Rocky was an upsale of Lil B. Now that basegod's star has dimmed, Rocky doesn't have an audience. It was pretty shrewd how someone capitalized off the the swag trend like that and I hope RCA or Sony bought them a boat that year. SchoolboyQ has "it" but he is stuck on the westcoast. He could be like 2Chainz and have a 2nd career if he ever leaves TDE. Kendrick's success isn't weird IMO but it is impressive that he could pull of being the "deep but relatable" westcoast Nas thing. Many have tried. People rather listen to Busdriver but not Childish Gambino *camron face* https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r39sRNV3TmE temple fucked around with this message at 05:18 on Sep 11, 2014 |

It was pretty shrewd how someone capitalized off the the swag trend like that and I hope RCA or Sony bought them a boat that year. Rocky has "it" as much as any rapper out right now. His audience is people who like his good songs? I get what you're saying with the swag stuff but calling him a rich mans Lil B is retarded. Schoolboys career is way bigger than 2 Chainz's was as Tity Boi. He'll be fine he just released a pretty mediocre album. I don't know if it's a good indicator but his song Studio is on the Sirius stations at least 30 times a day. And he's doing sold out shows around the country/world. He doesn't need TDE at all though. I don't need TDE at all though either And that's pretty much what I meant by Kendrick's success being weird. He's pretty much the only rapper in his lane and doesn't really have any direct competitors I feel.

I think I'm leaning toward agreeing with temple on this, even the Lil B comparison, mainly because Rocky's best poo poo pretty much is completely tied to getting some of Clams Casino's best beats (similar to Lil B), and he is completely ordinary on most everything else. I think it's a situation where he might just be a lucky product of a good producer's prime. Schoolboy Q released what was honestly a pretty boring album aside from a few cuts, I don't understand what him being on the west coast has to do with anything, it's LA, not loving Minnesota.

I think SchoolboyQ could bigger at a different label.

I wouldn't say I'm a Chris Brown fan or anything but the guy has some decent songs and I can't really be bothered to care about his personal life when half the poo poo I listen to is about being crack dealing murderers.

EATIN SHRIMP posted:Rocky has "it" as much as any rapper out right now. His audience is people who like his good songs? I get what you're saying with the swag stuff but calling him a rich mans Lil B is retarded. Rich man's lil b isn't a bad comparison if you look at how his music is presented/consumed rather than the content of their respective work. Stylistically he's almost nothing like Lil B (besides having a lazy flow) and he's a lot less creative or interesting, but he does have a similar appeal. That all sounds negative but I don't think he's bad (and tbh his albums were pretty decent), I just don't think he's that special and he's riding a wave of popularity due to how his image fits in with some current trends, rather than any appreciation for him music. I will say though it'll be interesting how his next stuff is received, since unlike a lot of younger dudes who came out around that time he's not put out music every 6 months or whatever. Tyler is actually probably a better comp for his career-mixtape that build buzz for a debut that was decently received, buzz dies down while he waits to release an album on a more traditional release schedule. You even have Earl playing ASAP Ferg's role of the dude whose arguably better in his crew (although it ends there as all of OF, including Jasper who is pretty much horrible, is better than ASAP Mob). That's about where I see Rocky coming out-easily able to make a career at music and get attention as someone right on the edge of mainstream-underground recognition. I agree with you a bit about Kendrick though. Arguably dudes like J.Cole and his ilk would be his competition, but he's so far out of their league as a rapper it's not really competition. Somehow he got to make an album that has nothing on it that sounds like radio pandering, and it actually did well. And you dudes do realize that Q's album was released on Interscope same as Kendrick's right? Don't know why you dudes would get the idea TDE is holding him back or anything unless you also think it's holding back Kendrick. And fwiw when I mentioned him before I was speaking more on the quality of his album rather than any comment on how successful I think he'll be (since honestly it seems almost random at this point).

I have no idea how Q managed to get 2 Chainz to feature on a Mike Will beat and somehow made the least radio friendly song on his album (this is a slight exaggeration)

Half of the rappers living or dead have been under Interscope's umbrella at some point. Being on Interscope means gently caress all. It's all about management at this point. But for whatever reason, the industry is dominated by people out of Miami, Atlanta, and NY (excepting Houston). Macklemore and Kendrick broke the curse but west coast rappers tend to be big only on the west coast. In a world were French Montana had a run, SchoolboyQ should be able to do better. I'd say RiffRaff and Action Bronson are probably more well known, featured, "relevant" than a lot of west coast rappers and they are bit players at best. It is funny that Chef Keef arguably got worse after he signed at Interscope. temple fucked around with this message at 07:56 on Sep 11, 2014 |

I have the actual disc for Oxymoron and it was the only cd I had while in my last car. I think I listened to it at least 50 times. I think its actually really underrated. Sure it's not as good as GKMC, but it definitely has some great songs. Check this Youtube channel out for like every drat new Gucci thing, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vonLRoK14mM

The same managers who got Kendrick known are also handling Q, so I don't see how being on interscope is meaningless. The industry is hardly dominated by any city, and if it was the only one you mentioned you could make a case for would be Atlanta. Nobody outside of NY gives a gently caress about NY anymore, and the people there don't even care that much anymore it seems. And Bronson & riff raff are more well known and featured than a lot of dudes, many of whom are in NY so I don't see how that proves anything. Also fwiw Q sold like double what French did, so it's not like dude's done nothing. 200k isn't amazing, but in the current climate it's definitely not bad for a somewhat niche dude's first major label album.

I'm sort of surprised Action Bronson isn't more known at this point, just purely out of a viral sort of "look at this crazy fuckin guy" youtube epic meal time kinda way. I got a lot of respect for the guy though, he's a great rapper and he's also just firmly doing his own thing. He works with a lot of great producers too, and just makes a whole lot of unique music. He's come a long way since everyone was calling him the "white ghostface". Love his work.
