Its great. my office is on a street with one these lanes and due to the lane running down one side of the road, theres no parking there.

So now everyone crams into every spot on one side, making coming out of driveways during peak hour traffic pretty much a guessing game since you cant see past the cars that are parked right up against the edge of the driveway.

I havent seen a single bike in the bike lane since I started.

Any good systems aroud 500 or less with a front and rear cam (possibly more?) that is always recording when parked and saves the data after being hit? My wife's civic has been struck 10 times on the left side when parked in one year by the same car and she doesn't look at the car before getting in it so she has no clue who is doing it, she teaches private piano lessons, so she is always on the road. Now she's using the SAAB, and it has been struck 3 times, same side, and I suspect it is the same rear end in a top hat. I really, really, want to catch the fucker who is doing this as I'm going to sell the Civic and she's going to start using our '14 Kia Optima, which has yet to get a ding.

Does anyone know what the absolute lowest running wattage of a dashcam would be, assuming no display? Just like a 1080p camera with looped recording to an SD card and nothing else at all. I'm wondering if it could be made sustainable in daytime with a small solar panel and small battery or supercapacitor.

I'm going to guess it's south of Gothenburg on a road paralleling the E20. The long stripe line is the centre line but it's a passing zone, I think. Been a while since I've been to Europe but I don't think they use the yellow stripe like we do in N.A.

We use uncut yellow stripes during special roadwork occasions to signal that you shouldn't pass for goddamn serious in Sweden but we still end up with 2-5 queue crashes a day in those areas due to inattentive assholes who should be banned from ever driving again in their lives.

(Västerås, E18 bridge roadwork, many okay cars paid the price because their owners thought their phone browsing was more important than keeping an eye at the road more often than once every hundred yards.)

Here's an odd one.

My G1W, when plugged into the included power supply, farts all over FM. Enough that my new stereo can't pick up HD radio (digital stations) at all with it plugged in (and FM is weak), but shows full signal strength with it unplugged (and FM is fine). If I power up the cam on its internal battery, there's no interference.

Is it the charging circuit in the camera, or is it the power supply it came with? I don't have a spare 12V -> mini USB power supply handy to test this out with, everything else I have is micro USB.

The included power supply has generated a lot of complaints, it's a cheap piece of poo poo. So I'd suggest finding some way to replace that or at least isolate it as the cause with some jerry-rigged alternative.

The USB jack also lifted off the PCB which required the cable to be held in at an angle, but I just cut down a piece of springy plastic and reassembled it which has given it plenty of contact now. I ordered a spare just in case.

Mine does this in stop and go traffic. It's like it doesn't detect enough voltage at idle. I need to upgrade to something better myself. I'm still annoyed that I haven't managed to catch a single interesting incident in the 7 months I have had the stupid thing.

My g1w using the included power supply does similar - With it running I loose all digital radio stations.
I've just bought a better power supply for it. Hoping to get it installed over the next couple of days - am hoping it fixes my problem so I can have dashcam AND radio together!

G1W talk:

I've been running my G1W-C off of a hardwired 12v to mini USB power supply hooked to key-on power in the headliner on my truck and my Miata for a couple months now. Zero problems, zero complaints. Camera comes on and records when you turn the car on and stops when you turn the car off. I just leave it in there all week long. The suction cup has been on the Miata's windshield untouched this whole time too. The truck has the rear view mirror stem mount which also works well. I thought, at first, that I'd get annoyed by the LCD screen but it actually comes in handy to aim the camera because the act of removing and reinstalling the camera in the car invariably yanks the mount out of position a bit.

randomidiot
May 12, 2006

(and can't post for 11 years!)

I've noticed that the mirror mount tends to bounce a lot more than the windshield mount - but it keeps it a little more low profile.

I do need to try a new power supply - right now, whenever the included power supply is plugged into the cam, it farts interference all over the FM spectrum. Just having the camera turned on (on battery) doesn't cause it; having the power supply plugged in, but not connected to the camera, doesn't cause it. If that doesn't fix it, eh, I guess it's time for something a little less cheap. But powering it from my PC doesn't interfere with FM on anything nearby (home theater receiver + alarm clock).

Also, watch out for motorcycles. Can't tell over the kickin rad 90s techno, but the guy on the bike was laying on his horn as soon as the Cruze started to change lanes. Driver even sees him, waves, taps the brakes, and still continues his lane change. :fuckoff:

I'm using AutoGuard Blackbox for Android on my S5, mounted on a $5 holder on my dash. I've got some pretty bad vibrations in the tires or whatever which is very notisable when watching the video.
The program itself works pretty good, it records to standard 3gp files, adds speed and location-data as a subtitle (.srt) file.
It's got a simple start-button and a accident-button next to it that makes sure that the last recorded minute or so is write-protected. It can also be setup to automatically write-protect when an impact is detected but i found it too sensitive (cobblestone-road triggered it). It can also call / text a contact if it detects an accident.

I mounted the holder upside-down so the home-button was facing me instead of away from me and that caused the video to be recorded upside-down, but i'm guessing that's just how Android does it. Made it a bit hard to review footage on the phone because it would rotate no matter how i did.

Yesterday i met an Audi overtaking a lumbertruck when me and three other cars were coming from the other direction, didn't stop him from his attempt though.

Police have released footage of a motorcyclist's final moments, captured on his helmet camera before he collided with a car.

David Holmes, 38, was riding at 97mph when he died on the A47 at Honingham, Norfolk, in June last year. He collided with a Renault Clio as it turned at a junction.

Police said the driver, who admitted not seeing Mr Holmes or the car travelling behind, was prosecuted in April. Mr Holmes' family allowed the film's release in a bid to try stop more road deaths.

His mother Brenda, of North Walsham, said: "I know he rode fast, he loved speed, he loved motorbikes. "This isn't an easy thing to do but I just hope that someone benefits from it."

Apart from making me sad and making me look 4 times before turning, I found it a very powerful use of this technology. Hopefully it will save a life.

I ride motorcycles. I'm all ready to jump down a driver's throat when they pull out in front of bikes and make them wreck. But this guy was doing 97 mph. Can't really blame the driver for not seeing something with such a small frontal area moving that fast. Also the irony of the rider going over "slow" painted on the ground right before the collision, oof.

The 38-year-old was an experienced motorcyclist, who had been travelling at speeds of up to 97mph as he returned home to Sprowston from King’s Lynn on June 8 last year but an inquest heard that driver Benjamin Austin would have had sight of him and his bike for seven seconds before the collision.

Austin, 29, of Long Lane, Stoke Holy Cross, pleaded guilty to causing death by careless driving in April and was disqualified from driving for 18 months and ordered to carry out 130 hours’ unpaid work.

I think it is signifcant that the prosecution was 'causing death by careless driving' (up to 5 years in prison), rather than 'causing death by dangerous driving' (1 to 14 years in prison). The actual sentence probably reflects how they apportioned blame.

I dunno, I'm still firmly in the camp of "biker should have slowed down". You just can't expect a car driver to predict a collision with a speeding anything. I'm shocked that they prosecuted. Shocked.
