Ric Flair was super popular though. The most random namedrops are middling NBA players that are probably friends with whoever mentions them, like Brevin Knight in a Jedi Mind Tricks song or Kelvin Cato in some other song.

Kind of related but this mix of rap lines about Alonzo Mourning is better than any song posted in this thread

Also as far as the title goes someone should see how many rap thread regulars actually thought Big Ghost was the real GFK

With exception of Crooked I they lack energy or passion. It's like they're rapping just to show us they're better rappers than 90% of our favorite rappers. Like that Royce verse, he was trying to way too hard to show us how little fucks he gives about telling us how little fucks he gives. His delivery was basically "I'm wasting my time doing this but take these bars anyway."

I guess they're just too "cool" for me. I think they're less humble than Jay-Z, actually.

Yeah I agree with you. Crooked I is definitely my favourite, that hip hop weekly thing he did a while back was SO loving good. It might also be that you can't really distinguish them from one another. There's not a lot of variety in the group and they just don't work together. Also someone made a point earlier that Joe Budden sounds better when he's being depressed and poo poo and I guess he can't really jump onto a Slaughterhouse track and talk about poo poo like that. I guess it's the same thing as The Horsemen, they just work better separately.

Horsemen were 1) much more different different 2) never released an album (I think?). Slaughterhouse has always sucked-it's a bunch of dudes who nobody ever cared much about solo, combined to do...absolutely nothing. And they're like some rap boy band-all interchangeable outside of some minor, generic "hook" (the sad one! the funny one! the gangsta one!).

It's not even that they don't necessarily have talent, but they all pretty much came up at absolutely the worst time. 2-3 years earlier they might've been able to carve out a bit more permanent spot, 1-2 years later they may not have been seen as label failures and their sound probably would've stood out more.

Asher Roth?

Anyone listen to the Microphone Check podcast from NPR? I tend to think the interviews go long, but they have a lot of revealing interviews with some big names. Last couple of weeks have been Hieroglyphics, TI and (this week) Run the Jewels. Good stuff.

Album isn't great but 212 was and a couple tracks are nice. I feel like she hides her personality with easy hip hop tropes and it makes her sound like a Nicki Minaj imitation some times. I like her but I expected her album to be mediocre.

Somebody recommends Iamsu every couple pages but I just checked his stuff out like a week ago and it won't get out of my head. His bars aren't special but he has good songs, great driving music.

I like the melodic elements of most new artists a lot more than their raps I guess.

Audience at the Run the Jewels show in San Francisco tonight basically snoozed through Ratking's set. Wiki was visibly pissed and ended up expressing his rage through a really passionate performance.
