It's all fairly straight forward, I think. Track drainage is something that I didn't think of, but it's a really good point.

That was a pretty interesting story that I saw on the History Channel back in the day. The Russians basically held hostage a couple B29 crews that emergency landed in Russia for like half the war because they wanted to study their planes. They didn't have SAE tooling to produce the 1/16" (or whatever) aluminum skin for it so they had to vary the thickness of the skin on the plane between 1 and 2mm sheets (or whatever).

There is a story about the incorrectly machined rivet holes being duplicated, I don't know whether it's true or not.

Buran is interesting; due to political pressure the outline design was copied, but systems-wise it was loving awesome. It had an escape system (the Russians weren't convinced the Shuttle did this right) and the Energiya stack was all liquid fuel.

The cost unfortunately was utterly prohibitive, but it made a fascinating companion to the STS programme.

That is an amazing article. I want it to be true so badly because it would demonstrate once and for all that Briatore is an eternal fuckup who couldn't manage a child's school project and ought to be banned from anything to do with adult life, let alone F1.

But the author's quotes being "used without attribution" is the most hilariously bullshit journalism phrase I have ever heard. At least the Daily Mail just goes "our source" and doesn't even try to legitimise the fact that they're making poo poo up.

I was thinking that Ron Dennis has Alonso by the balls, he either signs for them under Ron's terms or he can sit the season out, there's nowhere for Alonso to go unless 3 car teams become necessary and even then I don't think Red Bull or Mercedes would hire him considering their policies.

Such awful contract negotiations.

Starting in 2016, you have to be 18 to get a F1 superlicense. I still think it should be at least 21.

An age restriction is silly, why not make it 'if you are good enough'

It makes sense on an actual drivers licence as it stops a large amount of applications that will usually fail.

On an f1 super licence its not like everyone can apply for one

Because driving an F1 car is a combination of fast reactions and learned experience. You can throw a 16 year old into a car and he can drive the car really fast in a time trial. He won't have the racing experience learned from spending years in the lower series of how to drive in traffic. So you end up with them making GP2 moves and crashing people out for no reason.

The Suzuka Accident Panel finally released it's findings relating to Bianci's accident:

So basically: A pretty rubbish F1 driver was going too fast in tricky conditions, as he slid off the track he panicked and hosed up even more, with this secondary gently caress up being magnified by the lovely team he drove for making dodgy modifications to the safety features of his car. This all resulted in a meeting of head and tractor at motorway speeds.

Good riddance to Marussia, hopefully any back-markers who replace them will hire competent drivers and engineers, and be able to maintain basic standards of safety on the track.

It sort of does. You can be good enough to drive a car fast, but there's no way a 16 year old has been racing long enough to have the wheel to wheel racing experience that someone 21 years old might have.

I hesitate to make comparisons between 2 wheels and 4, but I'm going to do it anyway.

Counterpoint; Marc Marquez. Good enough to carve up people with a decade of experience on him while he was a teenager, in a sport where I would argue the consequences of a mistake are more likely to result in serious injury.
