Honestly the weakest one for me was the wraparound. I felt like it was a little too sprawling and we never got a clear idea what was happening, and not in the good horror movie way

The basic story is that the protagonist is using the pursuit of youtube celebrity as a way to avoid confronting his abusive grandmother - a fact that strains his relationship with his girlfriend. The malevolent AI, seeing this, possesses the girlfriend, kills her, and turns the resulting footage into a feature film.

The cab sequence and the barbecue sequence are borderline-unrelated, which means that they serve as a contrast. While the protagonist is allowed to survive, other characters are punished for the petty squabbling that distracts them from the impending apocalypse. Both sequences, naturally, end with big end-times explosions.

The shorts themselves are even further removed from what's going on, and are pretty much exclusively linked by the loose theme of making some sort of demonic pact (as the protagonist does).

See that makes sense now but I didn't pick up on any of that the first time through it and I dunno, I feel like the framing device should be the most concise and simple of the stories. It's there to provide a framework not tell an entire shorts worth of story in four chunks. I think I would have liked that better as an actual short, to be honest.

Simon Barrett and Adam Wingard's frame stories are quite underrated, and this new one hurts without them. Although none the shorts here is a total dud - Bonestorm and Dante The Great are actually fantastic, while Parallel Monsters is endearingly doofy - the film doesn't cohere into a whole. It's the difference between a collection of found-footage shorts and a V/H/S movie.

Here's the main trouble: V/H/S and V/H/S/2 were about filmmakers. Diegetically, those were put together by the immortal editors in the frame narrative, giving each film a subtly distinct style. The old man in the first film prefers mostly raw footage, while the kid in the second movie films his own stuff, edits multiple sources together, adds score, and so-on. At the same time, there was this ritual aspect to it. The old man's been in the secret society for a while, while the kid is trying to join, but they have the same system for turning a collection of unrelated tapes into something more powerful. It's like they say in part 2: if you present them in the right sequence, the effect is stronger. They may not have been super-scary, but their nuanced deadpan grounded everything else.

In V/H/S Viral's frame story, the diegetic editor is an omniscient, malevolent AI that just impersonally hates human beings. The AI is not only the editor of the film but the only one who actually watches the footage at all - it's somehow getting a direct live feed from every camera in LA, before anyone gets a chance to upload it. That's a crucial point: the content of the film is irrelevant, or even random. Why does the AI splice in a documentary about a magician? Why not, I guess.

That being said, Bonestorm is the funniest thing I've seen in years.

The joke in Parallel Monsters is that the monster world is really banal, and Monster Alfonso dreams of escaping into a happier life where his wife isn't literally a massive oval office. The real Alfonso, of course, secretly dreams of weird sexual experimentation - and the punchline is that neither one ends up happy achieving their dreams, because they themselves do not change.

The secondary joke-within-a-joke is that the satanic monster world actually is still, despite everything, completely identical to ours.

why is Alfonso from from normal world's wife a "massive" oval office, she seemed a nice wife and all she did was sleep and then fight back against segment's threat.

I mean it was a fantastic short and people who think the twist was stupid are WRONG it's actually awesome, really that IMPROVED the segment for me because before it's like oh yeah satan and cults and stuff yawn, but monster junk is fantastic. If the two alfonso's had compared junk they'd immediately know the two worlds were not alike but why would anyone compare junk it's like the big secret was hiding behind a curtain the background all along but the curtain was their pants anyway that was a great short and I liked it because it was out of left field.

Also Dante the wizard was great gently caress everyone who thinks otherwise. The cheap effects are great because they work not everything has to be michael bay's avengers or joss whedon's transformers or cost a billion dollar, you make me believe a piece of cloth you bought at Big Ben's was evil I'm going to give you some credit there, and who when they go watching a horror movie comes in knowing they're going to see a dope loving WIZARD FIGHT.

I don't see what's so great about Bonestorm. Dumb kids get killed by cult zombies, that's exciting and fresh. The wraparound I liked because I didn't get it entirely and couldn't tell where they were going with it, so if I watch the movies again I'll probably get it and then not like them. Well the parts directly involving Iris and her boyfriend were good. When they took us to some party were we didn't know anyone it was like "why are you introducing new characters we'll only know briefly in the loving wraparound" and then they did it again later.

Also where did we learn the thing was definately a artifical intelligence and its motives and all that and not just some t.v. ghost or something

Well ain't that precious?

I just watched the film, and I really like it. This is the first movie in the series without a really weak segment in it.

I think the explanation for the framing story is that its the VHS collection itself that is causing the events that happen in film. The series has shown that the VHS collection itself has a power over reality, fed by the evil and suffering contained within the tapes. Evil attracts evil, and the boyfriend also thrives on the suffering of others. The collection only has power because the suffering it documents is something people have a taste for.

I think trying to explain the actual mechanics of how the van is doing what it does is pointless. It doesn't matter, because the force behind it is the VHS collection.

"I'M STILL ROLLING!"

"ME TOO, NOW LET'S GO"

This dialogue is in the context of a film about Day Of The Dead, where skeletons are a reminder that life is fleeting, and you should make the most of it. These skater kids have a philosophy, which is why we pause to watch them help a homeless dude.

The enemies, on the other hand, are a literal death cult - pretty much directly associated with the 'Faces Of Death' kid who's only in it to see people get harmed. It's the subtle genius of a Bill And Ted movie.

Wow. I thought there was a pronounced drop in quality in this installment.

As others have said, the first segment felt like a Tales of the Crypt or even Goosebumps episode. A morality fable, very by the numbers, which I guess makes sense if this series gets closer and closer to Creepshow.

The warparound was borderline incomprehensible until I figured out halfway into the revenge porn bit they were doing little mini-stories inside of it as well. I wonder what the wraparound for the missing 4th story was and how if that made it feel like less of a mess?

The second segment had a very cool premise and mostly delivered on it. Like SMG said, the real gag is that Anti-christ Universe is pretty much identical to our own, heck, the wife even references domestic violence laws at the end.

The third segment definitely riffed off Alien Abduction Slumber Party, but the kids didn't come off as natural and believable to me. Could not follow any of the action once the skateboards went swinging.

Felt like the flimmaking took a dip on every level, the writing, acting, camerawork, sound design. The VHS films have all been amateurish in a self-aware way, but whew. This one is Bad.

It's why you're not surprised when the one kid just starts icing the cultists. He's 'bout that life. The cameraman is a cultural tourist, he's in it for kicks, but his subjects are street kids. It's life or death.

It's so good! Very worthy followup to SPAA. I thought what you said about Parallel Monsters was very on point too, considering that Vigalondo has already made a movie about the competing desires of ego, superego and id. The transgression of Darkside Alfonso is so drat good, too, it's easy to miss how Vigalondo jumps right into it. Though they're "thinking the same thing" the timid "real" Alfonso is prompted to transgress by Darkside Alfonso. He creeps in like the Hamburglar. For no other reason, I really like 2014 in film for filling up my slate with doppleganger movies.

The weakness is definitely the frame story, because I had almost no problem with any of the actual stories themselves. It highlights, weirdly, how well made the first two frame segments are, even if they appear to make no sense at all.

The second bit had the most promise and "devolved" into comedy with the dick monsters. The best SCP bit is about an alternate dimension and I kinda thought they'd take a "is nearly the same but something is slightly off in a really unnerving but almost plausible way" not "people literally are demons". I think I almost got almost talked up too much about that segment due to the Slate review which was very vocal about not spoiling the "twist".

CD seems to be almost obsessed with saying people can't dislike a film for not being what they expected but it's a valid stance to have and I sympathize with it.

The best SPC is the book about a civilization of vicious conquerors whose history intrudes further into our own each time someone reads a chapter. Reading some of your comments it seems like I may have been watching a completely different movie. What antichrist AI controlling some supercut of internet videos? I have no idea how anyone made sense of the wraparound, but I guess it might make more sense on a second viewing / not drinking while watching.

I liked the magician / portal segment ideas, though they could have had slightly better payoffs. The death cult one was shot really well I just didn't really care because it felt like "okay this thing is happening for no reason so ... whatever? Okay it's over."

I'm not as upset about it today, but last night I went to bed truly wondering how something like this even got released. I liked the first 2 so much better :(

The frame story is borderline-incomprehensible, but it is possible to break it down.

For starters: the AI - stored in the ice-cream truck's computers - is somehow receiving a live feed from every camera in LA. Hearing the protagonist say that he wants to be 'part of something bigger than himself', the AI targets him and kidnaps his girlfriend. (There are at least two slaves/accomplices in the truck, assisting it with this.)

Copying the girlfriend's image, the AI begins sending a video to random people's phones. Although the video appears to depict a woman in distress, it contains brief snippets of the 'haunted footage' from the previous films. Anyone who watches these videos is put into a trance that, apparently, makes them both aggressive and eager to film everything.

As more and more people start filming this way, the AI begins editing their footage into a feature film about the protagonist's search for his girlfriend. Once the film is complete, the AI splices in more 'haunted footage' and forces the protagonist to upload the whole thing to the Internet - basically doing what the cellphone video did, but worse.

As the editor of the film, the AI specifically shaped the footage into this narrative to make a point that humans are stupid and weak, or something.

Two minor details render the ending ambiguous: 1) the film continues for a few minutes after it's been, ostensibly, 100% uploaded (meaning that the AI was lying about needing the switch), and 2) the end credits are a hypnotic pattern overlaid over the film playing backwards - reversing all the damage and making the last shot of the film the girlfriend standing on the bridge, in the sunset.

I enjoyed the references in the framing story. The opening scene with the police chase going by the window of people watching it on TV is a direct carbon copy of a viral video where the same exact thing happened. The "I like you" girl from the first movie also appears on the scrambled cell phone video for a brief second. The cab scene is a revenge fantasy, punishing a Hunter Moore type character who publishes stolen ex-girlfriend porn. I also have to wonder if what happens to the dog is mocking the fan reaction to SPAA.

The rest were good in different ways, but Bonestorm was awesome. I think the cameraman kid may have been filming for the VHS cult, since he kept trying to get the skaters killed.

I sort of grudgingly enjoyed parts of the previous installments, but aside from the Bonestorm segment this was pretty much garbage. The wraparound story had zero drama or tension or cohesion. The first segment was basically a Twilight Zone episode that discarded all conventions of the found footage genre in order to...gain nothing from the sacrifice. The second one had an interesting premise on which it absolutely failed to deliver, partly thanks to ridiculous hand-puppet demon dicks.

1/4 is not a good average to have. I struggled to actually enjoy this movie.

Apologies for the wall of black text,

With Parallel Monsters I only said "twist" because someone previously said a review called it that, "reveal" is a better term, I guess. It's just that when the Alfonso(was it?) crosses over things were just uncomfortably weird. Again, this is just personal preference but as soon as they compared photographs it really hooked me. Instead of a lovely wedding picture, a cherished life moment immortalised Alfonso 2 had the blood bag/sex object instead. You instantly wonder what the gently caress that is and why in THIS world he'd choose to frame that device instead of a picture of him and his wife. It ramps up from there, the blimp being the apex of it all. It's just all questions, questions, question being asked and then... Cock demons. It just felt like a bit of an anti-climatic punchline. Again, I get that the gag was that their weird genital-monster world seems to act pretty much like our own and fairly mundane to the people living in it, but the Troma-like dongs just quashed the atmosphere and tension that had been built up until that point.

With Bonestorm again I "get" that it's meant to be like a skateboard video and the kids have been set up to be little badasses with the earlier fighting but like with the previous segment theirs this atmosphere and tension that builds from when the "priestess" and the singing monk turn up and that just got my heart absolutely racing. This peculiar, swaying figure in the background with an unearthly voice and the really great looking cultists showing up. I just loved it, then the kids start fighting back and you're right, it flowed into it great for a little bit, but it went on way too long. Then one of them took a time out to provide some background music and that's when it really lost me. It picked up again once they began to run away and the secondary fight was pretty awesome, as well as them
skating away while more and more shadows appeared on the horizon.

So with Bonestorm I guess I wasn't really expecting or wanting to see some skater kids kicking rear end. I was hoping for more bizarre cult activity, which could have still led to having the skeleton chase/brawl at the end?

That's just me personally though. Do we have to spoil VHS 2? Because if I was going to draw a comparison I'd say Safe Haven in 2 is comparable to Bonestorm in terms of very vague story premise. A cult raising their god and innocent victims being caught in the middle. I mean, obviously they're COMPLETELY different in terms of tone and whatnot, but it'd be like in Safe Haven if the demon/zombie turn in the story happened way sooner. Up until then it's all build, build, build and that's what I prefer I guess.
