I love those history episodes, especially the one with Reinhard reading up on the history of the Empire and thinking "geez, this is dry, but if Yang Wenli can do it, so can I" karlor fucked around with this message at 18:46 on Nov 7, 2014 |

I'm at episode 80 now and I feel like something is gonna happen in the next 10 episodes that is going to make me cry. I haven't cried at anything since Last Unicorn. Fuuuck, why is this series so good?

I'm glad it didn't take off, that dub sounded pretty awful. I also don't think a show this complex could have a good enough script in english. You'd need brilliant writers, and nobody has the budget for that. This test dub pretty much proves that to me. The Reinhard was especially terrible.

I love Count Mariendorf because even though he obviously supports Reinhardt and benefits from his patronage, he doesn't seem to get swept up in the awe other characters hold him in and several times you can tell that inwardly he's rolling his eyes at Reinhardt's inability to just act like a normal person.

So on a side note, has anyone noticed a game called "Mecha Ace" on Steam? It's a stat-based CYOA, and among other things the setting seems to borrow pretty heavily from Legend of Galactic Heroes - a heavy-handed central government eventually becoming a nobility-based monarchy, a rebellion founded on democratic principles forming the opposition but getting bogged down in corruption and the like, and a small, thin central corridor down which both sides have been relentlessly stalemated for some time. It doesn't really talk about quite the same themes, unfortunately, and it draws a lot of inspiration from other things as well (including one obvious stand-in for Char Aznable), but when I played I thought it was probably the closest you'll get to a personal experience of what it might have been like to be a footsoldier in the world of LoGH. Pretty well-written and well-made, overall. Check it out!

Episode 61, even when Yang is staring down a gun barrel at his near-certain imminent death he still manages to make a Yang as gently caress quip. Alliance Soldier: "As long as you are alive, you are the Alliance's Achilles heel!" Yang: "The Achilles heel is an important part of the body as well, don't look down on it!" Alliance Soldier: "Admiral Yang, cut the crap!" I loving love Yang so much, I mean, is there another character in all of Anime that even comes close to how awesome he is? I really, really, really hope he doesn't die by the end of the series . I don't think I would be able to handle it. I love this show so much and I don't ever want it to end. I'm already sad since I'm a little over halfway through it

Vermain posted:What this analysis is missing is that Reinhardt's plan works, though: he really does unite all of space under his banner, and he really does improve the life of the average citizen of the Empire and reform the corrupt institutions within it. There's several mentions made of his reforms to welfare policy, how he deals with corrupt officials, etc., and even Yang mentions that Reinhardt is, overall, a force for good. The reason Yang opposes Reinhardt in the end isn't because he thinks Reinhardt is a bad person with bad policies, but that there's absolutely no guarantee that the people who follow Reinhardt after he dies will be so beneficent. It's why the series spends a great deal of time continually bringing up Rudolf von Goldenbaum: because whoever follows after Reinhardt could easily be the next Rudolf. He wants democracy because even an idiot like Job is transitory in such a system, whereas autocratic rulers and their descendents can easily rule for decades or centuries, continually following the legacies of their forefathers. Job Trunicht is the single most intelligent character in the series. So calling him an idiot is selling him short.

Job Trunicht may be a lot of things, a liar, a demagogue, pure appearance and charm, interested only in power and its own interest, and seems to have very little ethical or moral principles. So, in short, a consummate politician with the bad habit of underestimating some of his enemies, sure., but he's no idiot.

On rewatch (ep 26) Oberstein almost certainly made up the Lichtenlade thing. Hildegard tells us nothing beyond him having vague plans to backstab Reinhard at some point, and Ansbach regretfully remarking "The Goldenbaums are finished" while he thought he was alone makes no sense if he's working for Lichtenlade, who is a Goldenbaum loyalist, just backing a different one.

I felt it was pretty obvious that Oberstein just needed something to keep Reinhard focused on the future. Furthermore, even though Reinhard is clearly the one with all the power, Lichtenlade is still technically his boss as the prime minister and Reinhard moving against him after the civil war would always be tainted by the fact that it's a coup. By doing it immediately instead, they could blame Kircheis' death on him and sweep him off the table. Now, rather than using the military to seize power, Reinhard was in his right to depose the prime minister and then take his position as the hero of the civil war.
