I'm wondering if anyone has run across Death Drive's album lyrics posted anywhere. Google hasn't helped me.

I saw he had a new album coming out, hadn't checked it out yet. I've always been really mixed on his stuff cause he's like the prototypical Anticon dude (which makes it more strange to me that he left). His actual "presence" and whatever is near zero imo, but he actually has pretty decent rhymes, especially if you like the more abstract stuff. Kinda like a poor-man's Sage Francis.

Yeah I kinda liked their album, seems to fit in well with the NY revival type stuff that's been coming out lately. No idea about their live show though (although tbh I just assume all live shows suck outside of a few exceptions)

Yeah there was a very clear sea change in this very thread re: Ferg when Trap Lord came out. I remember someone posted a really good freestyle from him and the rest of A$AP Mob and he outshined them all right around that time too that was somewhat foretelling.

That being said I think his verse on Old English is the worst of the bunch.

That song's cool but I'm pretty sure dudes been doing "sad rap" since before yung lean was born.

Rich Homie Quan kinda sucks, and Thug's really erratic. I hear song's with dude that are just berserk, but then he'll have a giant clunker.

I agree dude's usually better on features ("Freestyle" with Migos and Thug is one of my fav tracks of the eyar).

Speaking of Migos, for the dude who initially asked about Thug I'd check them out for sure. I have to admit I was really wrong about them, when I first heard about them around when YRN dropped I thought they'd be junk for sure. Same with Ferg really-dude's stuff seemed like junk on that ASAP comp but Trap Lord was a real good album.

I'm genuinely interested in this as most earlier stuff I've heard is pretty thug or positive with the exception of maybe like some anticon stuff or sage Francis. Who else makes opressivly negative rap?

Edit: I really like devil rap or really most stuff like that but it's still pretty full of braggadocio but that's still pretty much gangster rap and not really self critical

Cage is pretty dark, I don't think that fits the "around longer than yung lean's been born" criteria though.

e; also on depressing white rapper chat the Sadistik album Ultraviolet from this year had excellent production and great lyrics, I don't care much for his voice but the rest was good.

As for the second part, I don't really get that much self-critical stuff coming from Yung Lean. Like I get the whole S A D B O Y S thing but tbh dude doesn't really put much behind it. Like "My Mind's Playing Tricks On Me" is an extremely negative oppressive song, or "Suicidal Thoughts" even if they're by dudes normally known for more gangsta stuff. And in those cases (especially suicidal thoughts) it's actual, serious emotion not "oh dude I'm totally sad, see how sad I am because I keep saying it" that Yung Lean does. You could also throw stuff like "T.R.O.Y." in that category, some early Common stuff, etc. And yeah those dudes obv do other stuff and mix in braggadocio and gangsta stuff, but for every sad Lean song dude seems to have two about getting hosed up and how much poo poo he's got.

And I was exaggerating a bit about before he was born (although Biggie and Geto Boys would both def fit that criteria) but you named a few dudes doing similar stuff from way back, at least when dude was probably a toddler. Cage was mentioned, you could also throw in early Eminem. Blueprint does a bunch of stuff like that (especially now), Louis Logic used to throw in stuff like that between his braggadocio stuff (I can't speak to anything he's done in the last few years though, dude seemed to fall off hard). One Be Low/Binary Star had a bunch of songs like that, most of the Atoms Family dudes, Aesop Rock, pretty much the back half of XXX/first half of Old were all stuff like that, etc. MF Grimm's a lot about that too (although he's got a lot of the gangsta stuff too, since that's what he was into when he got shot). 808's & Heartbreak (which is prob the most influential album of the last 10 years, at least in rap) is essentially the blueprint for all these rap dudes who come around now and just emote or w/e on a track.

I can't remember who, but I gave a bunch of suggestions of negative/"dark" rap earlier for someone, I could dig that up and maybe make a playlist type thing (I actually have a couple that kinda fits that criteria already on spotify that I listen to a bunch). I totally get down with a lot of that stuff because I can listen to it at work and it puts me in the right mood (hating everything and sad/angry as gently caress-can't show up and be all cheerful at work!).

beer pal posted:

Yeah pretty much that to the dude asking about him. He's a pretty bad rapper, but his production and autotune stuff cover for a lot of that.
