In case anyone is looking for the non-cloud backup solution, you can purchase LTO3 tape drives for < 100 dollars on ebay, plus tapes can be had for ~10 dollars each. Obviously it's also a solution that has a huge learning curve... but once you have it all figured out, you can back up your data at 80MB/sec.

So I've been trying out NZBGet as an alternative to SABNZBD, and the only thing I'm really missing is a tray icon. Is there a way to have one show up for NZBGet if I want to see if something's downloading and pause/resume easily?

Sometimes they do 2tb for $60. I'd say go for the 1tb block, personally. They don't really ever put the small blocks on much of a discount, and you get a lot more for your money with a discounted 1tb block.

I kicked ND to the curb to get with Maximum Usenet for $4 a month a while ago. Service is Highwinds and is exactly the same as ND. This is a pretty shameful move on their part!

Maybe not the right thread, but I've got to start somewhere. So right now I run a home NAS (I've bounced around between a Synology Diskstation and home grown solutions) which works great, but the problem is I travel on a fairly regular basis and am looking at spending the next few months away from home entirely. I've been trying to work out how I could push my solution to be more accessible from anywhere and I was hoping someone here might have a similar style solution in place or even just some ideas. The two options I've found that seem vaguely promising: 1) For TV shows switch from using Sickbeard to showRSS and put.io. I can access put.io from on the road and then just transfer everything I haven't watched back down to my home NAS when available. Then just manually upload any specific data I'd need and go from there. 2) Rent out a VPS to do, basically, as above but by migrating my existing setup to the VPS from the NAS and just syncing up periodically to free up space on the VPS. Gives me a lot of flexibility but honestly never tried establishing something like Sickbeard remotely with the ability to track shows while splitting off the files periodically to a different machine. Also not sure how I can incorporate my existing backup solution (Crashplan) into something like this, although I'd suspect there wouldn't be a problem just running Crashplan on both my NAS and VPS. Basically just looking for a way to keep up to date with my movies, tv shows, and music while not tied to my house for extended periods of time.

That would work for short term trips, but I'd like to be able to shut off everything (well, obviously I'd keep stuff like power and water, but why keep the electronics running even if they are relatively cheap) at home for my upcoming long term trip. Plus I use a VPN service already that doesn't allow port forwarding, which admittedly I could just shut off and run my connection normally and tunnel the server traffic rather than the entire network. I'm also not sure I'm comfortable having a permanent open path into my network either, even if it's secured.

I'm on the el-cheapo Newsdemon plan and was just reading about that bullshit they pulled with the "lost accounts". My account is fine (I'm doing 100GB per month at absolute maximum) but as someone mentioned I've just noticed that my renewal date has been sneaking earlier each month (12th-11th-10th-9th), anyone else have this? I don't want to get into specifics, but I find it's great for some older content and useless for others. Buy a cheap block plan and see if it fits your needs. I'm a small enough downloader I just stick to the blocks and it fills my needs very affordably.

A lot of the providers they buy (or resellers) are on infrastructure that barely runs, and it says that way. It all hits the same back end, but auth is... Interesting, and this isn't necessarily intentional. Also, "top users", like "top users" anywhere else whose business model is "sell capacity you hope they won't use to the max" (gyms, cable providers, shared hosting, openvz vpses) are a plague they're probably happy to be rid of.

Ok So I got on the NZBDrone train early this year. Apparently I'm way behind on updates. I go to the update section of my NZBdrone and click install on the latest version. I get sent to the install page instructions. The instructions seem to be from the vantage of a fresh install/new user. Which makes me a little gun-shy since I don't know what I'm supposed to do with regards to overwriting my existing NZBDrone. Just plunk it in the same folder? I won't lose my setup/configuration? Or what? Also, do I just download latest or if I am behind do I need to work sequentially?

Even if it were the case that the FBI haz your IPz, I don't see why it matters. As far as I remember, the only copyright cases were brought against people uploading, knowingly or not (torrents), as the penalties are much higher and easier to prove. Going after downloaders that aren't re-sharing, is not worth it. Unless you're downloading kiddie porn, and in that case, gently caress you anyway.

It's easier to find Highwinds Block Accounts than it is Astraweb ones so I'd rather pay $2.50/mo extra for my primary and have a wider pick of block accounts. Quick question on the cloud backup stuff from the last page: both CrashPlan and Backblaze seem pretty well reviewed, the biggest difference seems to be that CrashPlan can't see mapped/USB drives in Windows. Since the intro packages all specify only backing up from a single machine, my plan would be to put the client on my main and just dump stuff onto USB sticks for everything else. I'm also assuming this all works by pointing the client at a directory and telling it to upload all the contents. Would Backblaze be the best fit for something relatively simple like this?

CrashPlan can't see USB drives? That's ludicrous. There goes me using them this year then, as I have about 4TB inside the machine and 12TB in externals. e: did I misread you, as http://support.code42.com/CrashPlan/Latest/Backup/Backing_Up_External_Hard_Drives seems to indicate this isn't a problem in Windows.

So couchpotato went loving nuts and tried to download everything I'd ever downloaded all over again. The dev was completely unhelpful when someone opened a bug about it. I need to figure out how to turn off auto-update. Or replace couchpotato.

Right that's what I meant, I just confused 'networked' with 'external' because  But OK then if I can just dump everything onto USB sticks/drives and plug into my main PC to back that data up then CrashPlan could still be the way to go, if that's the de facto GoonTM recommendation.

If dog goes down it might be an issue, but its not worth the hassle for me to deal with CP. Just have your downloader rename the movie and you are good to go.
