Can anyone here recommend me some black metal that is similar to early Satyricon? I never really bothered with their early albums because of how boring they are nowadays, but I gave Nemesis Divina a listen the other week and I absolutely loved it. So yeah, any other black metal that has the same sort of medieval/wintery vibe?

Black metal with a "medieval/wintry vibe" is pretty much the whole second wave, but the ones that first come to mind are Kvist, Taake, Old Man's Child, and even Nokturnal Mortum. And a zillion others. edit: and since this is the band I'm listening to at the moment, why not have some Anatomy. Their second album, The Witches of Dathomir, is what I was looking for, but YT doesn't seem to have it. Both are good, though. late edit: changed that Taake link to one that doesn't sound like rear end. Also I guess I have to give the obligatory warning that Nokturnal Mortum, at the time of the linked album, may have been a band with some NS leanings. Nokturnal Mortum always had those NS leanings, they just got better at hiding them on later albums.

I hate Neo-Nazis and I think racism is incredibly stupid, but I'll be damned if I don't have "My Dreams of Hitler" by Satanic Warmaster on my Ipod. As long as the music's good, I don't really care about the lyrics in black metal.

Fog was also a really good American incarnation of the Norse 2nd wave sound. You'd think I would've remembered them sooner, as I took my title text from one of their songs. Speaking of USBM, though not so much in the Satyricon vein, the two tracks I've heard from the new Abazagorath kind of kick rear end. I probably need to order this. Some weird Attila-esque vocal stuff happening in there -- and there definitely is a DMDS slant to some of the music, if more death metal inflected. http://youtu.be/7ACuecgIGvQ http://youtu.be/QJT3RV6qhog And as long as I'm mentioning De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas, have some Nebel, who really nailed/stole the sound of that album.

Already fully aware of Taake and Nokturnal Mortum, and I dig them both (despite the latter's idiotic politics). Really enjoying the Kvist, Fog, Anatomy and Baptism suggestions though - many thanks!

My favourite thing about Nokturnal Mortum will forever be their evolving logo. Goes from regular upsidedown crosses satanic band to having swastikas, then ditching the swastikas for runes to hide the nazi tendencies and finally pretending to just be really into viking stuff. At least have the decency to stand by beliefs.

They did an alright show, most of it was up and down, they sounded untight in some songs, but the finale was great and went on forever. Weird seeing Necrobutcher and Hellhammer in person. No flying pigs and the whole thing was over before 10 o'clock. Here are the guys that opened, I missed most of their set because a assumed things would start late as usual: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rlhGs9o_67A They were pretty great though nothing exceptional.

Can y'all reccomend some stuff similar to Shining, Leviathan and Xasthur? Crushing depressive black metal, but without that wailing that you'd find in stuff like Lifelover

The temple of fullmoon dudes in the polish scene were probably the funniest example of this, because their whole thing was that they were nazis who made 'death lists' for bands they thought were false and similar things but they were mostly lame nerds. there's a great story about how this one band they considered false was playing a show, so they went along with the idea that they were going to beat the band up and teach them a lesson. What they didn't know was that the dudes in this other band were all huge miners, so the tof guys got their asses kicked by the band they'd gone to beat up.

Seconding Xothist. Thantifaxath and Vorde are also really good though I do not know if they are "depressive".

Thank you all for the reccomendations! Now I'm actually in the mood for the opposite...some slower more clean-ish depressive suicidal black metal/depressive rock. One of my favorite bands of all time is Hypothermia, so more stuff like that...some other examples would be Lifelover, Psychonaut IV, certain of the more mellow Shining songs, etc.

Looking for more black metal with clean vocals. I really like DSBM, bands like Shining Silencer, Thy Light, Make A Change...Kill Yourself stuff like that. Is there any black metal in that style that features clean vocals? If not just BM in general with some clean vocals in it. I know Enslaved does it.
