Early on in the game you will soft capped at job level 9 for all your classes. Not that you coulden't get it higher but the amount of JP you need to get from 9 to 10 is more than 1-9 combined. Don't bother job grinding until you get to past Chapter 5

Anybody can be any class and do just fine, the characters are slightly better at certain things than others but the difference is negligible that it might as not even be there, so go crazy with any class set up you want on any characters.

There's a skill that lets you dodge any one physical attack, no questions asked. Unless the enemy is actually casting one the magic spells (fire, blizzard, thunder etc) then the attack is physical this comes in hand to know later on.

Past Chapter 5 you will have the option to do some re-fights. The only thing different is dialog and them being stronger. Chapter 7 refights have some really great equipment to steal.

That game is 12 years old, fairly zoomed in for an RTS, and fully 3d. Twelve units per group is reasonable for what computers could do back then.

Your heroes in the campaign have level limits based on the mission. You'll quite easily hit that cap. If you get to the Frozen Throne expansion, Arthas becomes a minor liability in the later maps due to story reasons.

The units-per-group thing isn't a hardware based limit, since you can have far more than that in your army (or on-screen) at a given time.

Mages are easily the most powerful class.
There's a mage character geared towards healing to be found at the Mages tower, if you need some healing.
Mess around with the tactics menu, you can use it to steer your companions in the right direction during battle.
Each companion has different gifts they'll really like, pay attention to what they say.
Check out whatever the city is called after completing each major area (Redcliffe, Mages Tower etc), there's usually new stuff to find throughout it.

Yeah most of the early escort quests send you to places that will kick your rear end. They're also generally unnecessary, although some of them give pretty good equipment. Check the other boards (there's one at the alehouse in the main square in Gran Soren, one at the inn at Cassardis, and another at the camp where you fought the hydra), a lot of those are monster-slaying quests that you can just kind of play through the game and let them complete themselves.

Also even if an NPC dies in an escort quest, they'll respawn a few days later, so don't worry about loving yourself over too badly.

There are A LOT of other posts ITT about Dragon's Dogma, some of them from me, so I'll just cut to the chase. Feel free to PM me or anyone in the Dragon's Dogma thread though if you have more questions.

9-12 is a good level to head to Gran Soren, so don't sweat that part. 9-12 is also relatively low level, and some areas and enemies will just tear you apart, so don't feel bad about running past unwinnable fights. You can look at the in-game map by pausing (not Back button-ing) and selecting Map. You may have to zoom out if you're in Gran Soren or Cassardis, and from here you can even plunk down new waypoints. Doing story missions is a good baseline; if you're having trouble doing them, then go out and kill some goblins or something, but if you're breezing through them then go ahead and wrap things up.

Now, about escort missions:

Escort missions take you all over the map, to points you may be unprepared to reach at the time they're made available. The important thing to remember, even if you gently caress them up is: it doesn't matter. If you piss them off or lose them on the way, it doesn't matter because escort quests are there to raise affinity (waifu points); the only people whose affinity you should be the least bit concerned with is your future Beloved or the small handful of merchants whose inventory will open up a bit more for their pals. If your escort should DIE on the way there, it still doesn't matter. All important characters respawn after 7 in-day games. If you should see an escort quest on the board and ignore it, that's cool too! They almost never expire, and even then, the rewards are usually uncommon vendor trash or things you can buy anyway.

Pick a favorite mission and see if you can squeak by on Hard/Hardest/whatever. Doing that a few times will net you superior weapons, which make all the difference. Farming easy missions for tons of Armor is also a wise move, especially if you're maining the Valkyrie (which has super low armor gains) or the Support guy (which needs all the survivability it can get).

I guess this is the best thread to ask this, but I'm thinking about starting my first playthrough of Skyrim tomorrow. I'm gonna play the PC/Steam version, so I'm wondering what are some good mods for a first playthrough? I'd like to avoid ones that change the game mechanics too much (I don't mind minor tweaks like UI stuff) since, kinda like I did when I replayed Fallout 3 and New Vegas, I'd like to do later playthroughs with mods that fix mechanics I personally found annoying with the base game during my initial playthrough and/or added some stuff that sounded neat.

To go quickly is foolish. To go slowly is prudent. Not to go; that is wisdom.
There are several mods that should be used even in a first playthrough. Right from the Skyrim mods thread:

Scyantific posted:

Recommended Mods for a First Time Play-through:
Generally speaking, you'll want to do your first Skyrim run with as few mods as possible, that way you know exactly what you want to change about the game.

Goon recommendations for a first timer usually come down to:
-Unofficial Patches
-SkyUI
-Weapons and Armor Fixes
-Clothing & Clutter Fixes
-Even Better Quest Objectives
-Run For Your Lives
-When Vampires Attack
-Better Dialogue Controls
-Better Message Controls
-No Poison Dialogues
-Brawl Bugs Patch
-Timing Is Everything
-The Choice is Yours (so your quest log doesn't clutter up)
-Smart Souls/Aquisitive Soul Gems
-Thieves Guild Requirements (So you don't get roped into the Thieves Guild automatically)
-Bounty Gold (optional)
-Faster Mining
-Guard Dialogue Overhaul (no new dialogue, just makes them use existing stuff correctly)
-Static Mesh Improvement Mod (makes things look worlds better)

Most of these are things that make some of the glaring flaws of the game a bit less harsh (such as getting tossed into the Thieves Guild questline your first time in Riften), or making sure that vital NPCs stay alive during Vampire/Dragon attacks.

Out of this, I'd say the UI, unofficial patches and Run For Your Lives/When Vampires Attack (basically the same mod but affects Dragon/Vampire attacks) are straight up quality of life improvements that don't change the game if you want to have the "real" experience. And understand the "arrow in the knee" joke.

Check a guide for the recommend order of visiting cities. There's some "guard" encounters to keep you away from certain places before you are ready for them, but if you "accidentally" manage to beat them you can end up in a place where quite few encounters can be frustrating because they're really meant for higher level chars.

I see... I'll check those out later and see which ones sound like they'd be worth setting up before I start playing. I'll definitely start with SkyUI and (assuming most/all of those mods I can run without them loving up my current playthrough) see how long it takes me to find something annoying enough to find out if there's a mod that changes/fixes the issue.

For the second thing: On the map where Kael'thas is in jail and Vashj shows up to break him out, there's a secret room with 3 buttons next to 3 sheep named Bah, Ram, and Ewe. Press the buttons in that order. You'll get a secret mission on the next map, and if you beat it you'll get a bonus on the map after it.

Consider manually controlling your characters rather than using the AI system. One trick for the Tower of Ishal or any map with a lot of separate rooms is to set up your own ambushes by have everyone hole up in one room, send one guy to aggro an enemy, and then pull him back to the rest of your party.

Peace Walker is a very, very grindy game but it's also incredibly fun! Use your Fulton Recovery ballons to capture enemy soldiers and recruit them to do various things for you back at base. In the beginning you won't have a way to know who's good at what but that won't be the important thing until later when you need various parts of Mother Base to be certain levels.

I'll also advise that you research the Stinger launcher as soon as you're able, it makes the second boss fight so much easier.

The MGS Megathread we have around here somewhere has all the info you need for where to find the best guys, which missions unlock special features, where to actually UNLOCK certain missions which ones you'll want to S rank to unlock cool stuff, etc. Depending on the version you have and the time of day you're playing the co-op may or may not be completely dead but again the megathread has people that are willing to carry you through missions if you don't mind that kind of thing.

I guess the last thing to remember is that this a port of a PSP game, meaning they didn't have a second thumbstick to work with. So if the game seems a bit easy (guards are kinda stupid, getting headshots is really simple, maps are linear) Just think of those poor people that had to work with THE CLAW to play their Metal Gear.

I'm playing MGS3 right now (having played 1, 2 and 4 previously) and I guess a note I'd have that's not covered on the beforeiplay site is on the nonlethal vs. lethal question.

As mentioned, being nonlethal makes a specific boss sequence quite a bit easier. Defeating the bosses nonlethally will (generally) give you special camouflages (with unique effects) related to each boss. These are generally not terribly worthwhile but nonlethal takedowns are not always that difficult anyway. The one exception is The End whose nonlethal takedown will give you a tranq sniper rifle and will only grant you his camo, which is among the best of them, if you sneak up on him during his encounter and persist in holding him up 3 times.

For the greater question, there is a newgame+ reward for no alerts (cautions/evasions are OK) but nothing for doing an entirely nonlethal run (except maybe a trophy/achievement?). So, just play how you want for that one. Also at the beginning of the game you are asked which MGS game you like, saying "MGS3" will grant you a bunch of extra camouflages which are useful so I'd do that.

Mzbundifund

I'm afraid so.
In Terraria, an item that is called a "wall" actually means a background wall, not a foreground block that you can stand on or interact with. Background Wall items are more than just decorative, since enemies can't spawn in places that have player-placed background walls. To make a safe place where enemies can't spawn in Terraria, you need to build your house's perimeter out of normal blocks, and then fill the space in with background walls. You can make walls out of many blocks at the crafting table. Early on you'll probably need to use wood or dirt or stone or something just to get a safe zone early, later on you can use ice, metal, candy cane, or flaming nightmare bricks stolen from hell itself. They all block monster spawns the same.

WARNING: "[color] dungeon brick walls" are the only walls that do not block enemy spawns. They actually CAUSE the special dungeon enemies to spawn. You won't have to worry about this early though, since you can't actually craft dungeon bricks yourself, you can only steal them from pre-existing dungeons.

You'll want to set up safe zones for a few reasons. First, just so you aren't perpetually harassed by monsters while you're fooling around with your crafting stations. Second, NPCs will move into monster-proof rooms you build. For a room to be suitable habitat for an NPC to live in, it needs to be large enough (I think it's something like at least 8 blocks high and 13 blocks wide) be completely filled in by player-placed (not naturally occurring) background wall, it needs to have a door in the perimeter wall, and it needs a light source, a chair, and a table. There's a lot of NPCs with useful shops that appear once you've fulfilled certain requirements, but every NPC needs one of these suitable rooms to set up shop in, so if all your rooms are full, build a few more so that more NPCs can move in once you meet their requirements. Early NPC requirements are things like amassing 50 silver coins to attract the merchant, finding a bomb to attract the demolitions dwarf, finding a gun to attract the arms dealer, finding a heart container to attract the nurse, and so forth.
