MTV's Half-hour Comedy Hour had one of my favorite things related to the Cure.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kpqe9Qp0tOI

Speaking of The Cure, they were definitely the first "gothic" music I ever heard, way back in high school and were one of the bands that kept me sane in my tiny, tiny Eastern Montana town. (along with Bad Religion, Ministry, Jane's Addiction and many other things that I decided were definitely not of that place)

I loved everything of theirs up to and including Disintegration until roughly 2002 when, suddenly, I no longer could stand them. Couldn't deal with the music, Smith's voice, the melodies nothing. I'd try to sprinkle a few songs I used to love into random playlists to see if I could recapture my affection for them, but nothing. I just about went as far as deleting all their poo poo from my collection.

Then, seemingly just as randomly around 2012 that all suddenly reversed and now they're back among my favorites, even if I don't listen to them nearly as much as when I was a gloomy teen. That's the only band I've liked where something similar has happened.

Only up to and including Disintegration though, everything after that can still go to hell. :colbert:

I think the opening track on Wish is money, and the "This is a lie" remix from Join the Dots is pretty nice but yeah I totally feel you on this sentiment. I haven't a single gently caress to give for anything after that record, including Bloodflowers (admittedly, the live set from that tour was loving deadly. Closing with "Faith" WHAT?)

Devil Doll were (is?) a super proggy, gothy, metal-tinged ridiculous band that someone introduced me to in my teens when I was listening to Marilyn Manson. He turned to me and went "Oh, you think that's goth? THIS IS GOTH" in a very Crocodile Dundee way.

I say ridiculous because the backstory is a huge pile of absurd statements, possible lies a Residents-level of mystery (Mr. Doctor's name was revealed a couple years back when he wrote a giant book on 7" punk releases in the UK):

quote:

The first work of Devil Doll was The Mark of the Beast, recorded in Tivoli Studios, Ljubljana in the last half of 1987. After being finished, a single copy pressed, in February 1988. The cover to the album was painted by Mr. Doctor himself, who keeps the album in his home to this day. No other copies exist: "This is a painting, not a graphic work".

Later the same year, work on a second composition began. This work, entitled The Girl Who Was... Death, was inspired by the 1967 British television series The Prisoner. 500 copies of the album were originally pressed, of which only 150 were released. These were distributed out amongst the audience of the second live performance of the composition, each with a unique inlay created by Mr. Doctor. Some of these inlays were written in his own blood. The remaining 350 copies of the album were destroyed by Mr. Doctor once he returned home.

That's the way he operated: press up some copies, give 'em away, burn the rest in a bonfire. He hasn't released anything since '96 but insists that he still records on a regular basis, he just doesn't have any interest in releasing anything.

Where have I heard that before?

Those sunglasses really should be aviators. In fairness to TSOM, when Chris says they've actually recorded things, I believe him. I'm pretty confident that there'd be a new album if it was his choice. I just don't think Von has any real desire or need to do another one (which is a shame, as a number of the new, unreleased tracks rank among my favorite Sisters tunes).

Elizium was always my favorite Nephilim album. I always found it a mesmerizing listen with how the whole thing sounds and how well it all flows together. That first EP they did was really sweet too, the one with "Trees Come Down" on it.

Another general recommendation: Asylum Party

Really surprised nobody's mentioned The Birthday Massacre yet. As far as I'm concerned, they're really the only really good original* 'goth' band to come along so far in the 21st century:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tLOfluH8mgQ
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nrmChd_8PfA

Their sound definitely has a lot of crossover with Industrial Metal in a lot of their songs, but a lot of their songs are sublimely melodic and beautiful too:

I know a lot of people are into VNV Nation as far as the newer bands go, but they've always come across to me as a (not-quite-as-good-as-the-original) modernized imitation of Depeche Mode - a niche which, for me, has always been filled by the (in my opinion) much better Melotron.

Anyone here heard of Crawling Chaos? They were a cool little band on factory records(Joy Division's label), but they were fairly experimental and Factory didn't really know how to handle them, so they were shunted to a sub label and then ultimately dropped, which suited the band fine because they hadn't gotten along with the Factory dudes at all. Mostly they sound like post punk, but they vary a lot and they played around with different effects and styles on different songs. I've heard their first 4 albums and can recommend all of them, but I haven't heard anything from after that.

Here's one of their more post punk songs, it's about a dude with dicks all over his body https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gSXImHZLRoM

some more post punk type stuff:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oRi4GjLiRdI

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mpDADEaxZHg

sometimes they do other things like this long jam that could have come out of the krautrock scene:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SLUruwStKlo

or spooky electronics:

I love Faith and the Muse and a good friend of mine was their touring percussionist on one of their more recent tours a few years ago. they range from straight up gothic rock to more celtic influenced early Dead Can Dance style neoclassical pieces with a bit of industrial influence. in a way they were a bit of a "supergroup" as the two principals are William Faith of Christian Death and Monica Richards of Strange Boutique

Birthday Massacre is great, but Birthday Party is better. Although they're closer to punk...they were from that weird period in the 80's where stuff was still really finding it's footings. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wgsJcZro7Yk. It's a Nick Cave project, which kinda explains everything right there, because Nick Cave has always been Nick Cave.

I've also always loved Black Tape for a Blue Girl ever since I picked up a Projekt records sampler from Hot Topic back in the day. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kf7_QrkPTDQ

And I know there's the running joke with Voltaire, but his non-jokey stuff is not bad. Almost Human is still one of my fav albums. He definitely knows his audience way too well and hot drat, that man might as well have a steampunk printing press for all the money he rakes in. (and he's apparently an awesome prof too, a friend of mine wasn't an animation major but took his class at SVA in stop motion and hot drat, that guy is just super talented way way moreso in art than in music)

E: ok, thanks to this thread checked Cruxshadows out again, Rogue's instagram is the most hilarious thing ever, because there's this guy with the big spiky hair, and the boots and the trenchcoat and the shades...with a 4 year old daughter who always seems to be dressed in something disney.

And do y'all count Dresden Dolls in here? Amanda Palmer's solo stuff definitely strays further away from the goth/dark caberet type stuff, but the Dresden Dolls stuff you can hear the influences a lot more. She's absolutely insufferable since she hooked up with Neil Gaiman, but the dresden dolls stuff is still solid, and she's still a great performer.

"Coin Operated Boy" is probably the only song Amanda Palmer has ever done that I don't viciously hate. It also got played at every loving goth night I DJ'd in the mid 2000s.

Still pretty awful that Dresden Dolls would cover "Two-Headed Boy" and Palmer wouldn't even tell the audience it was a cover song. I know so many people who thought she wrote it.

I went to a Dresden Dolls show once and shortly before saw the support act listed online. Edward Ka-Spel and the Silverman sounded like a really weird thing to name yourself. I figured out quickly who they were, but I'd only heard one Legendary Pink Dots song up to then. That song was Just a Lifetime, very calm and melodic, so I went to the show and quite happily settled in for more of that when the lights went down. Seemed to fit well with the Dolls' sound, anyway.

It was a very educational evening.

Let's get some Frank The Baptist up in here. Two pretty good albums from the early-mid 2000s. I should probably get a hold of the third one at some point.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VALwIrJlxv4

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ktWj440edIs

e: my girlfriend has a Dresden Dolls live DVD somewhere where Ka-Spel joins them for the encore, Missed Me, reads the lyrics from cue sheets, throwing one behind himself after every verse and generally giving the impression he's seeing the lyrics for the first time and isn't enjoying them one bit. It's just his performance I'm sure, but it's still hilarious. Especially in hindsight.

So I listened to the new Birthday Massacre album, and.. :smith: I really, really want to like it but it just didn't click for me at all. This album and the previous album just feels so incredibly uninspired, and the "omph" and the magical sense in their music is just gone. Violet, Walking With Straners and Pins & Needles were all incredible in their own way, but the last two albums just feels off.

Any recommendations for bands similar to Birthday Massacre? I really love the heavy synths and Chibi's voice creating something similar to a creepy fantasy adventure.

While we're on the topic of bands that may or may not be counted as 'goth' but will likely appeal to a lot of the people who listen to goth anyways, anyone else like Bat For Lashes?
