I'm really surprised Tudiya has never mentioned it. It seems like if you can read the mind of every person you come across and this one kid you adopted from demon worshippers suddenly smells like oranges whenever you try to get a psychic bead on him, you'd be pretty suspicious.

But then again, Ishamal probably just told him not to worry about it.

Paradise Lost: Clash of the Heavens!

Some updates are longer than others. I know that some fraction of the goon-mind which composes Enkidel skip around or just go to the options. That is not ideal, because there is important information about the world in the updates, but I certainly understand if you do that and there is no rule against it. For this update, pretty please, read the whole one. I think it would be beneficial to help get everyone back on the same page about Enkidel and the world around you.

Seriously. I mean it. Please just read the whole thing and don't skip to the end? Please? Pretty please? At this point, I am genuinely concerned that some people don't have a good recall of what has happened to Enkidel and we have to fix that. This post should help to a degree.

As you returned to the closest village, you took the strangely pulsating skull with you. Touching the thing makes your skin crawl and you are certain that something truly perverse occurred to make the thing.

The village is not large, it has a small, modest shrine to El and it's single priest, an older man seems rather shocked when you present it to him.

"What is... is it?" he asks, more than a little concerned.

You tell him. Of the skull and of Jesbaam and his band of men and monsters. He should send word to the local kings to track the wretch down. The priest tells you that "You need have no fear of that, word will be sent at once! A sorcerer! We will find him, there is no corner of Ur the fiend will be able to hide!"

You depart, nursing your wounds and return home.

Your Balls make no mention of the Orm. They were furious with Jesbaam but the truth seems to be that they feared far more to lose you, than they lusted for the Orm's great horde of treasure-

An artist's rendering. Based upon imagination, since the Orm eats people.

-and seem relieved to be going home.

And so you return home, to Zepath.

Your have cultivated a fierce loyalty in your Balls, they adore you and the story they tell will not be one to diminish you and as the only witnesses to that days events, who is to say otherwise?

The tale your Balls tell of your adventure is one more favorable to you. They did not know you faked being unconscious and while perhaps you saw flaws in your own tactics as your nursed your aching head, your men saw none. The tale told is that Jesbaam, having escaped from Zepath all those years ago has since delved into the foul secrets of demons and using such powers, enslaved a host of monsters. You challenged him to an honorable duel but the wretch cheated and used foul magics! You fought valiantly, yet were defeated. Your Balls managed to fight him off after Jesbaam attacked them as well, breaking the terms of the duel! Which exactly of your Balls is responsible for this story is unclear, you could likely find out if you wished to.

Stories in Ur often contain a kernel of truth... but perhaps at times, not much more than that?

You have a wife and children... and you Balls scarcely wish them to be in terror at the thought that your throat was slit and you were upon death's doorstep?

When you tell Zebanetha what occurred he seemed genuinely shocked that you found Jesbaam, telling you "I... I thought perhaps a lion of some sort or perhaps some bandits? I had no idea Enkidel. I am truly sorry. I would not have sent you to track down such a man had I known." Zebanetha did not summon you and send you off to track down Jesbaam, you asked him for a task for El. He said he had nothing for you, but the words of a merchant and when he dispatched you, he seemed to think the task beneath your Balls. It seems he was sorely mistaken? He did not even offer a reward, it seemed like a minor thing to him.

It has been a number of years since you went to Baitel, but perhaps your life seems to be passing more swiftly since then? As you recuperate, perhaps you consider who you are and your many adventures?

You are Enkidel, once born amongst savages and cannibals far to the south, but that childhood was long ago. Rescued by Tudiya, King of Zepath, you became the best friend of his young son Danal. You were taught by fine tutors, fed well and learned what it was to be a man of the civilized world.

In learning the basics of combat, you met your friend Paebel and when minotaurs marched upon Zepath as they do once every few generations, you helped him gain the horns of the Minotaur's leader, with which he bought the freedom of his father and you earned a true friend you will surely never lose.

One who saved your life not that long after, a handful of years later when you were kidnapped by Bareen, the High Priestess of the heretical Temple of the Melachim, Paebel stopped a man from putting a knife in you, though you may well have saved him in the same battle. That was a dark day for Zepath, a day to shake the city and one which lost it the house of Barkof who fled the city. Perhaps the most Blooded family in the city after that of Tudiya's direct line, most of his family fled the city in the years ahead.

At the age of 16 you went upon your Manhood trial, to seek an offering worthy of El within the wilderness. There, you met Azzazel, quick to laugh and perhaps a bit mad, he taunted you at times and aided you at others, what was his true nature? You went to the ocean, something that all men of Ur know to be truly mad, for great and terrible horrors lurk within those depths. You avoided such for a time and dived for many pearls, yet were chased from the sea by a horrible monster of eyes and flesh and teeth of immense and massive size.

Yet you escaped, alive. You returned to El's temple in Zepath with an offering superior to any Manhood trial of your generation and all knew El favored your offering when the flames upon the altar burned hot, tall and bright.

There were happy times for you in the years ahead. You squired to Aaron and learned of the wilds beyond Zepath and how to survive in them. From Chait, you learned the bow, an unpopular weapon in Zepath and one used by few except those who hunt wild game.

In time you found true love in the arms of your childhood friend Naomi and when you asked to marry her, Tudiya set the price at a hundred monster foreskins.

You learned how to fight in the Zepathan style from the old grizzled merchant Agamemnon and formed the Balls of Labaras, promising them glory and riches taken at the tips of your spears, if they would help you win your bride price. The Blooded men of the city had no desire at all to help you, but a few well Blooded youths, seeking to gain fame and glory while still young did join you.

Jassiel, the son of Obel, one of Zepath's Mighty Men. Only 15 when first he joined you.
Ithma, the grandson of Obel, 18 years when he joined you. You later declared him a man and declared him to have completed a manhood trial.
Uriah. A child, only 14, yet he earned Snarl's recommendation when he bribed your dog with sausages and made you laugh when he told you he wished to shame his older brother, your then rival Lullaya.

Gareb. Not out for glory or riches, the old man of your group at 20 years old. His father threatened to disinherit him if he did not see some adventure and so he joined you.

"Billy", who told you his name was Asahel. Perhaps not a man at all, he posed as a run away slave from Ibleam, claiming that Azzazel sent him to find you in a dream.

You gave your group a vulgar and slightly blasphemous name, the Balls of Labaras. You did not expect you and your Balls to find a small city of goblins on your first trip with them, nor did you expect to find a Zviv, a demon of sorts. Yet you found the goblins and you found the Zviv as well and all were slain.

You returned to Zepath rich in glory and were wed to Naomi shortly thereafter, though not before having... a dream of sorts and being made sterile by Ishamal a short time after. She gave you a son, who you named for your departed friend Asahel. Well Blooded men father fewer sons and for Tudiya's adopted son to have his first child be male was seen as a blessing upon the entire city and an occasion for joy.

In the years ahead you slew monsters with your Balls, glory and riches were yours. Minotaurs attacked Zepath again, this time lead by strange beings in silver armor, yet they were sounded defeated and you and your Balls won honor in that battle. When Danal returned from a wildly successful manhood trial far to the south, he brought with him a child he saved from the jaws of Asherah, Ruth, who you later adopted. He brought as well your cousin Bagar, fled into the forests of Athar many years ago to avoid a similar fate.

A short time after you went to Baitel with Danal and your Balls, a fortune in monster bones and a live minotaur.

Along the way you saved the village of Ashkalon from men so foolish as to burn El's shrine there and later heralded the doom of the King of Harmath who died shortly thereafter while trying to storm the city of Tadmor.

You saw the wonders of the interior cities of Ur, towering edifices built by Labaras and his grandsons in ancient days. You saw Baitel itself. You were looked upon favorably by the priesthood there but declined an invitation to join them. You found your brother a good wife and managed to gain a bow of unique value as well.

You returned home from Baitel loaded with riches. In the years ahead such riches grew from hordes taken from dreaded beasts in the wilds and from the wise investments of your wife into cattle. You do not possess the vast dynastic wealth of the Mighty Men, the leading families of the city and do not have vast lands, but your wealth would rate you among the richer traders in Zepath. Should you wish to retire from adventuring, you could easily provide for your family through the end of the lives of your grand children with the riches you now possess.

Driven by a dream or perhaps a vision, you learned of an attack by the forces of Fare upon the rival city of Ibleam. Not just minotaurs, but an entire army of the strange silver-armored figures who lead an assault on Zepath but a few years earlier. Lead by they and... a figure shrouded in shadow.

You warned Ibleam and a great battle was fought there, yet the forces of Ibleam were overwhelmed and the city fell.

Except for El's temple. Having slain a number of demons beyond the city and hoping to rescue the living sons of the King of Ibleam, you went to El's temple.

Unable to identify the sons of the king, you ordered your Balls to grab who they could and flee, even as the invaders marched upon the temple itself.

Uriah lead several of your Balls to defy your orders and make a last stand, calling you a coward. For whatever reason, you ordered your Balls to stay and to fight.

You won a great victory in that temple and saved the lives of hundreds of innocents.

Your deeds in the temple that day boosted you from a hometown hero of Zepath and an adventurer of minor fame in the region, to a regional hero, known and respected in the cities in southwest Ur. Many in Zepath anticipate Tudiya to one day pick you as the next king, something which in the past would have been seen not only as impossible but... insane. You are not a direct relative of Zepa, the mythic founder of Zepath, yet you have done your adoptive line great honor and glory in your deeds.

When reinforcements from Zepath arrived, you chased after the fleeing army deep into the earth.

From that strange place, many captives were rescued.

In the years ahead your wanderlust seemed sated to a degree. You helped to patrol the wilderness with your Balls and trained with Ishamal.

And where does that leave you, today?

At nine feet and six inches tell, it leaves you a giant. At 31 years old, you are the tallest man for many hundreds of miles and except for Baitel and perhaps a few in the other Great Cities which ring it, one of the tallest men in Ur. Your strength seems to grow still and while you are still outclassed by most of Zepath's Mighty Men, you may be a match or superior to a few of them now in terms of raw strength. Yet for that strength, your toughness has not increased as greatly. Were you to try to stab Tudiya or some of Zepath's Mighty Men with a sword, the sword itself is more likely to snap before their skin and flesh could take much injury. While you are tougher than any normal man, the sort of immense toughness even the least of Zepath's Mighty men has is not something you possess.

Your skill with spear and shield is the envy of any of your Balls. Your skill with your bow is unique and but for Chait and perhaps Ishamal you are undoubtedly the best archer in Zepath. Your knowledge of the wilds and of tracking wild game is superb and with Snarls nose to guide you, likewise unique. You continue to learn more of your strange abilities, ones which in ways seem similar to those of well Blooded men but in some ways, different. Perhaps you are simply coming into your strength at a different rate than they, or perhaps you truly are different? Who can say.

In the years since Ibleam, you have spent much time with Ishamal, training with him. You have learned to move small, light objects nearby with an unknown power within you. You are learning to hide yourself from being seen by more than normal senses, yet you only have just begun to learn to do such, your skill with such is limited the cost doing so, immense. You have learned other powers as well, ones you have hidden from Ishamal. What you have come to call "Arrow-Time", where all around you seem to slow, allowing you to make shots of if not impossible accuracy, than ridiculously improbably ones, though the cost to you for each such draw of your bow is great, yet lessening. You have also learned what you have come to call your "Ball-Trance", to somehow coordinate your Balls in battle in a way which increases their prowess in battle greatly and makes them far, far more than the sum of their parts.

Your sons Asahel(11) and David(12) aspire to be a great hero and adventurer one day like their father and they now apprentice to you and your Balls and go with you on your more routine monster hunting trips near Zepath. Such trips are safe and you d not encounter anything which could truly challenge your Balls.

You have pledged to take your daughter Ruth(13) with you as well. She is an unusual child. You have taught her to use the bow and filled her head with strange, alien ideas, that she, a woman is the equal of any man. Ever she ran off to go hunt wild game with her brothers, much to Naomi's frustration. After a recent confrontation with her mother, you told Ruth that you would train her in the family business and sent her to Paebel to learn more of surviving in the wilds and of the bow.

Your Balls desire glory, fame and plunder. Your more recent recruits have yet to get a "big score", but the rest of your Balls are not starving, having managed their riches wisely and not overspending since you had to bail them out years ago. There is no chance at all that any of them plan to quit in the immediate future and if any did, you would still find many volunteers who would wish to take their place.

The Balls of Labara posted:

The Balls of Labaras are now 41 strong, consisting of:

You.

Your five Mighty Sons, Jassiel, Uriah, Ithma, Danal and Nahari. Gareb has not rejoined your Balls.

Twelve Blooded Men of of an age similar to you and your other Balls. They are not being named for the time being. Four of them are replacements for your casualties. None are as strong as your Mighty Sons. They are largely craftsmen of various trades. None are farmers.

Twenty two Common Balls, one of whom is training to be a doctor. Counted among them are Paebel, Eleazar the Adventurer, Jobe the Priest and your smith-Ball Adina.

Your servant Gaddiel and a few slaves owned by your Mighty Sons. The doctor Herophilos

In three years time Ruth will go off to her manhood trial and her brothers, not all that long after. You have lost what may be several months worth of [???] and while you are still superior to any normal man, you are far from your peak.

Oh!

And before we forget!

You often doubt that El exists at all or what he is.

We don't want to forget that bit. The "secretly working with a witch and often in doubt of El bit".

You also consort secretly with the witch Indor who has been giving you magical supplies to aid your Balls in their success for years and without whom you may not have had such immense success! Or at least have a bunch more dead Balls, including Paebel. If Tudiya ever learned of your dealings with Indor, he would disown you. Not "maybe". He would. You know it. You know the man, you have lived with him for years, he would be deeply grief stricken and then disown you. He probably could not and would not exile you as Zepath has a history of soft-rule from it's kings, but that would be the end of your relationship with Zepathan high society. If you fled the city in shame, many, but not all of your Balls would likely come with you. None of your new Blooded recruits would, most of the rest would.

Also, your best buddy Paebel seems to be (one of) the leaders of a resurgent cult worshiping the Melachim, which may actually have been bank rolled from the monster-hunting profits of several of your Balls and thus indirectly, through you! This cult seems to think you speak with the Melachim or something!

Parts of you are not a tradition-defying quasi-heretic, but some parts of you certainly are.

You are a complex individual.

1. I....
(Please read all the options, even if you find one you like. Some have information about the state of things.)

A. Rest for a few months(Three? Four? Seven? Surely not longer than that) until I am at my peak again and then, I lead my Balls to go after the Orm. In the mean time, continue my routine as I had prior, training with Ishamal and slaying lesser beasts upon the patrols that Aaron sends me, to keep the countryside safe. Going after the Orm now is off the table, it lost the last vote.

B. A., except when I am at my peak, I am not going after the Orm, but head south. There are just not that many great and terrible beasts near Zepath, that probably comes with generations of Zepathans exterminating them? But there are more to the south in the wilderness between here and the jungles of Athar. I go on a long trip with my Balls to find something nasty with a nice lair to loot. I can probably find something less dangerous than the Orm. Our trip will be anywhere from one to four months long.
C. B., except I don't wait till I regain [???]. I go now.

D. B., except I am going to the edge of the jungles further south, a prolonged trip. The further I go from Zepath, the more likely I am to find something unusual, or a beast none have seen before. The trip would probably be between four and six months?
E. D., except I don't wait till I regain [???]. I go now.

F. I am done adventuring for now. I tell my Balls I am not going after Big Game again for five years, until my youngest son is a man. A few of my newly Blooded recruits may actually quit over this as they have yet to have a "big" victory with me, but the rest of my Balls, those who have been with me these long years will surely stay with me. We will have a vote to decide what you are doing between now and the Manhood trials of your children, be it training them, training yourself, or getting involved with the issues of Zepathan society. Please don't not pick this option if you like it just because you don't want another vote, doing that makes the Capybaras cry, because they want you to get your choices, but they need information to give them to you!

G. The mountains of Fare contain only death and horrors, yet my skill at sneaking in the wilds is great. The Bnaimokt came out of those mountains and I want to see what is in there for myself. I go to those mountains. Ishamal has warned me before this is a terrible idea.

H. Before your adventure with Jesbaam, your Smith Ball Adina said to you "The first time we went beneath the earth those long years ago, we slew a Zviv! After Ibleam we rescued many. What other unknown riches and strangeness might we find down there? Let us go to the hole the Norcs dug and see what else may be found." Take him up on that idea now.
I. H., but wait untill I regain [???].

J. Before your adventure with Jesbaam, the grizzled retired merchant Agammemnon said to you "It is said that somewhere far to the southeast, at the edge of the Mountains of Fare, nestled among the hills is a land of giants, ruled over by the greatest of their kind, Anak. Those who sometimes wander near Zepath are said to be those who have left that land. Is it true? Who can say? Perhaps you can find out and if not, perhaps you might slay a few giants all the same?" Take him up on the idea, now.
K. J., but wait untill I regain [???].

L. Road trip! I am off to go see the lands of the Kadmonim for myself. I should probably be back in time for Ruth's Manhood trial, unless I plan to take her and my sons with me?
M. L., actually, I am taking them with me! They want to be adventurers? This is training. I can't take Naomi with me, I just can't. That is too unconventional and someone has to manage my household.

N. Something else. Fill in.

If you want to speak with anyone in Zepath about recent events or about any topic generally, go ahead. Normal rules apply. We will sneak it in between now and the next update.

Which it is true, it does not, but to claim this is why they leave it be is a lie. It not for lack of trying, many of them have tried to claim it's hide and none have succeeded. Nor will you. I don't care if we believe in El(even if I do). I don't care if we consort with witches because she's saved our lives and our friends (she has). I do not care if our friends believe in the Melachim and worship them (we should have put a stop to it. We know they do not want worship). I do not care if we use powers against Ishamal's wishes (he deserves to know, we only hold ourselves back by holding the information so closely). A man is more than his thoughts he is also his actions and our constant. CONSTANT. lying and deception is getting insanely out of hand. I should have started doing this earlier but really.

We need to have a serious, private and honest talk with Tudiya, after Jes, who knows if we will ever have the chance?

The melachim worship is probably the lowest on the totem there for me anyway.

Sure, but it's kind of a significant thing if we have explicit direction from the melachim that they don't want to be worshipped. We've only met 2-3 beings that we've presumed were melachim, and like you said, they have been vague.

If you think everything the El priesthood teaches is true, and that there is nothing else going on, and that melachim worshipers are just wrong, and that it's not actually something significant in the plot of this world, well, that makes things seem a lot more boring.

I don't know, whatever ends up happening, it would be no less than deserved. Lies have to come to light sometime, it's time to be done with the webs of deception we have woven.

N-Talk to our father. Tudiya. And tell him everything we have done.

This man has taken us from Cannibals, given us a home, and all of the oppertunities we now possess, if we cannot do him the basic repayment of being straight with him, who are we, really?
I... think I might agree. But we need to impress upon him, that our dealings with Indor were our own and not a result of her bewitching us. We have to be prepared to sever contact with her entirely if we do this. We need to impress upon him that the Melachim worshippers are currently harmless. Though we have to be prepared to accept his judgement of them if we do this. We have to be prepared for many things if we come clean to Tudiya. But lie after lie, it'll collapse on us eventually.

As I said, of the things I want to come clean about, there's really not much here for us to tell Tudiya, I consider this more Paebel's thing to come forward with. I don't think Melachim want or care for worship for -some reason-. I did vaguely consider El was gone/dead/a figurehead for them to rally under to keep their worship balanced to avoid shifts in power if worship=power.

We should have Ishamal there, so we can confess to both of them, and also have him there to keep Tudiya from flying into rage. Indor has done a lot of good for us, she has saved the lives of our balls. She's wanted to do some pretty terrible things though, if we consider monsters as violent but not inherently evil, she's not much apart from Jesabam.

I'm sure this has been covered before, but it just occurred to me how obvious it is that we're half melachim, at least. When we were in Baitel, I think, we learned that melachim are forbidden from laying with men, which perfectly explains our dream from Smythos.

B is good. We lost alot of our [PIE] in that last fight, due to dying, and I think we should go for a test run when we get it all back. Make sure everything is as it was before we go after the Orm.

We get to explore a locale in which very little is known to our society AND stray closer to the Shushem side of things geographically.

Speaking of which...

Diog, has anyone in Zepath or Ur-at-large really expressed a significant or major concern over Shushem and the cannibal villages? We were convinced Danal saw him again (did Danal mention this to Tudiya?) but didn't really touch on the issue too much. Zepath is all about monster hunting and has no qualms about executing blood sorcerers - I would assume that tribes would fall somewhere between those two archetypes to Zepathans since they are known entity/community. Is it far enough way to be out of sight, out of mind as a threat?

B and take our kids too

I like B because it seems like the best chance to take our kids on a big hunt. Danal really needs to stop riding our coat-tails. We've done well by him, but he's Tudiya's only son. He ought to be better known. More, he needs to start gathering fame and allies if he ever hopes to fulfill his oath.

Do nothing until having a heart to heart with Ishamal. Full disclosure to him and only him. Asking him advice about what happened, where we are going in life and what we should do.

We know the storm is coming. Ishamal has to know this. There is something boiling behind the scenes and we need to be in the right position when it comes. I think if we open up to Ishamal, humble ourselves FULLY to him, maybe he can open up.

On coming clean to Tudiya:

If he discovered it on his own, he would disown you. No ifs, ands or buts.

If you came clean and were genuinely remorseful... there is a chance he may not, but WOAH BOY is he going to be piiiiiiiiiised. Like in a "I am not disowning you because El-damnit, your married to my daughter and the father of my grandson, but seriously, gently caress you!" There is also a chance you could still have a good relationship with him, but I want to emphasize he is probably going to be REALLY pissed off.

As the family patriarch, your moral wrongdoings are his responsibility, he may even send you on a suicidal quest(actually suicidal) to redeem yourself in El's eyes while preserving the honor of your son and child. Thems the brakes in living in a society with this sort of family-social structure.

The medicine Indor provides you and your Balls with is vastly cheaper than the sort you could buy from El's temple. They do sell things which, while not looking similar, have similar effects. You can't truly afford it, to buy the amount you need and have used would have run through all of your riches long ago. It is ridiculously expensive.

The stuff you get from Indor is far too expensive for any common man to buy, keep in mind you are either getting goop which can seal a life threatening cut in the body instantly, or, seal it if given rest. This is not Tylenol or a cure for a cold or common medicine. These are things to save a human life after their chest has been split open by a sword. Regular medicine is reasonably priced and reasonably available for the common sorts of problems in Zepath.

And you don't pay for Indor's medicine with silver anyway, you pay for it with your time, secretly helping Puabi get monster bits.

Coming clean to Tudiya means no more medicine from Indor, unless you plan to somehow still keep the secrecy about it.

That was mostly pretty negative. I don't want you to think I am coming down for or against it, I am not, I am trying to give you some more information Enkidel is aware of.

One positive is, you've left a whole lot of evidence, even if so far you have done a VERY good job at covering your tracks. Perhaps telling him would be better than him finding out on his own? Perhaps, regardless of the consequences, you feel bad for deceiving a man who gave you so much and has been naught but kind to you, by defying his most deeply held and cherished beliefs?

Oh, and Jones was there too.

DB, take the kids.

Please don't talk to Tudiya about our heresy, he'll be happier not knowing. If you wanna make it up to him, just stop. Tell him about our consorting with witches when we're older, maybe, as a stupid thing we did in our youth but we're over now. But don't tell him now.

Do talk to Ishamal about what happened though, ask his advice.

This isn't about Tudiya's happiness, or ours. If we're doing something wrong, you're right we should stop. But if we don't think it's wrong, then we shouldn't be lying about it?

Even as Diog said, if he somehow finds out about it. Which would not be -that- hard really, and it's not from us? We're done. We can fix this, we can still get this made right. Tudiya isn't about to kick it any time soon and neither are we.

Lying is what got us into this situation in the first place. More lying isn't going to help.

I also vote with Ark. Ishamal is a good place to start.

Edit:

Further, I pose a question. If the concern is, poor Tudiya, or what will happen to us, why do it in the first place? And if we had reasons, and they were justifiable (Indor has saved a number of lives through our cooperation) then we should own this. Tudiya is not an idiot, he knows what Indor's medicine means and can do, there's still a reason he doesn't support and all we've done is assume he's a big religious dumbass and that ain't cool. We've seen first hand what blood sacrifice can do, and for all we know we've been doing the same to Indor.
