Idk I'd always thought for a group to be considered good, they had to actually contribute. I mean they might as well have called them 50 Cent and the G-Units for all the value they added after Game left. Dudes are anonymous as hell, and rap doesn't really need backup singers. Like G-Unit isn't even the best rap-group-featuring-a-dre-protege-and-his-weed-carriers (that would be D12).

50 can still make some ok music, but he's suffered the same fate that most of the super-famous rappers have where they're too far removed from whatever they used to make their best music. His style never quite kept the traction that other dudes had that allow them to make lovely platinum albums from now until the end of time-his "hard" poo poo was never what drove his popularity and his R&B-thug songs got pushed out of the clubs by the south. Dudes still got his money and is rich as gently caress so it's whatever, but it's still something to see someone who was definitely THE MAN when he started be almost entirely musically irrelevant now.

They're worldwide superstars now-in that dudes in the US sure ain't paying to hear their poo poo so they gotta go to Europe and whatever. I'm sure they're huge in Estonia! The Pips were also worldwide superstars. The only "hiatus" they went on is a hiatus of 50 being able to carry their mediocre asses. Tax writeoffs only work when you got income coming in yourself and it's been years since 50 himself been able to sell for poo poo.

None of those dudes have a career without 50. Hell, he was making GBS threads on those dudes right up to and into their "reunion". It's not that they didn't have a couple of nice singles or whatever, I just don't want some poor unsuspecting dudes reading "best group ever" or something and taking that at all serious.

Wu-Tang really only have two good albums as a group. If you take solo albums into account it might be a different story.

Personally I would say the best are The Roots (although it's probably disingenuous to call them a rap group) or A Tribe Called Quest. I'm struggling to think of groups with more than two good MCs besides the Beastie Boys.

RunDMC, followed by Public Enemy. Many people had brands but Wu was the biggest, almost prototype for how to brand a rap act. They are my personal favorite (probably b/c I was in high school at the time) but you can't deny RunDMC for bringing hiphop to the global stage. PE made the first "ain't your parents" form of hiphop. Rebel without a Pause was the song your parents told you turn off and they embodied the 90s generation. The funny thing is, hiphop was advancing so fast, those groups were popular in the face of a lot of competition. They might not have been as large if they came out a year later.

You might not like their style but most of them are good rappers in their own right.

That's a really broad statement to make and is obviously pretty wrong, plenty of rap groups have more than two good MCs

Why is it disingenuous to call The Roots a rap group? Also, did the Beastie Boys have some extra hidden members that made them have more than 2 good MCs? Also there's been a ton more groups that would easily have as many good MCs as the Beastie Boys, if that's your criteria.

Run DMC get credit for helping make rap into pop music, but their stuff sounds extremely dated now. Also, I think it's quite telling you'd pick a song that's from the 80's as embodying the 90s generation.

The thing with rap groups is that there's rarely room for more than 1 or 2 really dominant vocalists on most songs. And when you do get dudes who are all good, they'll typically want to bolt for solo stuff. This isn't limited to rap at all though, R&B and even rock you rarely have multiple front men.

Yeah supposedly all the TDE dudes were supposed to drop this year, so hopefully he's still on track. He kinda got lost in the shuffle so I'm interested to see what he'll do with his first album since they all got kinda "known"

Also J-Zone released a single today. Dudes great, and I seriously recommend checking his old stuff. His album last year was solid too, but he's obviously fallen in love too much with his drumming (which is cool and all that he's learning, but dude used to be really nice with the samples, and that's decreased a bit due to relying on his own drumming). Vocals are on point as well.
