No, there aren't any. I'm just saying that 2's unstructured zaniness was sadly a precursor to some of Fallout 3's worst tone-deaf excesses. Heck, even the ridiculous 'people who think they're vampires' shtick was originally meant to be part of Van Buren.

Fallout 2 was my first Fallout. I have never completed Fallout 1 because it's too buggy and broken and literally every playthrough I've attempted (five, if we're counting) was waylayed by fuckery.

So the tone shift for me actually moved backwards. I was surprised at how seriously Fallout 3 took its setting when I was used to a lot of ridiculousness.

I liked Fallout 1 a lot but there's so little to do and so few different weapons/armor to play with that it's hard to really reconcile. Like, I'm pretty sure the town of New Reno alone has more quests than literally the entirety of the first game, and it's not even connected to the main quest. It's just there for you to gently caress around in!

Kinda hard to go back to killing radscorpions for Aradesh after that.

So many times in that game, I'd show up somewhere like the Brotherhood of Steel, and the game would treat me like I'd already been there and failed some quest, so the playthrough would be ruined.

Last time I tried to play, I made it to the base under the cathedral, hadn't leveled enough to beat it, but every time I tried to leave, it would cut to one of the "you have died" slides.

Even with all the patches, it's completely unplayable. I have no idea how any of you managed to get through it.

I also can't stand gaming on a ticking clock, so I don't think I'll be trying again.

Great game, for sure. Just buggy as hell and not for me.

This fighting isn't what The King would want! He wanted a society for every man to feel free to follow his own path, do his own thing. Where every man is a king in his own right.

Why can't we upload the King to House's mainframe Obsidian?

People suggest melee, but that isn't necessary. All the dead money weapons have a bonus crippling chance, which makes it easy to perma-kill ghosts. And talking to one of the companions permanently gives you the perk that perma kills them. You get given one of the best energy weapons in the game at the very start, and there are plenty of police magnums laying around. Enemies drop decent melee/unarmed and explosive weapons and you can scavenge for mines. Wrt to non-combat skills, literally every skill has unique dialogue, but [companion spoilers] there is one companion who you can only save with max/high speech speech.

A little more investigation reveals that the Roleplay Start mod was the problem after I redownloaded the game. Once I went to Goodsprings, talked to Doc Mitchell, and walked out of his house, I hit the trigger point that gave me the quest. gamebryo

I'd say Science is mandatory for any Energy Weapons run, to craft over/max charge ammo. On the other hand, I don't think Vigilant Recycler is worth a perk choice, unless you've taken everything else you want.

Not at my computer but at the moment I have like 50 science, 80 energy, 80 repair, 55 melee, 50ish guns, 65 survival, 80 speech. My barter/lockpick/explosives/medicine are all around 30 so I'm wondering if any of those need to be brought up considerably for anything important.

What's important to you? If you're a completionist then speech is a must. You may be able to scrounge fission batteries to keep yourself stocked with energy ammo, but aside from that, Dead Money is the best dlc wrt to putting different stuff in for different playthroughs.

With GRA installed, Vigilant Recycler becomes a must for any energy weapons character. Not so much for the recycling aspect (though that helps, certainly), but for the optimized cell recipes that cut your ammo weight in half. Micro fusion cells are ridiculously heavy for some reason.

You did a super job wrapping things up! And I'm not just saying that because I have to!
For being able to save all the characters you'll need 85 speech, no need to boost your Barter or Explosives. High lockpick will let you scrounge a few more supplies though, so it's probably worth putting some points into that. Plus there's a couple of dialogue options that only unlock if you have 75 Lockpick and I always pick those purely for the novelty value. Other than that, yeah, boost the skills you like because there's options for everything in there. If your Intelligence is 5 then drink some booze and talk to the dumbest character you find for some bonus dialogue.

Oh: from the starting area head east and look at the doors along the north walls, one of them is a tiny room with a workbench in it that you can use to make a couple of weapon repair kits and recycle ammo. I'm not sure if there are any other workbenches in the DLC, that's the only one I remember finding.

That room is my favourite room, I felt like I'd found the army depot from Fallout 2 when I stumbled in there. I meant I don't know where there are any other workbenches out in the Villa though.

Oh, also: stop frequently in the central Villa area to stash your loot in the garbage can next to the DLC exit. Then when you're done you can take all the crafting stuff/weapons/armour you didn't use back to the Mojave with you.

There's one other workbench in the Villa, but it's the Villa so the best direction I can give you is "in a closet… kinda to the right… maybe?"

Also, Light Step can be a very handy perk for Dead Money. Not 100% necessary, more for quality of life, but there are seriously a shitload of traps.

I didn't put it in a container. I just piled that poo poo up right in front of the door. You can keep the drat vault, Dean. I'm taking literally every other goddamned thing in the entire casino. It was pretty great seeing the mountain of crap I was taking home even though the rest of Dead Money was tedious.

But then I also filled an entire house with miniguns in Fallout 3 so I guess I'm just an insane hoarder in video games.

Anymore I use mods that greatly increase weapon damage and armor while also using the Increased Wasteland Spawns mod. In runs where I'm focusing on noncombat stuff I abuse Dog a lot, and I still always clear out pretty much every corner of everywhere I go. My game is pretty much built on straight up masochism, but even my first time through the game I played on Hardest on hardcore without too much trouble. The vanilla game is just too easy.

Two early impressions from a melee run, since I haven't done one since like a month after the game came out:

1. Jesus, but I'm going through a ton of healing items.

2. I feel like there's a LOT of guns and ammo early on, but energy weapons/melee/unarmed stuff is fairly rare. This is compounded by how fragile the early melee weapons are. I picked up a bladed gauntlet (unarmed, I know) that was good but only had enough Durability in it for a couple of dozen hits, and hoo boy, but the Broad Machete you start with breaks fast. The Weathered 10mm Pistol and the Sturdy Caravan Shotgun are great weapons that give a nice headstart on the game, but early melee/unarmed is oddly reminiscent of Dead Island or System Shock 2.

Setter is Better.
Melee just kind of sucks. If you know to grab Chance's Knife early on, you pretty much don't use anything else for like, a long goddamn time, which is boring. Unarmed ended up being a lot more interesting, even though I ended up using Pushy most of the time there.

And yeah, unarmed/melee inevitably takes more damage than ranged characters, so pump up the END. Survival is nice too.

There's really no reason to not level both since piercing palm and super slam! are both key for either. If you aren't sequencing breaking or grabbing uniques there's a combat knife in the primm casino that you can use for a while. Melee is kind of a weird run since there's some really good weapons you can get early but if you don't you end up farting around with garbage like bumper sword forever.
