you're thinking of the windows 95 and 98 cds, which usually had short non-interactive demos of a bunch of MS products including Encarta on them.

a very large amount of computers sold between Windows 3.1 coming out and like 2000 were sold bundled with full versions of either Encarta or other encyclopedia programs. because they were multimedia and that's what you did. both of the computers my parents bought in the 90s, a Compaq in 1994 and an NEC in 1997 came bundled with Encarta, the latter one was also bundled with "Microsoft Bookshelf" which was like, a dictionary, thesaurus, and a smaller version of Encarta for the "concise encyclopedia" section.

i'm not sure if there even was demos of encarta that actually functioned as standalone programs rather than being collections of screenshots and a demo video.
thanks fishmech, yours is a limited niche but you fill it well

so how does a bitcoin contract work? I guess you tie two addresses to a transaction that points to a text document somewhere that says what the terms are but what happens if the terms aren't met? is it just a v convoluted notary? do real identities get involved with the transaction or just addresses?

the slightly cool thing is that there's a permanent record that nobody can dispute, and nobody at the NSA can just delete your information or whatever

the problem is, worrying about somebody destroying contracts behind your back, instead of just keeping a copy in your own records, is a super crazy person thing to do, but i think a lot of these guys worry that one day there will be no record they ever existed because they are Sandra Bullock in The Net

As to enforcement, they probably do see the need for the government to AGREE that these things are valid, but the current system works just as well, and if you started tying blockchain addresses into real contracts than you just made identity theft that much easier

well yeah but there's no legal framework for saying that address 1zjdnfhfjksmdgdi is contracted with address 1zjfhfufnfbfhd. so it would only really work if addresses were tied to people but that 1. is opposed to the ideals of bitcoin and 2. needs its own verification infrastructure to function
