I just finished Ys II on Steam a couple of nights ago - why did almost every boss in that game have to be a flippin' Touhou? Dodge bullets, shoot back with Fire Magic. Not that they weren't challenging, but still. I've been meaning to do a hard playthrough of OiF, but not until I get and play through Trails. Falcom/XSeed deserve all the goodwill they're getting for all the great games.

So I'm attempting to play Trails with a controller, but I don't know how to trigger S-breaks, no button has that description in the configuration tool. Which button, if any, does that?

Just tab to the right or left on the Analog stick, and you'll be able to select one of the buttons.

Just finished Trails in the Sky: First Chapter. A solid game with excellent writing, although now I have to wait a few months to see how it ends. I used Cake Attack's LP as a kind-of guide, although I should have paid more attention and followed along at about the same pace, because I missed two Bracer Points in Rolent that it would have been faster to reload to get. Oh well, there are a few Steam Achievements I'd have to replay to get anyway, like the all weapon/armour and Shining Pom ones. Thanks for the tips on how to beat the optional boss, that helped a lot.

Apparently this quest I had to kill a monster "behind Ravennue Village" expired before I even found out where the village is. Lovely. Is there going to be a lot of this kind of poo poo? Do I need to look up a map online?

There's a map button that shows you a world map. e: My game crashed when I tried to retry after my NPC died in an escort mission. Might be another bug. SC Bracer fucked around with this message at 18:02 on Aug 9, 2014 |

Has anyone has issues with getting a black screen right at the start of TiTS? The game launches, I can hear sound just fine, and I can even hear it taking my inputs in the opening menu, but I get no visuals whatsoever?

In configurations, do you have Device (just to the left of resolution), set to REF instead of HAL? When I was messing with configurations at launch I managed to produce your exact problem by setting Device to REF, and just now I was able to replicate it.

I've got it installed, but still get nothing. REF is the only option I have. Edit: Ok, maybe something is going on with my video card. The nvidia control panel crashes instantly when I try to enter it. JTDistortion fucked around with this message at 20:31 on Aug 9, 2014 |

I picked up Ys Origin again, since I only ever beat it on Normal as Yunica. I'm on Hard now, as Hugo, and it's more entertaining than I would have thought from the thread's opinions . I can't seem to reliably do his lightning bolt defense down thing, though. Any tips on making that work, or using him in general? I wonder now what other games are out there like Ys Origin (and I guess Oath in Felghana, but I still haven't played that). I really like this style of play

Ark of Napishtim and to a lesser extant SNES Ys 5. Also Falcom's trails spinoff Nayuta no Kiseki plays like a mix of the ys 7/celceta system mixed with the Oath/Origin one.

Meanwhile, in "Steam is being good to Falcom" news, thanks in large part to Steam they've sextupled their year-over-year profits for this period: http://www.esterior.net/2014/08/lic...nancial-report/ And this doesn't count Trails numbers, which was the best Falcom debut on PC yet. poo poo's gettin' good, sons.

I had decided not to go through Trails until I had finished Shovel Knight, and having done so and booted it up now again I see that they fixed the stuttering that I was seeing in fullscreen mode at 60FPS That sure was probably a busy couple of weeks for Saralene.

Just finished Trails. Actually enjoyed it quite a bit. Hadn't played any jrpg's in years, but I really liked the Ys games so I gave this one a shot. Just to check, the ng+ hard/nightmare options only affect enemy / battle difficulty? Nothing new in ng+ other than getting anything you missed the first time around?

It must be kinda weird if you're a Japanese company trapped in the selling-to-otaku culture of "we will likely only sell 2000 of these therefore we shall price it at X in order to make a profit" to then move to a platform like Steam and then suddenly find out there are so many more people you can sell your poo poo to and you could've been making more money years ago.

Well Falcom themselves are not completely oblivious to the benefits of the PC, otherwise they wouldn't have made these games in the first place. That said I do hope this gets them off of their handheld kick they've had recently. One thing I've wondered about is whether any stink is raised in the Japanese fanbase over the fact that these Steam releases are from a technical standpoint far superior to what is available to them.

Two years ago, the average Japanese Falcom fan didn't know what Steam even was. E: entrepreneurs in Japan mostly see the PC as the console for browser games, western games, and porn games, with exceptions few and far between. Examples of such exceptions are usually franchises that have been MMO-ized like FFXIV and Monster Hunter Frontier, and distribution for those are definitely controlled by their developers' companies directly. I do remember there was this one natively Japanese-made team-based PvP arena called Fantasy Earth Zero, it was the clunkiest thing ever. But its original art design was by George Kamitani! I know that a lot of Japanese PC gamers use US/Euro steam accounts since western games can take forever to get over there. English is widely taught so they can handle the localized games. (Plus I remember reading on the Trails steam forum that with most games on this engine you can drop the Japanese script into the game files and it works seamlessly even with Sara's font changes.)

Making progress on my second Origin playthrough. Hugo gets fire laser beam orbs for his last spell and the thread thought he sucked?

# ? Aug 10, 2014 17:31 |

Hugo's just different from how Ys usually plays. No hack and slash, worse movement options, range completely trivializes a lot of enemies as a tradeoff. I like Hugo well enough but the third character is where it's at.

I put magic on one of the left shoulder buttons, that makes it easy to charge magic without it interfering with your other actions.

Just beat Ys Origin. That was pretty fun, if not generic anime as all hell. Beat it with Yunica, but I will run through it with Toal and Hugo but on Very Easy because running though the same stuff with the others isn't my idea of a blast. Really considering getting Ys 1 and 2 chronicles. I remember I played the TG16 version on the Wii virtual console and lost interest but I think I am more ready for that kind of gameplay now. Is it worth it?

Hugo and Toal actually do get some unique boss fights, so playing it on Very Easy might make those a bit uninteresting.
