This must be like Pluto's Allegory of the Cave; if you've never eaten anything other than lovely food you don't realize how lovely it really is.

Kind of like bitcoin in that bitcoiners know nothing about credit cards or online payment systems, so they assume that bitcoin has all of these features that other payment systems totally don't have, like being able to purchase things online

it's basically just a very large sandwich, except with extra mayonnaise on the outside to make it look like a cake. if you go to any big family celebration in finland (and apparently in sweden), like a graduation or a wedding, you'll likely see one.

no, microtransactions were supposed to be a thing where you could pay like a nickel for an article or comic or video or something instead of having some sort of all-in-one subscription-based pay model, the idea is that people are a lot more willing to throw small change at things than buy into subscriptions

it's not a inherently bad idea but there were big problems with infrastructure because credit-card based payment systems don't work at that scale so you ended up having to create special accounts which you kept a balance in or something and it just didn't work out

they now use the term for in-app and freemium game purchases but that's not what it meant originally

It’s all over: Bitcoin miner maker to auction remaining assets

http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2014/11/its-all-over-bitcoin-miner-maker-hashfast-to-auction-remaining-assets/

quote:

A federal bankruptcy judge has approved the auction of nearly all of HashFast’s remaining assets, putting the company out of business for good. According to court records, HashFast owes over $40 million to creditors primarily in the United States, but also to some customers in Europe, Russia, India, New Zealand, Australia, and Canada.

Man, BFL is hosed... wait HashFast? I guess they didn't have somebody like Inaba on board because this is the first time I've heard of them.

quote:

In May 2014, HashFast famously declared "we are not scammers." Days later, CEO Eduardo deCastro told Ars during an interview: "We are as poor as church mice."

no dude, the concept behind microtransactions was originally stuff like paying a penny or less per pageload for a website or to watch a video etc. and since paying such small amounts is super impractical over credit/debit that was the original impetus behind having special digital money, since then you could shoot around fractions of a cent without paying a full cent fee on top etc

hence the micro part. 99 cents, 5 bucks etc ain't micro.

i can't get over how people actually believed in the late 90s that "pay 2 cents per web page viewed" was a good idea.

especially with the intention that you would actually make the payment each and every time

especially with intentions that websites would have complex interrelationships such that if you had a referrer from sitex on site y site x would pay for 5 pages on site y etc
