I wonder if it will have the fourth part? I will probably have to double dip if so, because in the version I saw, there was only three parts and the wraparound.

With 4 segments each, the first two movies are like 90-120 minutes, so that seems like the 3 seggy version. Now I'm curious about what's going on there.

Here are my pithy comments on it until others have seen it:quote:Aside from the wraparounds, I'm gonna talk like LtKen for a second: VHS Viral is dope as gently caress. A worthy followup to SPAA, the second best doppelganger film of the year, and a found footage version of Zor versus Zatanna from Seven Soldiers.

The magician segment was okay but not great, the rest was dope as gently caress. And I actually really liked the wraparound too! The third segment is called Bonestorm! I love this movie. and I'm pretty sure one of the skeletons flipped them off before it exploded. Dope!

That was a lot of fun. Felt pretty rough around the edges though, you can tell it's missing that extra segment. Yo Hundu, did you get a total Blind Dead vibe from the art design in the third story or was it just me?

The only thing I thought was rough was the wraparound segment. It just didn't really feel necessary in this one at all and the payoff was really predictable/minimal.

I didn't like this as much as the other two but Bonestorm was the dopest poo poo in the history of mankind. The Nacho Viggolando one was good, didn't dig on the magician or the wraparound too hmuch. It just didn't feel like it worked as an anthology as well as the previous two did.

The Magician was just visually really well done. I just enjoyed seeing the "magic trick" stuff for how seamlessly it was presented. I kind of wanted a lot more backstory in Segment Two about what was going on in Demon Antichrist World, but then again, "less is more" and it's probably better not to explain it too much. Segment Three reminded me a lot of Slumber Party Alien Abduction and in a very good way.

Depends on what you didn't like about the first two though, really.

It wasn't dirty at all like the first one and nothing was as interesting as the second one. Magician was boring and seemed like a Tales from the Crypt episode with better CGI, Portal was mostly good (specifically the sense of uneasiness it made me feel), Skaters had funny moments but it was not satisfying overall, and the wraparound story was dull as poo poo. The only good skit was the portal one, and holy gently caress, I don't know where to begin. It was insane. Was that something to do with Satanism? The upside down cross on the blimp... far and away the best skit.

Hated the Magician short (by the end it's just a straight up movie, it abandons found footage, but it never really committed to the aesthetic anyway), loved Nacho Vigalondo's short, and Bone Storm was too messy and frenetic for me to love it but it's admirable. The wraparound story is terrible, it totally wiped out the slow burn development of the tapes' powers from the first 2 in the worst way imaginable. Overall it's probably the worst one yet, but not by much. Say what you want about VHS, it's pretty consistent for a horror franchise.

Magician and Doppelganger were great. Like, they weren't really horror premises, very unconventional for found footage (which Magician broke a bit for the fight but whatever), since the first weird things that happen are not cults, zombies, murderers, or ghosts. They were loving nuts. I like breaks from convention and not knowing where the hell things are going and those are the most what the gently caress was that things I've watched in a long time. Bonestorm was probably the most VHS of the shorts. I didn't mind the wraparound story. What was the fourth story supposed to be?

No Death Set song in the closing credits was sort of a bummer. The wrap-around story was, as with the second movie, conceptually interesting but fell flat in execution. Nacho Vigalondo's short was easily the highlight, but I liked Bonestorm. The magician short was fine, I guess, but followed the precedent set by The Den and The Tunnel, where found footage horror presented as a documentary doesn't end up doing much for me. Maybe if they'd gotten Will Arnett to play the magician? Overall I liked it, but I would have a hard time recommending it to people. I enjoyed all the segments in this one. There was no dead weight like that awful Skype thing from the first movie. The highs weren't as high as the hotel girl or cult segments but the lows weren't nearly as low either. Worth a watch for sure.

bakersfield chimp posted:No Death Set song in the closing credits was sort of a bummer. The wrap-around story was, as with the second movie, conceptually interesting but fell flat in execution. Simon Barrett and Adam Wingard's frame stories are quite underrated, and this new one hurts without them. Although none the shorts here is a total dud - Bonestorm and Dante The Great are actually fantastic, while Parallel Monsters is endearingly doofy - the film doesn't cohere into a whole. It's the difference between a collection of found-footage shorts and a V/H/S movie. Here's the main trouble: V/H/S and V/H/S/2 were about filmmakers. Diegetically, those were put together by the immortal editors in the frame narrative, giving each film a subtly distinct style. The old man in the first film prefers mostly raw footage, while the kid in the second movie films his own stuff, edits multiple sources together, adds score, and so-on. At the same time, there was this ritual aspect to it. The old man's been in the secret society for a while, while the kid is trying to join, but they have the same system for turning a collection of unrelated tapes into something more powerful. It's like they say in part 2: if you present them in the right sequence, the effect is stronger. They may not have been super-scary, but their nuanced deadpan grounded everything else. In V/H/S Viral's frame story, the diegetic editor is an omniscient, malevolent AI that just impersonally hates human beings. The AI is not only the editor of the film but the only one who actually watches the footage at all - it's somehow getting a direct live feed from every camera in LA, before anyone gets a chance to upload it. That's a crucial point: the content of the film is irrelevant, or even random. Why does the AI splice in a documentary about a magician? Why not, I guess. That being said, Bonestorm is the funniest thing I've seen in years. precision posted:Something like that. I took it to be a world where The Antichrist was ruling, or perhaps a world where Man was made in Satan's image rather than God's image - the opposite of our own. The joke in Parallel Monsters is that the monster world is really banal, and Monster Alfonso dreams of escaping into a happier life where his wife isn't literally a massive oval office. The real Alfonso, of course, secretly dreams of weird sexual experimentation - and the punchline is that neither one ends up happy achieving their dreams, because they themselves do not change. The secondary joke-within-a-joke is that the satanic monster world actually is still, despite everything, completely identical to ours.

I'm a big fan of VHS 1 and 2, and I've just finished watching VHS Viral. I'm speechless... I mean... It was one of the worst movies I've seen this year. Magician was hilariously bad and cheap, the second segment was fantastic and then penises with mouths came out and my jaw dropped to the loving floor (I went from "this premise is great" to "I can't believe someone thought it was a good idea to make this" in about 10 seconds), and the skater part was weird, pointless and incredibly silly. The wraparound story also sucked and made no sense. What the hell happened? Why this even came out? Literally every segment from earlier VHS is movies is better than anything in VHS Viral. I remember when VHS was about genuinely creepy stories, and now it's about... gently caress, I don't even know. It's like a clipshow of pure nonsense. What the gently caress was that bizzare scene with the gang and the dog stabbing?! Why everything looks so terrible? Why it's not pure "found footage"? Why it's not even about horror anymore? Man, I really hope this is the last sequel to VHS.

Also that was the dopest part of the second short, I don't know how anybody could think that was bad. Honestly the weakest one for me was the wraparound. I felt like it was a little too sprawling and we never got a clear idea what was happening, and not in the good horror movie way
