Basically every good series that Sierra published was made by now-extinct studios. Impressions (Caeser, Pharoah, Zeus), SWAT, Homeworld, Tribes. Silent Thunder (the A-10 plane games), Lords of Magic and their adventure games are basically all they have left of their own.

Lords of Magic loving owned. I'd pay upwards of $20 for a LoM revival.

Now the wild world is lost, in a desert of smoke and straight lines.
Just a heads up regarding the latest Steam client beta update...

For some reason, after updating to the latest beta, Steam decided to completely ignore the fact that I had two additional Steam Library Folders set up, on other drives, and was only looking for games in the default installation folder.

I was wondering why almost all my games were suddenly greyed out and showing as "uninstalled". The data was still there on the drives but Steam couldn't see it. I was freaking out because the usual methods of fixing this issue (which occasionally happens with the odd game or two) weren't working and the only fix was to apparently redownload each loving game.

On a whim, I went into Steam -> Settings -> Downloads -> Steam Library Folders, et voila, it had completely removed the entries for all but my default installation folder. I added the folders back and my games reappeared.

I like the aesthetic, but the devs seem to be of the opinion that obtuse mechanics give a game an old-school pedigree. Got this one in a bundle ages ago and dig it out every few months, but so far it really hasn't been very compelling.

So we're in the phase of old-school game design where the games look and play literally unironcally how they would have back in the day?

And the designers' only exposure to games from back in the day are the worst of the bad Wizardry games. I often wonder how many of these people are old enough to have experienced the 'old school' when it actually occurred.

HELL SERPENT

To be honest I would mind a game that was distilled down to "form a party of 6 RPG classes into a randomly generated dungeon and fight random encounters of monsters in turn-based tactical combat", sort of like Legend of Grimrock if it had zero puzzles, used Wizardry's combat rather than Dungeon Master's and had procedurally generated dungeons.

The only problem is that I don't really believe that developers trying such a thing would be able to pull off the retro-ness without also remembering to keep the UI and the game mechanics modern.

So uh, as someone who's currently quite happy to keep playing CS:GO, would it be worth getting Insurgency? I've had my eye on it for a little while now, although I haven't really heard much about it, except that it's supposedly a combination of ArmA and CS. I suppose one thing that would factor in is: how big are the maps/how long does each round (or whatever) take? Are they all small and quick CQB maps like CS:GO's, or are some of them reasonably large (I guess more akin to Battlefield's map-size?), so you get more snipers, and battles are more drawn-out?

Since I wouldn't mind looking into it and giving it a go, although I'm just not sure (since I haven't really read all that much about it) about if it'll stand apart from CS (and hopefully taller as well; rather than just being one of the other many "good but not great/CS"-typed FPS' on the market)

Thanks for any and all opinions and information!

EDIT: Oh hey, I just noticed it's got coop - how good is that mode, and how many players does it support? And are there respawns, etc in that mode? Since now I'm thinking that this might be a contender for a LAN shooter with my dad and a friend of ours; although I doubt my dad will like CS, just for the 'one life per round' thing, since he's more accustomed to BF1942+BFBC2

In no particular order: the Insurgency maps range from a little bigger than COD 4 sized, to about twice that. The combat is a combination of Battlefield gunplay (point and you will shoot it, though there is recoil and such factors) and CS deliberation. Guns are, shockingly, immensely lethal and getting torso hit with a Mosin Nagant with heavy ammo will put you down handily. The gameplay itself moves around a quick CS:GO pace, a little faster and with a sprint option, but people will take their time on urban maps due to lethality. Teams split up differently based on modes, with VIP escort modes being the most group-y and TDM being the least. Depending on the mode and it can be like a 10v10 Dust2 B rush or a slow play Nuke.

In the end I'd definitely say Insurgency offers the same thoughtful and methodical (most of the time) gameplay of CS without the hilarious barrier to entry.

That's just CS gunplay, not Battlefield. Battlefield has bullet drop and velocity, Insurgency doesn't.
