If anyone remembers back when I released the patch for Aya Shameimaru: Touhou Attorney, I sold a bunch of physical copies overseas in order to support the circle who made it to some degree. I'm doing the same for the sequel, which is just about ready for release. I still have two copies of that unspoken for, so if you're interested, let me know via PM or something. It's $20 USD shipped air mail.

either way balls to that but when I found melonbooks I found actual touhou games alongside fangames for sale, so I picked up IN, SA and Impossible Spellcard for only 3000¥. I got my holiday merch! :getin:

Just imagine, ZUN, if you'd had the decency to place a bland, stagnant harem male in the cast for all the girls to revolve around, you could have been rolling in cash by now!

It was inevitable that Touhou would eventually crest, then recede; like all fads, it couldn't sustain itself forever. The fact that it's being replaced by Touhou-but-with-loli-strippers-and-jingoism is really disappointing, though...

Kuroko no Basket is doing really well, I am surprised to see Attack on Titan red instead of purple, but I don't really follow that property or its fandom.

Something that I've been curious for a while, has ZUN given a reason for the all female cast on Touhou? Nowadays he's kind of forced to keep it that way by the fandom and because has become sort of a series' signature but at first?

There is this thing from 2003 on the wiki (http://en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/ZUN%27s_reply_to_messages_on_the_former_Gensou_Bulletin_Board_3), which is the closest thing I've seen to an explanation of it:

quote:

Q. "Gensokyo" Is there an important intention that until now, there has not been any who showed up other than stubborn girls?

A. There is definitely.
If they fought with all their effort, then it would not be possible for the girls to have 1 vs. 1 battles. (More the story gets serious, less the chances to be happening.)
So, that is assuredly the girls' game. In the case it is seen as play, for males and females both young and old showed up jumbled together would be unnatural. So, that is the reason why, in the game, it is not easy for any other than girls to show up. Until now, and also from now.

Which, as far as I can tell, just means that because the games are fundamentally about Reimu having showboating contests with people and monsters, said people and monsters are designed to be her peers. I don't really see why there shouldn't be any male characters, but at this point it would probably be seen as too big of a deal if he added them in.

There are loads of blokes just hanging in the background of in the books/comics/Hopeless Masquerade though. One of them even had a name and a speaking role!

Namtab

Basically what he's said there is that danmaku is more of a game than anything else, because if characters got properly serious it would basically become a war.

Because danmaku's a game, ZUN says it would be unnatural for men to join in with the women, probably because of :biotruths:

It's a very bad machine translation, but that's apparantly why there's no guys in the games.

Makes me wonder how different things would be with prominent male characters on Touhou though.

ZUN: I feel as if boys get in the way of the game. I'd like to make boy characters in another game as long as the game was completely unrelated to Touhou. Boys would just ruin the balance of the series.

What exactly do the colors indicate on that graph? Would blue be an increase in sales, red a decrease, purple holding steady? What would the gray bar represent, then? And what do the names that aren't Touhou, Tiger & Bunny, Free!, or Vocaloid translate to?

SyntheticPolygon

I thought there were no males in Touhou because Zun finds guys harder to draw than girls, and he drew girls bad enough already. And then when his skill improved artstyle changed he thought it'd be weird to put them in since there had already been like 10 games out with an all female cast and he didn't want to break tradition.

Blue is male oriented, Red female. Vocaloid is both. The entire list is:

Kancolle
Touhou
Kuroko no Basket
Attack on Titan
Idolm@ster
Tiger & Bunny
Love Live!
Free
Hetalia
Vocaloid
Haikyuu
Yowamushi Pedal

Gray bars are numbers from last year's Comiket 85.

Wouldn't that require SnK to be more popular among women than men?

It may be coincidence, but all the blue bars began as video game series and all the red bars began as manga/anime.

I asked that question earlier, but I've been told apparently there's a good amount of fujoshi doujin for SnK.

And Love Live goes against your theory because I'm pretty sure it started as a manga/anime, but it's blue.
