There are a lot of things that impress me about this show, but two in particular stand out to me.
The first is continuity. Almost every other cartoon show seems to be scared shitless of building a continuing narrative, for fear that viewers watching an episode. Adventure Time sort of does it, but even then it's more a theming continuity than a narrative one. But in GF everything, even the episodes that don't advance the main mistery plot, has an impact on the storyline and isn't conveniently forgotten in the next episode; which is something that always bugs me to no end.
The other one, as people have already pointed out, is how dark the show can get. We've had a secondary but beloved character turned into a zombie! Whenever I see Mickey Mouse at the end of the credits, I'm always slightly weirded out by the thought that Disney, the company that built an empire on the foundations of being kids friendly, is producing something like this.

I assume it's just a mini-magnifying glass, nothing too special. Just flair. Also, with the invisible-ink reveal, I doubt there'd be another one.

But, on the other hand, it's Gravity Falls. So...

When Dipper was wondering aloud about if there were any way to read the rest of the journal, and the monocle was just swinging away there, I thought the writers were being facetious. When it turned out to be the blacklights my face was pretty much :catstare:

I vaguely recall him looking through the monocle when he got the journal. But now that he's found out about the invisible ink, I wouldn't be surprised if a combination of a blacklight and the monocle would reveal something extra.

Yeah that was ok, as was zombie soos and soos' "have fun sleeping tonight!" In the second episode, but that was kinda it

I just don't really give a gently caress about the larger mystery of gravity falls especially when it comes at the cost of character interaction, which is exactly what these episodes did

These episodes were almost painfully unfunny, so focused on the whole mystery aspect which isn't anywhere near as interesting as most people think it is

The mysteries work best as external metaphors for internal struggle for Mabel/dipper, and as pure episodic set pieces

This whole focus on serialization isn't doing the characters or the show any favors because it's a kid's show and quite frankly the writing by definition can't be as sophisticated as it aspires to be, especially when it comes at sacrificing the humor for it

Wow, I'm both relieved and disappointed that I'm not the only person who didn't really like the season premiere.

Even though Alex Hirsch is still running the show the premiere episode felt like somebody else trying to make an episode of Gravity Falls by going through a checklist of all the things that people like about it (wacky townspeople! spooky monsters! weird celebrity guests! Mabels is so cray-cray and 80s!) and emulating it poorly.

I was sold on Gravity Falls when Season 1 premiered with a bait-and-switch involving a "zombie" actually being garden gnomes, because zombies are the most boring and played-out monster in pop-culture and the fact that they didn't take the easy route and did something funny and original was incredibly endearing. Season 2 debuted with a zombie attack. :effort:

I loved how in season 1 they introduced all sorts of wacky townspeople and how they organically added to the humor on a level almost on par with classic Simpsons. In season 2 they were practically going off a checklist, naming background characters and giving them time to deliver a catchphrase before moving on to the next person to show off.

The season 1 guest stars were great because they made you do a double-take at how they came out of nowhere: Larry King and Coolio as themselves? Alfred Molina as the Multibear? John Oliver as Sherlock Holmes? :monocle: Season 2 had Nick Offerman playing a gruff government agent, just like he did in Parks & Recreation, 21 Jump Street, Casa De Mi Padre, Childrens Hospital, Axe Cop, and 22 Jump Street.

A lot of the jokes were rehashes of ones from last season (the fake 80s song titles, Mabel eating sugar, etc.). Even the soundtrack seems like it was all recycled musical cues from last season.

The show has always been fairly uneven so I'm not jumping ship or anything, but it was really disappointing and I hope they don't pull an Adventure Time and abandon the fun and humor of the show in favor of serialized storytelling and "edgy" poo poo like violence (axe to the gut) and innuendo ("Almost as scary as Dipper's internet search history!") that appeals to the Tumblr crowd.

It was the season premiere of a show that hadn't been on for literally a year. I'm fine with them taking a little time to remind us about everyone. It wasn't the best but it didn't take up that much of the episode overall.

There's pictures in the opening credits of stuff that doesn't happen til nearly the end of the season. They've clearly got stuff planned in advanced, and hopefully that means they also have the endgame all or mostly figured out and are building up to it. I love Lost, but it was clear they didn't have an ending really planned til way later. Gravity Falls it feels like they actually do have the big things all planned and are building up to it. The show so far has been enough to prove that to me anyway :shobon:

I dunno... I liked both of the things they showed there. The animation in the theme song for the first one looked particularly good.

What I thought was funny was that the kids who got to ask questions asked way more interesting questions than any of the older people did. Like the thing about the skeletons in the mirror and Robbie? I don't even REMEMBER that scene. I did like that Alex Hirsch didn't outright pull out McGucket when asked about the other clone dippers. He basically said "yes they are still out there" and didn't really go into more detail. So it looks like they haven't melted in the rain yet. Also the boy band is still out there.

Also Alex Hirsch mentioned that they are working on a real video game, but couldn't give any details about it at all. I hope he's working closely on it so it turns out good!
