WHO is the goodest girl?
I saw Lush in college in Texas and, while I owned Spooky at the time, I was nowhere near smart enough to appreciate them the way I should.

Split is probably in my top 5 albums of all time now. Man, I wish things had gone differently for them.

I'm excited that Slowdive's coming to Seattle this year, though.

I stumbled onto them via seeing a Facebook friend listening to them on Spotify earlier this year, Leave has maybe the most memorable melody I've heard this year, it's gotten stuck in my head so much. Seriously every irritating stupid facebook app is worth it for that feature, I love seeing what people are listening to

That sounds like more generalized shoegaze than their earlier stuff, which had more of a power-pop bent to it.

We are solidly in the 3rd quarter of the year and it feels like nothing much to get really excited about happened this year. But here are some stuff that has come out so far that me and other dudes I have been talking to think are good.

Aerofall
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EomTV_XPkZ8
Shoegazers from Russia. They released a self titled and it blows their 2011 entry, Seasons, away. This album may very well end up being the album of the year as far as the things covered in this thread go.

Hot Glass
http://littleleaguerecords.bandcamp.com/album/only-animals-your-chance
Irish group. Only a two song release but I am pretty hyped for what they do from here. Only Animals is a really good song.

nothing
http://wearenothing.bandcamp.com/album/guilty-of-everything
To be honest, I am not really feeling them. But some people seem to be really on it. Sounds really boring and uninspired to me.

magic love
http://magiclove.bandcamp.com/album/dawn-ep
Japanese unit. Soundtrack to laying on a grassy hill looking at clouds for me this summer.

Daisy Face
http://daisyface.bandcamp.com/album/slow-approaching-nothing
Another group that some people are on that I am not up on. Has that slow midwest emo sound to it.

September Girls
http://septembergirls.bandcamp.com/
Another Irish group. The opening guitar riff on Cursing the Sea I have heard a million times before in other songs.

Strata Florida
http://saintmarierecords.bandcamp.com/album/made-of-stars
The more unique one of the group. Louise Trehy's (one half of Swallow) new thing. I would definitely say this is something you should get in on.

Noir For Rachel
http://noirforrachelband.bandcamp.com/album/fog-museum
Another band that I picked up thanks to cruising polish and russian tumblrs. Has a pretty pronounced post-punk sound to it.

there's also Ceremony which I have mentioned earlier in the thread. What are some recent things you guys have been listening to?

I really love Jorge Elbrecht's work. The albums he put out with Violens are great, especially "True". Somehow I missed it when it first came out, but I fell in love with the track he did with Ariel Pink last winter "Called to Ring".

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UmFeWSuDja8

The false ending/fuzzed-out guitar at the 3-minute mark is really cool.

I'm really hoping they continue to work together. Ariel's voice really seems to work well in this setting, though I definitely like his solo stuff and with Haunted Graffitti.

I really like the Creepers EP - they're a Deafheaven side project from the drummer and guitarist. Their sound reminds me a LOT of Women, which is great because the only thing we have from ex-Women members so far is Viet Cong's Cassette EP, and Viet Cong is sort of getting away from that sound.

try the first two Lantlos albums, Neige is on there doing his signature vocals

definately check out Deafheaven who are the best band in the world etc and whole metal community hates them and so forth (they rule)

Amesoeurs (Neiges old band) has a couple good songs on their album, but the direction is really all over the place

and perhaps a long shot but if you're into the more-black-metal-than-shoegaze, maybe just maybe you will like Wolves in the Throne room (but not the latest album, that's ambient)

Hail Boognish
caught Slowdive last night and it's probably the best show I've ever been to. The way they mix the vocals and instruments is incredible, it really sounds like they're playing their recorded stuff in front of you.

Setlist:

Slowdive
Avalyn
Catch the Breeze
Crazy for You
Souvlaki Space Station
Machine Gun
Blue Skied an' Clear
Albatross
(live debut)
When the Sun Hits
Morningrise
She Calls
Alison
Golden Hair

Encore:
Dagger
40 Days

Only complaint is they should have ended their set with 40 Days and done Golden Hair for the very end. The four-minute extended outro is something loving else.

Along with the other blackgaze suggestions you may want to try Heretoir, Liam and maybe An Autumn for Crippled Children.

More traditionally shoegaze but still extremely dark is the band The Cheshire Strangler, check them out.

Not really shoegazey but a metal band that plays with atmosphere and romantic themes and has the good cop, bad cop vocals is Novembre. Check out the albums Dreams D'azur and Novembrine Waltz.

You may also want to check out Klimt 1918, who started off with a sound that could kinda be described as a metal band who are really into U2 and the Police and have gotten progressively more indie and shoegazey as they've gone on. The guitars are pretty reminiscent of British Sea Power.

Just got back from Slowdive's show in Toronto and all I can do is echo the guy up above. They had an amazing mix (on top of that, the Danforth usually sounds great).
Having not seen them before, I thought the song selection was really good. Souvlaki Space Station was groovy. A+++ can't wait to see them again in another 20 years.

I hadn't heard/seen the opener (Low) before, and they were really cool as well. Very inspiring to see a different type of band setup (minimalist drums, vocal harmonies, bursts of really dense impressionistic lead guitar). They were very reminiscent of old film music the way some Portishead stuff can be.
