The trial thing, do you get data? How much? Can't tell online, the closest thing I can see is 50mb and  aint happening if that's what it is.

I'm going to stick it out for a while longer just because it is such a good value and I spend most of my time in areas with good LTE. It's just a letdown coming from AT&T's superior network. Yeah, I'm about to jump ship from T-Mobile because of this. I like their policies and prices and whatnot, but the fact of the matter is I get exactly zero signal at work in the area where I am for most of the day. If I walk halfway across the building I might start to pick something up, but that's it. If I'm at home I'm on wifi anyway, so 90% of the time I need cellular I'm at work, and I'm basically getting nothing right now unless I go outside.

News from the Tmo event today: wifi calling for all Tmo phones from here on out, and free routers. http://www.theverge.com/2014/9/10/6132015/t-mobile-rolls-out-wi-fi-calling-for-all-of-its-customers I didn't know that any android phones didn't have wifi calling, but they will now. And Apple's new phones had wifi calling as one of their line items, so I assume this bridges the gap for those. I guess maybe IOS8 might enable it on the iphone 5S and earlier? We'll see.

All I know is that when my wife went to get her iPhone 5s from the T-Mobile store, she was surprised that they only had 16GB models in the store. If you wanted anything different, you had to have it shipped to your home first. I'd love to try out the Plus and see if it's too big, but afraid that I'll miss the preorder and it will take me a long as time to get the phone I want.

Despite the "CellSpot" name, it's just a WiFi router manufactured for T-Mobile by Asus. There's nothing cellular involved at all. The only thing really special about it is that it prioritizes T-Mobile voice packets by default, so you can stream all the porn (this was actually John Legere's example) and Netflix you want and still make calls. T-Mo indicated the router would only be free to Simple Choice customers. But they also said that about the Music Freedom that dork plan users are getting. $99 for prepaid or extra routers. The reason for that, as far as I can tell, is that being able to handle the switchoff between a WiFi call and a normal call requires baseband changes (no M8 roms based off of anything but stock offer WiFi calling as a result). It might be possible for T-Mobile to code an app to "listen" for the switch, but I have a feeling that the battery life would suffer majorly as a result. Funny thing about the Personal CellSpot: I bought the router that they're using (an Asus RT-AC66U) literally two days ago for $150 (hooray for return periods). Even if you don't need the signal boost, I highly recommend getting the router, because it's a great unit and a goddamn steal at $25. One thing that occurred to me about the international WiFi calling--what's to stop a guy who lives in the USA buying a cheap WiFi calling able phone and sending to their friend who lives out of the country (say, Mexico) for free international calls? Or is that a hidden "feature" of the service?

Reading the fine print, it looks like the router is a borrow, not own. Wifi Calling is part of the GSM spec (GAN) and google just needs to add it to the android kernel already. Now that iOS 8 has it built in, Android is the last mobile OS without it-- WinPho has it, Blackberry has it, Symbian had it, The final generation of Nokia dumbphones had it.

The "damage" part gives me pause, as every wireless router I've had has started to exhibit issues, if not straight up die, within a year or two of ownership. When I went to Europe last year, I just rented a mifi and used that to connect my phone to. Calls/texts to the US are local because the IP network doesn't care where you are.

They push Wifi Calling because they can market it as seamless compensation for lovely coverage. I just leave it off because I get decent coverage at home, and when I actually need it and am on hotel wifi it's complete garbage.
