Basically, 9x39mm is meant to be a powerhouse round for suppressed rifles. The bullet is slow, but very heavy and large relative to typical rifles to let it still deal damage.

Has there actually been any real data on how 9x39mm rifles do in the field? I know they're being used in Ukraine and probably Chechnya.

What I'd like is a mashup of a Groza and a Saiga,
An automatic shotgun with a grenade launcher would be devastating.

No need for a dedicated grenade launcher, actually :getin:

edit: Would it be possible to add in this kind of ammo? Or maybe just make shotgun darts that explode on contact?

Arsenal Overhaul has them, they basically kill the gently caress out of anything in 1 or 2 shots.

Before you accept the escort mission you should clear out as many zombies in the area as possible, all the way up to the lab compound entrance where it starts getting all spooky and yellow from psi-emissions.

Dealing with zombies is the same anywhere: they don't feel pain or take much damage from body shots and you have to destroy the central nervous system to actually put them down. Load the Mossberg with slug or dart shells and aim for the head; buckshot isn't really effective unless you can get in close enough to practically touch them. If you have a scoped rifle, that's even better, the Groza is a beast that will take you almost to the endgame if you can stick a scope on it, hard part is keeping it fed properly.

IIRC monolith armor (the suit in agroprom underground, anyway) is still pretty light, and only protects the torso from light gunfire. Zombies spraying you with 9mm are going to hurt really bad, but their accuracy is terrible so if you keep them at a distance you shouldn't take much damage.

Do you know where I might be able to find a scope for that thing? I haven't seen any yet. All of the scopes I saw on the other rifles dropping before this one wouldn't go on, but it might be because it's the custom one and not the normal Groza. Or maybe I was doing it wrong. I don't really know . I figured that Monolith Armor was pretty solid because it was worth so much money, I didn't realize there were different armor classes in the game. I just check all of the numbers and compare them. It looked like it had more bulletproofing, but maybe I misunderstood something. Is there a better piece of armor I could grab that isn't going to totally break the game? I'll definitely try to work on my keepaway game and headshots though. Thanks for the advice!

I just started using them with the USAS-12. Explosive shotgun shells in an automatic shotgun? Everything dies :getin:

Only problem is they're expensive, rare (you can only get them from Nimble in CoP), and heavy.

Just for shits and giggles chamber it with the round the SVU/SVD uses. That would be one awesome gun, considering the grenade launcher.

Custom 5.45mm Groza doesn't allow for a scope, but the iron sights on it are really good. Just keep it in single shot mode and you can nail headshots from surprisingly far off.

The only armor that could possibly "break" your game is the exosuit and you aren't gonna accidentally find it. If you have a Sunrise/Stalker suit, that'll carry you a long way until you score a SEVA or the Green Ecologist suit. The military bulletproof suit is okay in a pinch but does poo poo against environmental hazards, and the Exosuit prevents you from sprinting. The Wind of Freedom suit is also one of my favorite suits...coupled with some sparkler/electric artifacts, stack them and you can sprint forever.

So yeah, definitely pick up a SEVA or the Green ecologist suit ASAP. IIRC they both have 2nd gen night vision which is actually useful unlike the blurry green mess of night vision on other suits, and stacking anti-rad artifacts on them will let you hang out on the mounds of radioactive scrap metal in the garbage all day without a problem, there's a few artifacts up there too!

Also you are using the artifacts, right? If you find yourself running out of health a lot, hide somewhere safe and wear as many +Health artifacts (stone blood, meat chunk, and soul) as you can, you'll regenerate CoD style but don't go into a fight with them equipped since they make you take a ton of damage. Bulletproofing is nice but you really should try to avoid getting shot at all. In vanilla SoC you can't really fix your armor unless you stack 5 spring artifacts so that the springboard and other gravity anomalies actually heal you and repair your suit.

According to the cut documents that are floating around, it appears that the Miracle Machine (what the brain is called) was the result of a failed (or successful, I guess) experiment to create a superior intelligence, probably as a prototype for the C-Consciousness. It was later submitted as a proposal to keep the C-Consciousness 'safe' but ultimately the rival lab who created the Scorcher won out. I guess the same process was used to create controllers, so that brain is probably the prototype controller and it eventually ended up killing everyone in the lab

Yeah, that makes sense. Once I popped it into single shot mode, the thing was a lot more accurate and I wasted a lot less ammunition, so that helped. I have both Grozas, but neither of them take any of the scopes I have.

Oh cool. I made it back to the scientists, and he had some new suits in there. I can't remember the exact name of the one I bought, but it was worth like 95000 Rubles. He also gave a mission to find it and return it, but I kept that poo poo because it was better than any of the rare suits I found in the lab by a lot. I know there's a few wikis out there with them in Russian.

I did try to translate a few but my Russian isn't that great and quite a few of them use rather colloquial language so it's quite difficult.

Here's a pastebin of my documents string table which contains most of them. I'll see if I can find the wiki with the original ones on there:

Soul is one of the best artifacts in the game, up there with Moonlights. Never ever dump them :stare:

Also the Souls, Meat Chunks and Stone Bloods don't give you more hit points, they speed up your natural regeneration rate. Without them equipped you regain health pretty slowly, if you stack up a bunch of Souls or Meat Chunks you'll see your health go from practically nothing to full in no time at all. It makes you take a lot more damage by debuffing your damage resistances though. I used the artifacts for healing a lot, to the point where I had so many medkits I was just leaving them wherever I found them by the time I got to the Red Forest.

The English translation of StalkerSoup / Narodnaya Soljanka definitely has something like this, although I don't know if they are the original documents from GSC. Haven't played it for a while, but among other things I distinctly remember finding several pages from a journal written by a horrified man who was slowly being turned into a controller against his will, then later finding a book of notes taken by the scientists who were performing the experiment. It was surprisingly well done if it was all made up by some random modder (at least, I think it was... as I said, it's been a while since I played that mod)

Oh drat. I've made a habit of selling my extra artifacts when I get them, so I generally only have one or two of each at the most. I just sold some to get more money. drat, I'll hold onto them for next time. So when I'm in combat, I should be using artifacts that buff my resistances? Those diaries are actually modder created, yes. They're part of the ARC mod that also involves things like artifacts being radioactive all the time and containers etc.

You get those diary entries when you kill a controller. So if you want the full story you need to kill a loving ton of controllers.

It all depends on what armor you wear most of the time but I usually have an adventure set that has Stamina and carrying capacity, a set to cover low resistances for anomaly diving, then a couple for HP regen. Its possible to have tons of artifacts and be able to max out any resistance you need at any time but I always found that most of the time after I've gotten to the mid game there are enough med kits around and you can mod some armor to be general purpose enough that 90% of the time I run the Stam set and anything else just takes up space I could be using for that Sweet Loot.

So, I have it on good authority that the wait for Call of Chernobyl won't be much longer if you're looking for a huge freeplay sandbox in CoP.

If I remember correctly the OGSE team also said they'll release the new version this year complete or not, so there's that to look forward to as well.

As some of you know I've been working with the CoP source code.
A quick question I have: would you guys be willing to endure longer loading times under DX10 & 11 if it meant having brand new shader effects under those modes? If not it means restricting new graphic effects to DX9. As for DX8/Static lighting I'm removing it entirely as it makes certain weapons chrome for people, and just generally attracts a lot of idiots on ModDB that don't understand why static lighting doesn't work well these days. I believe OGSE did the exact same thing.

Yesssss. I played a bit of the CoC beta back in April. It was pretty buggy (save corruptions, mostly) but I was really impressed with it overall, especially the scripting. Yantar was a goddamn warzone with dozens of Mercs, Ecologists and mutants running around and there was barely a hint of that signature STALKER stutter.

What kind of new shader effects? Load times on DX10/11 are already brutal for me, but if it means better optimizations and eye candy in-game, then a little more loading isn't that big of a deal.

Kind of cool I guess, but the fact that as soon as you get a reasonable assault rifle and some medical supplies you can easily knock out one faction after another by just going straight for their HQ. So as such you just go one after the other with little challenge involved. Bit of an update on the AO thing for the Faction War. Ran into huge problems with the scripting (TFW uses a lot of custom scripts to do with weapons it seems) so certain weapons being added to stalkers are crashing the game until I find out exactly what script is causing it.

Right now this involves going through every new weapon, spawning it on myself and stalkers and seeing what exactly is causing the issue, which is a bit of a pain in the rear end with the amount of weapons Arsenal Overhaul adds. It is definitely one of the new ones causing it, not the remodels of existing ones, so it seems to be an issue with weapon classes etc.

e: As for the github suggestion, it's something I've thought about for a while. I imagine if I were to set it up for one, it would be largely for scripts/configs as huge amounts of meshes/textures probably isn't ideal and they get changed very rarely.

Well right now I've got the M134 working. Another thing I'm looking at is the key manager from Shoker. It basically allows custom keybindings, so you can have stuff like toggle scopes, dedicated buttons for various functions etc.

What I mainly want it for at the moment is to switch on the FN2000's 'computer scope', which basically acts sort of like the binoculars and highlights stalkers/mutants with a custom overlay.

Same. Playing for Defiance I figured that the best bet was an AS VAL with a shotgun backup, and I worked my way to it. A fully upgraded VAL is just unfair. At long range it comes with PSO-1 mount by default and it's pinpoint accurate in single shots, in short range it has good iron sights and low recoil for a high ROF, and with AP 9x39mm you can kill basically anybody in two shots to the body. Plus it's silenced so occasionally bad guys would fail to notice their buddies falling dead all around them. The only HQ attack that gave me trouble was the Mobile Science Lab, because it's in a mostly open area and it was full of Merc snipers with PSG-1s who would just swivel and kill me instantly with one shot any time they could see me for more than 1 second. I had to reload that one a bunch of times.

Even so you're still guaranteed five or six hectic Stalker shootouts in the process of storming everybody's castle, which is pretty fun. You can also refrain from going for the throat and farm fun shootouts. I think if I played again I would probably try for a self-imposed challenge like only using really shoddy kit, like a Mosin-Nagant and a TOZ-34.

The next major update I'm doing to TFW has re-armed virtually everyone. The Monolith in particular are now equipped with some pretty top of the range poo poo, in addition to modified weapons that are very powerful but very limited as only the Monolith carries the ammo they need (AEK/AK variants with custom ammo etc)

Various factions are having different sniper weapons. The Mosin Nagant is still common, but expect to see more scoped semi-auto AK variants like the Bulgarian Red or Zastava N-PAP

I sort of agree that once you get a decent sniper it's pretty much game over so getting your hands on a really good one is going to take a bit of work.

Playing through as a Loner I am similarly unimpressed. In this mode you have 4 objectives:
-Clear a nearby area of threats.
-Deliver a mutant body part.
-Find me an artifact!
-Shoot some prick.

Which needless to say, gets repetitive.

TFW mod is certainly all about the fighting between factions and trying to extract standard stalker gameplay from it is a non-starter. The option of being a Loner is there simply to allow you to decide when you will join a faction at your own choosing. I suppose a fun experiment would be to wait until it is one very weak faction against one other that has taken over all the rest and then turning things around, but knowing the AI in this game you'd have to be waiting a very long time for that situation to develop.

its with a full house
I'm still getting periodic crashes with TFW due to some of the scripts with AO's weapons :(

In the meantime, I've put together another little mini patch. The Depot in the Garbage (the hangar where you meet Seriy etc.) is pretty much the Clear Sky equivalent of the Bar, I guess (unless you're a bandit)

It's got a radio, but it plays one track over and over on a loop which is OK, I guess. What I've done is modified it slightly so it uses the "car radio" music from DMX. This is basically a radio station in its own right, with stings, call-ins (in Russian, but there's a radio host who takes calls from stalkers in the Zone who talk about their experiences etc.) and a ton of music.

All in all it's about 5+ hours of new content. It works in new games, not entirely sure if it will work in existing saves but I can see no real reason why it wouldn't.

Basically I just want to put it out there to get some feedback from people and if it's positive I'll include it in the next major release.

Just copy the folders into your gamedata directory. Any problems, let me know.

e: As for the github suggestion, it's something I've thought about for a while. I imagine if I were to set it up for one, it would be largely for scripts/configs as huge amounts of meshes/textures probably isn't ideal and they get changed very rarely.

Its when meshes and textures change a lot that git becomes unsuitable because it has to record each of those changes in it's history. So every time you clone the repository you download all of the versions of the (presumably big) binary files.

What kind of new shader effects? Load times on DX10/11 are already brutal for me, but if it means better optimizations and eye candy in-game, then a little more loading isn't that big of a deal.

Thermal vision, SSDO, HBAO+ in DX11, displacement map tessellation in DX11 (currently only uses PN triangle smoothing, and only on a few things), lens dirt, SMAA, reflective surfaces from rain, subsurface skin scattering (depends if my modeler wants to take the time and make all the skin on the models a separate surface), and other eye candy.
The initial loading time would be increased a bit, but I imagine using DX10 in Lost Alpha would be comparable since it also disabled shader caching.

Since you're the only one that responded with an opinion I will likely make all the new graphic options DX9 only (minus the DX11 ones obviously) unless anyone else is interested in these things as well.

Just don't die as much :downs:

Stalker games don't reload shaders upon loading a save-game, they're already loaded. The only loading time that gets affected is the initial load time for each level.

If it's just affecting the initial load time then I'm all for the extra effects, reflective surfaces from rain sound pretty and I'd enjoy them.
