ill never not be amused by how they think $100 is some amazing, life-changing amount of money for an mit student. tuition at mit is $45000 a year. add in books, fees, travel, room, and board, and most students will burn through $250000 or so in loans and spending and scholarships during their four years at the 'tute

$100 would barely pay for part of one book for one particular survey class. and its not a hundred dollars, its a hundred dollars worth of bitcoin, which is only slightly more useful to any given mit student than $100 worth of chuck e cheese tokens. what is a student supposed to do with their 0.31 bitcoins? buy some sheets for their dorm room on overstock?

it also utterly fails to serve the purpose of the experiment. the whole idea was to give everyone enough that they'd start trading it around and using for goods and services with each other. give everyone a bit of money so they can send $10 worth when their buddy covers them for lunch, etc.. giving just $100 worth doesn't really give enough to do that and the weird distribution method they used that resulted in very few collecting means that there's no real way to have that sort of thing. everyone who bothered will just sell it to the guy in their dorm that actually wants it at half price and forget about it.

iirc the MIT bookstore was taking Bitcoins (via BitPay) but since the launch was so delayed it'll probably see the most business from "buying a sweatshirt for my brother with the fake money some weirdo gave me" because everyone has their books already

To be fair, $100 is a sufficient amount to get any student interested, their problem was that they're not actually giving away $100, they're giving away internet funny money that's well-known for its scammy qualities. And in order to retrieve it, you have to sign a form, presumably with your student ID

"Hey kid, want $100 FREE? Just sign here and put your student ID here" -- yeah, that doesn't sound fishy at all

Most people are financially incompetent so this isn't too surprising to me. The daughter stood to have an infinite ROI on the $100 worth of bitcoin, now she gets nothing.

god yes I can't wait until the day one bitcoin is worth infinity dollars, also for the day someone will claim bitcoins will give you an roi of infinity +1

i don't have all the links necessary, but there are four videos in total that show just how much of a jackass he was being that day. from the getgo he tries to give the security people at the door a fee schedule that they'll have to pay him thousands for him to consent to the screening. p. barnes was already on scene for that. he gets told repeatedly that get go that he can't take his camera into the court room. he does anyways and is sitting there recording other people talking to the court about their traffic tickets. multiple bailiffs come in and try to get him to shut off his camera or kick him out. he obstinately refuses to do so. they end up just stopping court and ask everyone to leave. once he leaves, p. barnes and one of the other bailiffs stand to block the door so the rest of the people can just go about getting their tickets taken care of while he proselytizes. the bailiffs all showed the restraint of saints to not taze and cuff him sooner.
