Several friends on Facebook have been gushing about it and how it can let people read about the Night King or Longest Night or whatever the gently caress background flavor text. It's been hard to not respond with "you know what I'd like to read? The Winds of Winter."

I get that George Absolute Fucker Martin is a crusty old rear end in a top hat and competing with Patrick Rothfuss to see who can write the slowest while putting out side-filler nobody gives a gently caress about, but at this rate even if TWoW comes out, the HBO series will be done in a few years and cover the story's ending and a lot of people aren't going to care to wait until 2025 to read the last book and rehash things HBO's series has already concluded unless they're flat out going to make the TV show go differently at this point. Ending and all.

If GRRM decides to totally change everything after the show air would HBO be able to sue him? I thought telling them the ending was one of their stipulations before moving forward with the project.

Just kidding. He'll never finish it so its just a thought experiment.

Why would they care? Once they're done the series it doesn't really matter what he does as far as they're concerned. If anything him changing the ending would make news and generate more interest in their product.

I swallowed my pride and anger and bought the drat thing, and it looks beautiful. I'm sure I'll hate myself within an hour. GRRM referred to this book as the GRRMarillion. And like the Silmarillion, it will be the last thing I'll read from the author. At least Tolkien got his primary story done before his son released all that back story.

I'll quit bitching about her, but not before I'd like to take all the "absolute fucker" comments in this thread and throw them at her ten fold. She should create her own loving fantasy world by plagiarizing Hitler's collection of Ostara magazine, offensive drawings and all.

Speaking of Robert Baratheon...I've been re-reading the first book via the graphic novels lately and it just really occurs to me...what the hell was Robert's deal?

Okay, so Lyanna was the love of Robert's life, she died, he was so drat upset he was still mourning her years and years later, he called Cersei by her name on their wedding night, that's all obvious. Except

1) Despite loving her so much, he didn't love her enough to give up drinking and whoring. Even SHE recognized this. Even if we chalk this up to the old 'nobility, they have NEEDS' excuse...

2) Robert's view of Lyanna and what she really was has been pointed out by multiple characters to be two very different things. Yet Robert is so besotted with this image that once the war was over and he was crowned king, he basically thrust all responsibility onto his Hands and Small Council so he could lose himself in indulgence for the rest of his life, trying to bury his pain over losing this woman who probably didn't even exist in the first place.

3) Just how loyal was Robert to Stark when it came to the rebellion? The whole think started because Rhaegar either kidnapped Lyanna or she willingly went with him (likely the latter), Ned's brother and father got killed when they tried to get her back, war started. Would Robert have joined up with Ned in the same show of brotherhood if Lyanna hadn't been involved at all?

Is Robert supposed to be an allegory for selfishness or something? Because it honestly reads like he did everything he did because Rhaegar took what was 'his', and when he couldn't get 'his property' back, he basically spent the rest of his life sulking, which is made even worse because what he thought he had existed only in his own head. I have to wonder what planted the idea there to begin with. Was it just his personality? Could all he see was his own wants and needs and how others could serve them?

Robert was this bigger-than-life sort of guy. He loved war, he loved women and he loved to drink. Being a king with all the responsibilities it involved was not his thing at all. He was simply not fit for the role. Predictably, he drowned his sorrows in even more women and drink.

I don't think theres much more to it than that. He was a warrior, his property disgracefully eloped with another man and to save face he said she was kidnapped and went to retrieve her. Its almost exactly Helen of Troy.

That's actually a really good comparison. Robert is Menelaus, going to war because a pretty boy stole his girl. We can look to the Iliad for a likely scenario of what their life would have been like if he'd managed to get her back: depressing, loveless poo poo.

I think Martin's stressing the latter as much as he can without having a character outright state that Lyanna either didn't love Robert (at least as much as he loved her) and wanted to be with Rhaegar instead. Considering Rhaegar basically snubbed his wife for Lyanna in a public setting, and there hasn't really been anything that's shown him to be a crazy gently caress like his dad, maybe Martin's big ending reveal will be that Robert and Ned were in the wrong and everything that went to poo poo is ultimately the fault of the Starks and Baratheons.

Would actually be surprising if the ending isn't that the Targaeryns are back on the iron throne and the major houses are reduced to lesser status through the fighting and backstabbing. Nothing would be a bigger gently caress You than to basically end the series on a note of "things went back to how they'd have gone all along, but now the country's been ravaged by war, and ice zombies.

Sounds more like a long con by Varys and his la-li-lu-le-lo that he's working with trying to create a more efficient centralized and stable state by reducing the nobility's martial power to zero and thinning out the population for a greater wealth per capita.

It's a pretty obvious goal for a cabal of behind-the-scenes manipulators. poo poo Joff even realized how dumb it was to let nobles have armies

In other words they're aiming for something like "Freehold but better" but they're gonna get Absolutist Europe

This ignores all the crazy, sadistic poo poo Aerys did though, also how Rhaegar took off to have his honeymoon with Lyanna instead of doing anything that might help prevent the civil war from breaking out.
