Friend of mine introduced me to Strand of Oaks. His latest album is pretty darn good rock. Shut In https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j2Kmch5w0WA.

He also has a song about Jason Molina. It gets pretty heavy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=exSbJDbzsak

I really, really, really like the new Spoon album. They've very quietly grown to be probably my favorite band of the past decade or so. I typically only like bands for stretches of two or three albums at a time before I lose interest, but they just don't miss for me.

It is awesome with the whole eighties rock feeling it has going on.

Eh it's in my top 5 but I think it would have benefitted from cutting some chaff Suffering and Dissappearing are low points for me. An Ocean In Between the Waves and Red Eyes are some of my faves this year though.

I'm really enjoying the Tony Molina Dissed and Dismissed album, it's 12 tracks and the album as a whole comes in at just 12 minutes but all of it is awesome. The whole thing is on YouTube.

This is probably going to be my album of the year by far. And this is coming from a guy that usually wants to immediately turn off any album that chases the 80s aesthetic. The War On Drugs is one of the few bands that has gotten significantly better with each release and I'm really excited to see what they do in the future.

It's so good. I mean Spoon albums are pretty much universially good (and good in more or less the same way), but this is on the high side of that. Way better than Transference and I liked Transference.

I kinda want to throw out a recommendation for something I've been enjoying the poo poo out of lately, Maragold's self titled album. It probably sits in wierd place, the only really notable member of the band is Greg Howe, meaning most people will get to the band through an appreciation for guitar wanking. Greg tones it down, though, there's really only one flashy solo on the album.

Also, the lead singer is really, REALLY good. Lots of range, lots of power. They doubletracked her for a couple of tracks, and it feels like overkill, she almost doesn't need it.

A couple of tracks off the album, though my personal favourite isn't posted to youtube, so you kinda have to buy the album for it. "Story's Ending" is a goddamn gorgeous song.

I'm going to say some incendiary statements right now: The new songs don't play very well live. I'm sure they'll sound great on the record, and in 5 years when they get really tight with them. They just sounded so bad. I want to blame the sound guy, but they keep bringing terrible sound guys with them.

I can't get enough of this song. The vocalist/guitarist/drummer of the group, who may or may not be a goon (I'm honestly not sure if he is or not but I think he may be) was kind enough to let me listen to the rest of the album, which has not yet been released. In the last week I've probably listened to the whole thing 10-15 times...I seriously can't stop, it's so good.

The song above is easily one of the best tracks from this amazing album. I'll definitely be updating this thread when the rest of the album becomes available.

Well gently caress Yeah Fest in Los Angeles just ended tonight and it was a pretty successful festival in my opinion. I think that was the first time I ever rode the rail in L.A. Anyway, I picked out some pictures that weren't boring back of the crowd shots.

First off, let me say that the hype surrounding Future Islands live performance is no joke. I didn't get to snap a better picture, but the lead singer goes loving nuts. He likes to alternate between death metal growls and really weird, almost sensual hand gestures and poses. It was cool in a slightly unsettling way.

That shirt was literally drenched in sweat by the end of their set.

Twin Peaks were a lot of fun to watch. They were I think the first band to play on the second day, but still had a decent sized group show up. Really great energy on stage. Their songs sound so much better live! I think this band, The Orwells, and FIDLAR are all fun as hell to listen to and I dream of a day when I can see all of them touring together.

Real Estate was actually mildly disappointing. The singer didn't seem to be having much fun and he sounds pretty bad in person. Just kind of boring.

Mac DeMarco was probably the chillest artist at the entire festival. He held a signing before his performance at the Origami Vinyl booths with some of his merch. They ended up having to close the line early cause there wouldn't have been a way for him to sign everything and still make it on stage. Really nice guy. Was a blast to listen to live. Him and his band mates are obviously all friends and in between songs they'd tell little jokes between each other. Absolute blast and probably my favorite act at the event.

Built To Spill was pretty great. I knew the singer was a bit on the older side, but man he's really getting up there. They were still awesome live and played a lot of fan favorites like 'Life's a Dream' and 'Carry the Zero'.

The Strokes headlined, but I didn't get to snap a picture cause my phone died. I could barely see them from the back since people poached front stage spots by watching Haim's entire set beforehand just to be there. They closed out the festival right that's for sure. As a side note, I watched the middle to end of Haim's set and they're intense live. All three of them have great chemistry with each other, but they added a little twist with some cool group drumming at the end. I think they did a great job and were fantastic at getting the crowd moving.

Overall, FYF was a lot of fun. My friend was telling me it apparently exploded in size this year. I can't imagine it getting smaller next year and I'm sure they'll find even bigger acts. Excited to check it out again next summer.

I've never given them much consideration (although people have told me they peaked at Twin Cinema), but I've become a big fan of Dan Bejar since Kaputt and decided to give the new album a shot. It's solid indie-pop fare. The title track is really good.

I thought Hold Still Life was extremely good, although I preferred the demo version of Happy.

My project, Rice Cultivation Society, I've posted about a bunch of times in the Musicians Lounge. We just released a new song today called "Cellphone," you can hear it here. It's a little different from what we usually do, we've gone in the direction of a more full band sound, but I think it fits our catalog so far.

Alright, I listened to El Pintor. It's not bad, it's just not particularly memorable either. It did have some awesome songs, like All The Rage Back Home, My Desire, Everything Is Wrong and Ancient Ways, but I'm not sure I found those to be more awesome than any of their classic tunes.

What the gently caress? Antics owned. With this album, though, it doesn't feel like they have much left to say. It feels like they're just rehashing some of their same ideas over and over again.

It's weird how disappointing the rhythm section in the last two Interpol albums has been. Sam Fogarino is still a really good drummer but there's an alarming lack of cool bass lines and interaction between the two musicians. The wall of sound mix and overabundance of effects doesn't help much either.

I think El Pintor is better than Self-Titled, but that's not saying much at all. They really need to try something different but I don't think they have the momentum, they all seem pretty tired by this point. If their next album was very dancey and upbeat, like the more energetic tracks from Antics, that could be cool... Or if they switched up the instrumentation... Or if the album centered around a few epic 10+ minute tracks... whatever. I think they've explored every possible facet of "the Interpol sound" and now it's boring as hell.
