I'm a big fan of Major Crimes. It had a weak-ish first season, which was mostly due to Mary McDonnell filling Kyra Sedgewick's shoes and far too much focus being put on the Rusty character, but the rest of the supporting cast filled in the gaps (Tony Denison and G.W. Bailey will never stop being amazing, and Michael Paul Chan is a great anchor) and they've been firing on all cylinders since then. It's definitely a different show from The Closer, but it shares enough of its DNA.

Playing House got a thread but it didn't get that many posts, probably because it was on at the same time as other more popular shows. I'm pretty sure nobody made a thread for Sirens but that show was funny as hell and I really look forward to the second season.

Also, I've heard The Fosters is pretty good for a soapy ABC Family Show.
Also, Switched at Birth. I don't think either of those have strong SA followings because they're shows geared towards women.

Also, Devious Maids. This is a show that exists as well.

Other random series nobody here cares about (I'm guessing, don't care enough to check):
Major Crimes
Rizzoli & Isles
Franklin & Bash (ended this year)
Dallas (ended this year)
Satisfaction
Sirens
Playing House
Melissa & Joey
Hot in Cleveland
The Exes
The Soul Man

I would love to hear reports on the quality of all of these series.
:getin:

I enjoy Major Crimes, Franklin and Bash was fun for a bit but got too repetitive after season 2, Melissa & Joey and Hot in Cleveland both feel like they're reusing scripts from nineties TGIF fair from the episodes I've witnessed, the rest I haven't seen--I didn't like Dallas in the eighties and I don't know why I'd like it now.

It started off kind of charming but as the series has gone on it's become increasingly mediocre. The leads don't really have any chemistry with each other and Betty White gets all the money lines so there isn't much left for the rest. Their recent animated episode is possibly the single unfunniest installment of a comedy I've ever seen. It's probably going to run until TV Land gets out of the business of original series, and it's started showing up in syndication. If you watch any one episode after the first season, you've watched them all.

From what I understand, fans of the original Dallas were quite happy with the new version, so it's probably actually good. Old Dallas was great TV.

Borgia

Love/Hate

I loved Showtime's The Borgias if only for Jeremy Irons chewing the gently caress out of some scenery but Canal's Borgia is honestly a superior show and period piece. John Doman completely kills it as Rodrigo and Ryder's Cesare comes across as a legitimate sociopath that believes he's doing what's right. I always felt like Arnaud's Cesare in The Borgias came across as privileged rear end in a top hat who's also into boning his sister more than being a crazy person.

Borgia is p. good, y'all. Latest season's up on Netflix.

This is maybe the only show I ever watched where I didn't laugh at something because it was funny, but because of the pure absurdity of it. It's not like Family Guy style cut-away absurdity, it's in your face straight fuckin nutso absurd. It's also kind of like Morel Orel where you really want to recommend it to people but it makes you wonder whether they'll view you differently for having liked it. That said, I've made my girlfriend watch Morel Orel, but I'll probably never introduce her to Xavier: Renegade Angel.

Is this the first major thing that Jonathan Nolan has directed?

Also, FX is looking to turn Alan Moore's From Hell as a TV series. Depending on how true to the comic they go it could end up as something really special. For example near the end of the book there's a really crazy scene where Jack the Ripper goes on a trip through time as a disembodied head.
