They aren't exactly a yardstick for what is and isn't morally right on any level.

A lot of the backlash about ethnic Halloween costumes is relatively new and it's not something everyone would automatically hear. Those costumes are sold in boxes and they're super common. I think it is valid, even if it's coming from 15 year old girls who have a crush and boring Internet scolds - being a native girl and seeing three Slutty Indians at your party would suck. Dressing up as someone else's culture is kind of a punk move. On a personal level I don't think I'd give a poo poo about Renee Young's Halloween costume if it was Hitler.
