will probably be fighting for Europa League spots again.  Unione Sportivo Citta Di Palermo Home City Palermo, Sicilia Manager: Giuseppe Iacchini Notable players in: Luca Rigoni (midfielder, Chievo) Notable players out: KYLE LAFFERTY IL DYLAN DOG DI PALERMO (striker, Norwich City) Trophies: None at the top level Last finish: Serie B Champions After a hilarious start to the season in which Gennaro Gattuso managed the team to the bottom of the table, Maurizio Zamparini waved his dick around and appointed Beppe Iacchini to guide them to the top of Serie B in just a few months and managed to hold the spot for the rest of the tournament. The surprise of the league was one Kyle Lafferty, one of the few brits to play in Italy’s leagues in a long while. He scored 12 goals including some very nice free kicks and was loved by fans so much that legendary Italian comic Series “Dylan Dog” wrote him in to an issue. His goal scoring was outshone by a much nastier habit as Zamparini sold him right after promotion, stating that he was “an out of control womanizer, an Irishman without rules” and that he “disappeared for weeks going on the hunt for women in Milan”. He also apparently has “six children with two families”. Whether any of this is true is up for debate but Im sorely disappointed that we wont see him in Serie A and instead have to deal with bullshit Ashley Cole for our Brit-Fix. Unlike the other promoted teams Palermo actually has a decent squad and I could see them being above the relegation zone easily, though it’d be a miracle if they got above 13th or so. Unfortunatley since Catania went down there will be no Siclian derbies year, but since everybody that isn’t from Sicily hates Sicily then there will be plenty of charge dmatches at the Renzo Barbera and elsewhere.  Associazione Sportiva Roma Home City Roma Manager: Rudi Garcia Notable players in: Ashely Cole (defender, Chelsea) Manuel Itrube (midfielder, Hellas) Seydou Keita (midfielder, Valencia) Salih Ucan (midfielder, Fenerbahce) Notable players out: Dodo (defender, Inter) Rodrigo Taddei (attacker, end contract) Trophies: Serie A [3] 41/42, 82/83, 00/01 Coppa Italia [9] 63/64, 68/69, 79/80, 80/81, 83/84, 85/86, 90/91, 06/07, 07/08 Last finish: 2nd A record start to the season saw Roma go 10 games undefeated before finally succumbing after Francesco Totti got injured and Gervinho just couldn’t carry the weight in that little headband of his. Regardless of the insane season Roma had (a good insane) they got too many draws and were doomed to 2nd place behind Juventus. This season, along with Napoli, will be a defining season for Roma as Juve don’t look as monstrous as they usually do and Roma hasn’t lost any key players yet. Garcia has the backing of the whole side and the board, as well as the fans and has repaid them with some wonderful results. This may or may not be Totti’s last season, but if they win the title I bet he retires. The only negative thing to say about Roma is that their deal for a new stadium seems to have hit a snag when it was revealed that there were several child and bullshit companies that would own the stadium when it first opens rather than the team itself, so the city rightly threw the proposal out. Regardless, I imagine enough palms will be filled with cash so that it works itself out, but that’s disappointing. Whatever, this is a really good team and I expect them to challenge for the title this year.  Unione Calcio Sampdoria Home City Genova Manager: Sinisa Mihajlovic Notable players in: Mario Yepes (defender, Atalanta) Duncan (midfielder, Livorno via Inter) Gonzalo Bergessio (attacker, Catania) Notable players out: Maxi Lopez (striker, Chievo) Trophies: Serie A [1] 90/91 Coppa Italia [4] 84/85, 87/88, 88/89, 93/94 Cup Winners Cup [1] 89/90 Last finish: 12th Not too much to say about Samp this year, they were a mid table team last season and are a mid table team now. Mihajlovic provided a nice boost when he took over midseason, but the shine has worn off and they were playing pretty poorly by the end. I don’t expect much of a difference this season unless Mihajlovic has been showing them all how to take free kicks.  Unione Sportivo Sassuolo Calcio Home City Sassuolo, though home games will be played in Reggio Emilia while the stadium is finished (still!) Manager: Eusebio Di Francesco Notable players in: Federico Peluso (defender, Juventus) Sime Vrsaljko (defender, Genoa) Notable players out: none Trophies: None at the top level Last finish: 17th Eusebio Di Francesco was hired twice last season after some ill fated spells with other managers and managed to just barely hang on to Serie A status. This was largely due to Domenico Berardi’s excellent season and the team have managed to hang on to him, hoping he will score more status-maintaining goals this year. The Mapei Stadium, Sassuolo’s actual ground, is still being rebuilt in order to host more people during events so Sassuolo will continue to play in Reggio Emilia while this is happening. There are rumors that It’ll be done during this season, but I doubt it. This team will still be fighting for survival this year, I don’t think they’ve done enough to get any higher.  Torino Football Club Home City Torino Manager: Giampiero Ventura Notable players in: Fabio Quagliarella (striker, Juventus) Antonio Nocerino (midfielder, West Ham via Milan) Notable players out: Ciro Immobile (attacker, Dortmund) Trophies: Serie A [7] 27/28, 42/43, 45/46, 46/47, 47/48, 48/49, 75/76 Coppa Italia [5] 35/36, 42/43, 67/68, 70/71, 92/93 Last finish: 7th Torino just barely missed out on European football last season when Alessio Cerci whiffed a penalt….what’s that? Parma couldn’t get a license? TORINO IN EUROPE STARTING TODAY. This season’s team will not be the team that placed so high last year as they have lost the league’s top scorer in Ciro Immobile, and will have a very tough time keeping Alessio Cerci. Picking up Quagliarella from Juve was a very smart move as I think he’s still an excellent player and will be looking to pick up after his career basically stagnated at Juve, despite winning a bunch of trophies. Ventura did very well to adapt his tactics to his players, but without Immobile doing a lot of the work I expect it to be an uphill battle to place as well as they did last year.  Udinese Calcio Home City Udine Manager: Andrea Stramaccioni Notable players in: Cyril Thereau (attacker, Chievo) a bunch of nobodies to sell for 20 million in two years. Notable players out: Roberto Pereyra (midfielder, Juventus) Trophies: None at the top level Last finish: 14th Fears that Di Natale was going to hang up his boots were cast away when he decided to give it one more go after what was finally an “expected” season for Udinese. Long time manager Francesco Guidolin has been promoted to the greater staff of the Pozzo footballing empire and was replaced by Andrea Stramaccioni….bene BENE! They actually made a signing of someone who I have heard of so already Udinese are breaking new ground. I expect this to be another mid table finish or a disastrous mess when Strama is found out again. In America Well, the internet is more than likely your best bet. beIn sport “carries” Serie A but it’s usually limited to the late game on Sunday or Saturday, provided Barcelona or Real Madrid aren’t playing. They also show stuff on tape delay. RAI International (now called RAI Italia) carries a game in each time slot (lunch time, 1500 and 2045) on each game day, but the quality of the broadcast is really bad and also it’s in Italian! BeIn has launched a streaming service here though it's only available if you have Time Warner or some other networks that have signed a deal with them. Check your local listings I guess! In the UK BT Sport apparently has the license to broadcast a lot of the games in the UK, so if you have that channel, that's where you should go! Anywhere else I have no idea! Forza Italian Football A site with some news coverage and a lot of decent editorial pieces. English language, best for opinions. transfermarkt.it: A gigantic real life transfer database, the .it version is in Italian and covers Serie A on the first page, but if you go to the bottom there's a .co.uk version that's in English. They post a lot of good pictures and announce important things pretty quickly. Tancredi Palmeri is a multilingual journalist who is mostly worth following during the transfer season for entertainment only; he’s mostly full of poo poo but every now and then he tells a good story about a player or a manager and such. Gianluca Di Marzio is another good journalist who’s more serious than Palmeri and also has an English section on his website. He’s usually pretty reliable. A good twitter-man to follow is James Horncastle. He's a nice man who will usually answer questions about Italian football. He also has long flowing hair, which makes him better than the other James (ac jimbo) that cares about Serie A.

It should be noted that while several clubs withdrew their support of Tavecchio following his "controversial" remarks, they didn't openly announce their support to Albertini. What I hope? Albertini wins, bringing a young president and a man of sport to the presidency. What I fear will happen? Tavecchio wins, and FIGC gets an old racist shithead as president. Though he was right about one thing, there are too few italian players in the Serie A, or at least in some teams.
