Can someone explain the Gucci Man to me, like I'm not a regular or anything but usually from what I read you guys mostly praise 'good' music and pan the garbage white noise that is 93% of rap these days but for some reason you all unanimously adore this guy, seemingly unironically.

I'm not going to pretend I've dissected this man's music or anything but I do recall being in highschool when Freaky Gurl dropped and I guess it was catchy but most people I knew couldn't get over how hilarious the dude looked, then the other hit Lemonade has one of the coolest beats of all time IMHO and was a pretty great song to listen to for that reason but other than that I, and pretty much every one of my peers kind of dismissed and forgot about him. For understandable reasons seeing as how after a few songs the only thing you(I) can usually pick up is BRRRRRR!!! BRRRRRR!!!!or how much loud/drank/diamonds/whatever he has/is on/is wearing...just like the other 93% of rap.

I'm honestly not trying to troll, I even listened to most of the tracks on the new mixtape ya'll are talking about to see if anything changed from what I remember. First track, POUNDS OF LOUD second track I skip to randomly, something something POUNDS OF LOUD. Like, I'm not going to lie those are some of my favorite producers he's working with and it's amazing to see how they all feed him beats but that seems to be carrying him more than anything he's personally responsible for.

Gucci basically just has enormous charisma and credibility as a trap rapper. It's a niche of rap specifically about glorifying drug sales and bling and so POUNDS OF LOUD is exactly what people are listening for and in most people's opinions nobody does that sub-genre better than Gucci. Dude has like 65 mixtapes and constantly puts out free music. You'd have to have a stick up your rear end to hate on Gucci.

I don't like Gucci as much as a lot of thread regulars but he has a signature sound, a great ear for beats, is somehow one of the better dudes at breaking out new artists and he has a prolific catalogue.

Oh and regardless of what anyone says he can also rap his rear end off when he wants to.

The perfect day needs the perfect set of wheels.
I'm in a position where I can recognize the talents and skills that Gucci has, and still not like his music, because I don't like trap. He's loving amazing at what he does, but just like a loving amazingly cooked bit of calamari or something, I can recognize the skill and talent that went into making his music without wanting to eat/listen to it.

gucci is one of my favorite rappers ever because he's a hilarious writer, has an amazing ear for beats and a mesmerizing flow. but that was the old gucci. dude's in prison and the mixtapes coming out now are just old verses that went unused because they weren't good enough mixed with left over metro boomin/zaytoven beats. even before he went to prison he was having some weird mental breakdown that lost him all his friends and it was really noticeable in his music too.

none of these mixtapes come even close to stuff like the burrprint 3D, mr zone 6 or chicken talk. the guy above me claiming gucci just released his best tape ever is crazy

Check this out^ Mixes by DJ Premier and HWLS on Diplo and Friends. HWLS is Ta-ku's side project with Kit Pop. I've met both dudes and they're great people. It's categorized as trap but it's not EDM style at all, both these dudes have been DJing hip hop shows and loving around on MPC's for years so they go deep with their stuff. You will probably like it if you like raps.

There are a lot of gucci stans (me included) in this thread (and no doubt the # here is disproportionately high compared to most rap circles as temple pointed out) but i dont think any of us would try to claim his best days are here or even ahead of him. How could they be with him being literally incarcerated. His music career peaked a long time ago. That being said, it is still impressive that he (or his label, rather) can engineer a tape worth listening to, much less a dozen per year. Gucci is prolific. Compare him to someone like Lil wayne who also had a golden run of mixtapes circa the 2006-2008 period and enjoyed broader mainstream success for way longer than Gucci. He still puts out mixtapes from time and time along with studio albums and they're actually unlistenable.

Meanwhile, Gucci still has a strong cult following that will eagerly await his 15th mixtape of the year despite knowing full well it is material of unknown age reworked over newer beats. I think there is a little more to that than "old habits die hard." drat, just give the man a little credit. He is still fun to listen to for all the reasons others have pointed out above and this latest tape of his is actually above avg compared to the rest of his recent tapes.

Yeah pretty much this. I always thought he sucked, but even dudes I knew who used to get down with him in his 06-09 peak period pretty much don't gently caress with him anymore. I'm still not sure if all this excitement over Gucci's frankentapes isn't just some elaborate troll or a bunch of dudes overcompensating because they missed the bus before. At this point Lil B has better quality control. I recommended someone create a thread for him since I will easily admit he's (or his lawyers/handlers) are prolific as gently caress and a lot of people really don't care, but otoh it's not like it's that hard to ignore the monthly gushing a handful of dudes do over whatever new tape is dropped under his name so w/e.

As for the broader statement of 93% of rap being white noise/garbage or whatever, I'd really take issue with that. Not this year specifically, but the last couple or so have seen a whole lot of styles and content flourish and unlike in the past it's not been limited to either whatever's on the radio & your local scene. And dismissing rap as trash based solely on content isn't really a thing that should be done.

Yeah despite the slump of 2014 I'd say we're in a pretty drat exciting age of rap. This decade (as in 2010-now) has been particularly strong. Regardless of how someone feels about Gucci Mane's particular method, stating that 93% of rap is crap or whatever just makes you sound unqualified.

Yep. I'm not into trap (and thus am not a fan of Gucci) but won't deny he's a hell of a rapper.

Sure there is a lot of amateur rap out there, a lot of it bad, but there is so much good stuff too, partially because the barrier to entry is lower than ever and exposure to appreciative audiences is easier (though it could be argued that such exposure is getting more difficult due to how much stuff is now out there for consumption).

Hrm yes 93% was definitely a Real Statistic and nothing like hyperbole for posting's sake.

Also to clarify, and since you've seemed to have hit on it already I'm mostly talking about this year. I love music when I love it but as much as I'd love to bang GKMC en route to work like I have for the past 16 or whatever months I just can't stomach it anymore after that many repeats and I'm starving for the next thing that simply isn't being sated by the likes of Kirko Bangz, T.I., Wiz Khalifa, etc -- the latter two I feel have fallen off hard.

Return of Mr. Perfect is absolutely more consistently good than any tape you mentioned. It might not be his absolute best work but the whole tape is good start to finish, there's not a single song I'd be skipping every time through. That's pretty good for a frankentape of recorded verses. I don't understand how anybody could deny Gucci is still putting out Good Rap. Every one of the last several tapes he's dropped have been top 10 on Itunes, so certainly some people still care

Since this is an R&B thread too now, what are some of your guys favorite R&B songs from the 2000's? Being 19 I still really love some songs from that period as they hold a lot of personal significance, but I pretty much just listened to whatever was on the radio or what my older sister was listening to. the burrprint 3d is one of the best rap mixtapes ever released and you're saying some cobbled together tape full of verses and beats that weren't good enough to release when gucci was still free is way better than it. the tape came out like yesterday too so you can't have listened to it more than a couple times yet.

There aren't any songs on Return of Mr. Perfect that are better than Dope Boys or Excuse Me, but it also doesn't have any songs I have to skip like No No No or Real As They Get. It's not his best, I was wrong with that, but it is consistently good. That's all. Every song is at least decent. Don't get me wrong, I think Trap Back is probably his best work and Burrprint 3d is fantastic but for a prerecorded verses mixtape his latest work has been pretty drat good.

Yeah the impressive thing about the new Gucci tape is its consistency. It got over-shadowed by the standard thread hype but for a tape I didn't even know was coming out it was a pleasant surprise. We all know Gucci tapes normally have a handful of really ill-advised, annoying songs that get skipped every time. Return of Mr Perfect is remarkable in that it has no such tracks as far as I'm concerned :colbert: It is anything but cobbled together.
