Whistleblower will clear up a couple things about the ending. Also, thanks for taking a crack at the Engine formula, blankd. Fun stuff. I'll put that in the post once I'm on my PC proper again. Outlast was actually pretty easy to showcase- I was surprised how nice it played this time around in terms of representing the game in abridged form, and how little went wrong!

This is the best prequel to Metal Gear Rising ever While I liked the game, I find the ending to be hilarious. You are telling me that the Nazis somehow experimented with NANOMACHINES, SON?! I liked thinking that the whole thing was just Miles going crazy... Hoo boy. Okay. As a feminist, I'm not really sure how Whistleblower pulled that one off. The Big Lebowski played with the theme of emasculation as well, just much more elegantly and with a better sense of humor. (Sadly, Outlast is not a videogame adaptation of The Big Lebowski.) Outlast doesn't really want to offend anybody in my opinion, just assault their nervous system- and Whistleblower is more concerned with dramatic, karmic irony and spooks than any deep-seated meaning. Discussing what it does wrong is perfectly fine, but I'd like to keep the thread from turning into a clusterfuck when I do Whistleblower. I honestly had no idea it had such a reputation when I started this. Do not pelt me with stones. e: VV Yeah, I gotcha. It does seem to have a bit of a reputation nonetheless. It's just some crazy loving body horror that wouldn't be out of place in a classic b-movie. That being said the DLC has a non-encounter room that's just loving inspired with how menacing it is. Seriously some guy at Red Barrels put hours into crafting that room.

Wonderful stuff, DumbRodent. Thank you. Some of the best LPing I've seen in a long time. An ideal complement to the game's content and style. My only real surprise / disappointment regarding the ending was the convenient arrival of Black Ops. Otherwise, it seemed perfectly within style. I look forward to seeing Whistleblower!

Ehhh. I dunno. I'm a much bigger fan of 'show not tell' so while I could put up with the ending, I'd have liked it more if it had been somewhat like, say, the ending of Resistance 2, if you played that. Where you actually get to eh, experience the change towards the unnatural. The parts prior to that were fairly effective but it was sorta obvious it was gonna end abruptly with how slow you went. And I hate getting an explanation for what it all was. It doesn't make sense anyway, trying to explain it just undermines the horror, in my opinion. As it was, I was expecting the blops, but I thought they were gonna take him and lock him up to use for the project later. That would have been, fitting, as aren't we now the perfect host for a successful walrider? I have to say I loved that ending but..I kinda feel that the inclusion of the special forces mop up crew was a bit much? I was always expecting Miles to die after that confrontation, but was hoping that he'd die from wounds gained over the course of the game or from another stalker than to be straight up gunned down.

Thanks for that excellent presentation of a pretty cool horror game! It's odd how it's graphically sort of hit or miss, sometimes. There's all the little touches - the attention paid to the hands and how they realistically reach out and steady themselves against things, the gingerly handling of things once you're a few fingers short, the really quite gruesome looking splatters of blood and guts in this last part of the game... and then there's Miles just completely missing a shadow in the final confrontation, a human head stuffed into a tube that looks like a mannequin's head, and Billy, who looks just like a generically quite muscular dude model, missing an opportunity to make him look like a haggard and severely emaciated, pitiful person.

Seriously though those chase sequences really got to me, especally when you looked around and the bastard was right on your tail. God that freeked me out. Even so, I must say that I went into this LP expecting to hate the game and only look at it as an idle curiosity. However, after I finished your first video I was hooked and have eagerly awaited every new instalment. This has quickly become my Favorited LP on the forums and I will be quite sad when it ends. However, we still have the much mentioned DLC yet to see, so I can hang onto these feeling of panic and excitement a little bit longer. Well done DumbRodent, well done indeed.

At first I rolled my eyes at "it was nanomachines all along," but producing nanomachines simply by prodding disturbed people in the right way is a pretty neat twist. And also a hilariously bad idea in every conceivable way. Definitely an Umbrella-grade research project.

I'd like to toss in my thanks for this and the future DLC exploration. This game is wonderful. It's not the sort of game I'd buy and play, but I love watching someone present it as it was meant to be played. Which I think you did. I shudder to think what sort of buffoonery is in the multitudes of random Youtube playthroughs. Waiting for quality product isn't hard at all. It's more than just playing competently without screwball commentary. Your pauses, turns and use of the camera were very 'real'. At least, in so much as one can improvise in a game like this. And I found myself amused and agreeing with our battered protagonists increasingly 'gently caress these guys' mentality. I don't even mind hte inclusion of Nazis, since it wasn't done in the most tasteless way possible and the rest of the product is rather nice. I eagerly await the rest. Even if the game has its plot holes. What doesn't?

Rodent, I'm loving the LP so far! For a first attempt I'd say you hit the nail on the head. The commentary was adequate for the tone of the game, the audio/video quality was good and the voice/game audio balance was well-done. Keep it up, dude! I'm already assuming you'll do Whistleblower so I'm in for the long run! The "ending" felt kinda jarring to me. So you get this painful looking bit of shuffling and tripping around the lab and instead of having something more interesting happen you get two doors opening up to a doctor, who apparently should be dead I might add, and a bunch of generic black ops. For such an atmospheric and long-winded game it feels a bit like a cop-out to have it finish the way it did. Still, maybe the DLC sheds a little more light into it? Also, NANOMACHINES!

I actually liked the nanomachines twist, but then again I am fascinated (and horrified) by stories of shadowy corporations experimenting on hapless prisoners/patients. This is definitely an Umbrella-style project, this whole game has "we love Resident Evil's plot devices" written all over it, without going completely batshit insane like Wesker in RE5.

I'm going to spoiler this theory, just in case. However, I think anyone who's read this far will have already seen the video. So, the Walrider is just Wernicke basically bullshitting Murkoff, and the Walrider is actually a swarm of nanomachines that are being directed subconsciously by their host, who used to be Billy Hope. It looks like it's impossible to direct on purpose, since our protagonist doesn't immediately use it to annihilate those "shoot first" mercenary assholes who are, it should be stated, trying to destroy valuable research material in the form of, well, us. All the "It's a spirit on the other side" nonsense is just a smokescreen. At least, that's my read on it.

Whew! So, that was Outlast. I was surprised by how much I liked it, even after the end (which I freely admit is a bit abrupt), and I think mostly it comes down to the fact that there is actual horror in this game. You see, I've been into horror games for a while now, and something I've noticed a lot is that a lot of horror games... aren't really all that scary, at least to me. In these games (as in most scary movies), there seems to be a preponderance of graphic imagery and jump scares in order to get the heart pumping and wring shrieks from the hapless audience, but these thing aren't scary, they startle. They're cheap gimmicks involving load noises and scary images to provide an adrenaline rush, and after the first few times, it just becomes tiresome. (I'm startled every time the cat knocks something over in the night or some dumbass bird doesn't know how windows work; does that make my cat and the birds auteurs of horror cinema?) In video games, this is further undercut by giving the player a gun making the main character some weapon trained badass marine or something; I think I said in a previous post that the heart of horror is vulnerability, and it is quite difficult to feel vulnerable when one is blowing something apart with a shotgun. I mean, consider Resident Evil, which this game makes quite a few nods to; it continually bills itself as this pants-wettingly terrifying experience, but it's mostly shooting zombies and gross mutants apart with your big guns that you always seem to find ammo for. There's this B-movie element of schlocky horror (campy one-liners, last minute escapes from explosions, scenery-chewing villains that are evil for the sake of being evil, etc) that keeps rearing its head so much that when it tries to be serious and tragic, it just becomes silly. It keeps trying to pull our heartstrings by having NPCs die/turn into monsters, and yeah, that's sad, but unless you take the time to build up the characters and their relationships, as well as setting up a genuine chance that you can actually save them, it's really not going to work. That's why its success grew after RE4 because it embraced its ridiculous premises and became a straight up action game. But Outlast is "survival horror" in both senses. You have no gun, you have nothing but a camera. You wanted to sneak in to get a story, but you have no military training and are completely ill equipped to handle what you find. You have no idea who's going to attack you and who isn't, and for those that attack you, you have no recourse but to run and hide. This is what makes it a survival game, as you spend the whole game trying not to die instead of making the other guys die first. And the horror aspect is fairly solid too, as we seem to have a fairly standard dynamic of being led by a "good" inmate and pursued by "bad" ones that gets completely turned on its head later. (Spoilering just in case, for those who haven't seen the video) You see, Gantolandon called it: Father Martin was truly a madman who worships the Walrider who wants to increase its power and see it spread beyond the asylum, and Walker has been spending the whole game trying to stop that. The big dude was never just murdering people willy nilly, he was eliminating potential Walrider hosts, and pursued Miles so desperately towards the end because he was already so close to becoming one. Walker might be irretrivably broken, but he was really the only one trying to stop this thing from happening, and it is telling that even Miles can't bring himself to hate him in the end. And then you have the ambiguity of the actual Walrider. Is it truly a spirit from beyond, or a collection of nanomachines that destroys things; or is the entire thing in Miles' head? Did Miles merely die in madness, or did his death unleash fury on the commandoes and Wernike? It is that ambiguity and the subversion of expectations, as well as a dedication to making the protagonist completely vulnerable and harmless except, perhaps, at the very end that pushed this game in my mind from a good game to a great one, perhaps one of the greatest horror game in years. to tl;dr it: Horror is not just some big hulk with no face chasing you through darkened halls. We might even be seeing a kind of Stanford Prison Experiment thing going on here where everyone's so used to the need for cruelty that they're all getting that much more cruel. So, did you notice the guy in the pod got his face wrecked? Guess we know now how some people got turned into hamburger. Doesn't explain Trager, though. Also: you did a hell of a good job on that intro, it was pretty sweet.

I think Trager was a mishap of residual effects from the mrphogenic engine. If staring into the footage is what causes whatever happens to happen, then working around the thing would start to affect you.
