The really dumb thing is they were sitting at that first light in the far left lane, by themselves. No reason not to take the middle lane and then turn into the correct lane.

There is a triple left at my exit for the office, and invariably, someone in the outside lane actually needs to be in the left lane, and/or vice versa at the first light which is a short block from the exit. So instead of just getting into the correct lane for their intended destination, they need to do a double lane change in heavy traffic in less than a block. Never ceases to amaze me.

I have to do this turn every day: This is from the exit of the double left turn lanes that the white and black cars on the right are waiting in. See that stupid half lane on the right? Thats the start of another double left turn lane. Problem is, about half the time someone mistakes that for a real lane that the inside of the double turn lane should be turning into instead of the middle lane. So the left turn light goes green and essentially both lanes turn into a clusterfuck of honking horns and everyone cutting everyone else off. Every loving day. I need a dash cam just to create a compilation of the amount of people trying to kill me here.

Caught my first... interesting thing on my cam, not sure if it's interesting to post though. Some guy had his bike rack completely obscuring his license plate, no bike on it. I pulled up next to him and told him the cops might stop him for that. He's like, "oh, I know" and gives me a thumbs up and grin. Is he planning to rob a bank or something?

Over here it was a fad for a while to cover the entire front grille (and numberplate) of the car with shadecloth, attaching it underneath the car to the trim then slamming the bonnet down on the end. No pics because google image search won't find anything with those terms. Ostensibly this is a cool country folk thing to do to stop bugs splattering on the front for whatever reason... This went on for a while and actually become quite widespread as people saw more and more other people doing it with apparently no repercussions so copied the idea. I guess they cracked down on it though as now it's completely gone except for a dedicated few who still use this method, just with a hole in the cloth cut to uncover the number plate.

So I've been meaning to get a dashcam for a few months now, and I read this Jalopnik article a few days ago so I went and ordered one, just got it in the mail and fired it up. Haven't driven with it yet but it looks to be well worth the money. Only issue is that my car's one single outlet is always active, engine running or not, so I've got to unplug it when I park. Something funny I noticed is that I've got a 'battery full' icon on it when I've got it plugged in, even though I haven't put the battery in.

People did this with such frequency in Australia that my state now requires all bike racks to be fitted with a government issued duplicate number plate of the vehicle its fitted to.

Hmm that might make a good rearview / spare dashcam. My main gripe with the cheap units has been long term reliability / firmware stability. Several hours on the internal battery seems quite good, too.

I should do a tally of how many cyclist don't have bike lights at night, it'd be depressing.

You know what would be awesome, is if there existed a dashcam would take one picture a second (instead of 60 fps) when the car is parked. Then I could easily fit a few days of driving and a few days of being parked. I had someone back up into my new car and never caught them. Is there any kind of programmable dashcam or open source project that could do that? Maybe something with a Raspberry Pi?

Once a minute might not be so good; a lot can happen in 60 seconds, they could easily hit, reverse and book it out of there in between snapshots. A better idea would be to rig up a system where it starts recording full speed whenever a motion detector is tripped in its view range.

When did I say minute? I said once a second. It'd only take up 1/60th the storage as full video recording. Just tried my SJ4000HD camera on the drive home from work (nothing exciting happened). The camera was set to take a picture every 20 seconds - might have to lower the interval to 5 seconds or so. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_oXKe7DxEik Looks like YouTube is messing with the quality.

There was a channel in there for wiring so I just shoved the wire in there with the others, then closed it up. For the headliner I just pulled it down a bit and shoved the wire up in there.

Thanks for the tips. I might have to look at some pictures of my car online, because there's an airbag in the A-pillar. Do you have it wired to the fusebox with a briefcase clip, or are you using the 12 volt?
