I dunno spooky black's music but Weeknd was basically a one hit wonder as far as I'm concerned. He was poised to become king of drug-fueled, dark R&B subgenre but instead turned into the poor man's version of Frank Ocean with 1/50th the talent and creativity once everyone realized that all his songs sound exactly the same and are about exactly the same played-out subject matters.

edit: (this coming from somebody who played House of Balloons to death and was ready to become a Weeknd stan based on that release alone. But then he kept making more.)

I think the Weeknd train has passed, you've got a load of dudes who can do the exact same style, like you literally wouldn't be able to the the difference. And yeah, I agree with whoever said all his songs are exactly the same. Good to smoke or chill too but very one note.

As for spooky black, his instrumental are cool but his songs kinda feel unfinished. Also the recording quality on his newest tape is a huge step back from Black Silk. The guy needs to invest in some decent equipment.

I really like a lot of what weeknd does with production & atmosphere but I don't think it's a stretch to say spooky black is a better singer.

I'd hope to get more R&B discussion around because I'm not really up on that stuff anymore besides the kinda-big names and tbh I don't really like most of them that I've heard (of them I probably like Weeknd the best but that's 90% due to the production). Typically I find myself just checking out UK Bass-type stuff, odd rap stuff, or Ferraro-type stuff to get my R&B fix when I want something made in the last 10 years.

Seriously, some extra R&B talk would be great. I have been listening to Frank Ocean and Miguel for so long and I feel like I can't find any artists that match their style that I can really get into.

I forgot about Miguel, I dig a lot of that dude's music. Also Georgia Anne Muldrow for an older sound. Not a big fan of Frank Ocean.

But for some pseudo-R&B recommendations of newer stuff, I'd check out Hurt Everybody's mixtape from this year (tends a bit more towards rap, but the sound and vibe is right), Su Bailey's "The Saturns" (another thing that's a bit more rap but mellow with singing), James Blake's stuff, James Ferraro's recent stuff (Cold, Sushi, Hell NYC 3:00 AM), Jet Age of Tomorrow (Oddfuture group that never got the pub of the others despite having arguably the best output, more instrumental type stuff though), Metro Zu/Lofty305 (another singing/rapping hybrid), Spooky Black.

None of those is really "R&B" (outside of Spooky Black and arguably James Blake) but the type of stuff that I grab when I have an itch for something new rather than the old 70's-90's stuff I'm more familiar with.

Yeah I'm expecting a couple months from now people to get on it (like happened last year). I've been talking it up but haven't really gone in depth. I'm really surprised at how good it is, coming so close to his last album. Only album I think has been better this year is Dark Comedy (as an aside, I think Milo and Busdriver's albums will be out too so hoping those are as good).

To expand on the R&B talk, I highly recommend that anyone interested check out the recently released LP1 album by FKA twigs. May be more pseudo-R&B, but with the way the genre's evolving it's hard for me to really make delineations.

Edit:

Also I know The Weeknd's been criticized in this thread recently--for good reason, I think. Artistically I don't think he's grown appreciably since House of Balloons/Trilogy. I still listen to him quite a bit; it's good music for smoking/drinking/loving. In any case, he recently released a new single. It sounds like...The Weeknd, pretty much. Semi-:nws:

Not to be a fumbling idiot, but is there some place around here to discuss that? I've been listening to a lot of twigs, Jessie Ware, and SBTRKT this summer and haven't found a good place to discuss them around here (granted I haven't looked that hard; also, this is a question derived from ignorance rather than smartassery). There might not be, and I would not be shocked. Also, I don't know, I think FKA twigs is pretty drat heavily informed by R&B but I recognize that I'm a novice to the subject.
