You can get a harness with paw loops that restrict his movement a bit when he pulls. Much, much nicer than a choker.

You just have to be careful because if your dog is stubborn enough that he's willing to throttle himself to spend one more second with his nose shoved in whatever you can cause damage. If he pulls even with a choker, you might consider a "gentle leader" or something along those lines:

Martingale collars pose less of a danger than chokers, they don't fully constrict, and feel like a normal collar. Also never leave your dog leashed on any kind of restriction collar, some pull themselves till they choke out, others figure out it's slack at certain angles and use this to escape.

We used a gentle leader head collar on Kadie for her basic training and search and rescue training. She was never really stubborn though so that made life easy when working with her. I hear that she still begs sometimes, but usually only when they do steak night. Just make sure you feed them AFTER you eat, and you exit/enter a door entryway first. Break those barriers and it makes being the boss much easier.

Well as far as feeding him, I've been lucky enough that he's never had human food and doesn't know what the hell is going on while I'm eating and he usually just goes off and lays down. I'm just waiting for some dickhead to give him something off their plate despite my warnings and turn him into a monster.

Yeah, this doesn't work with labs. One time when I was a kid I dropped a lego minifig's head, and Gus caught it out of the air and gulped it all in one motion, as if it were carried down his throat by inertia.
