I've never been to a game store that regularly charged under MSRP. That's been kinda the hallmark of brick and mortar locations, you're stuck paying MSRP instead of getting deep discounts, but you're supporting a small business, supporting a play space, and don't have to wait for shipping.

I'm sure there are brick and mortar stores who can run hobby games as loss leaders (probably due to extensive magic sales or other source of easy, extensive profit) but it's certainly not a majority and I would be really reluctant to tell someone buying from brick and mortar to shop for a store that sells below MSRP because there's a good chance that one doesn't exist in his region. It's cool if one does but it's usually a good indication they don't make most of their money selling hobby games in the store.

A wolf was no less a wolf because a whim of chance caused him to run with the watch-dogs.

Yea I take back what I said! I thought under MSRP was the norm these days with many stores around here selling at 10% off.

But definitely don't pay over MSRP for anything X-Wing. It will be back in stock eventually.

Speaking of prices and such, what's making Y-wings so valuable right now?

Are they really that valuable? If the price has gone up, it's probably due to Scum & Villainy coming out soon and the boost that they are getting.

Upcoming buffs from scum and villainy is speculated to make them useful again. I've been gathering gold squadron alternate art cards given as participation prizes during the recent tournaments due to this. Don't know if stressbot will fit in the same ship as the BTL upgrade, but I can see them working alongside such ships.

I was poking around Barnes and Noble's website and saw them offering a used one for close to $40, and a few on Amazon where someone was charging $25 or more for just one of them.

Does anyone know where I can find a list of all the expansion ships and their respective pilot and upgrade cards?

There used to be a good one at http://www.afewmaneuvers.com/ but they seem to have lost their account.

After running it a few times, I'm finding I actually like my Decimator for less competitive games. The key thing is to, as mentioned before, ignore the ramming build entirely (this thing is way too pricey to throw into a furball like that) and instead run it as something more like an actual patrol ship and fly rings around whatever mess the fighters have gotten themselves into while firing in.

I've had the most success with a build of Rear Admiral Chiraneau with Expose at 50 points, and optionally either a Rebel Captive to discourage some return fire or an Engine Upgrade to further boost mobility on that turret. It's pricey. It probably isn't quite effective enough for 'serious' play, but I have a hell of a lot of fun punking small fighters with it while using some cheap TIEs to screen and jam up the opposing formations. Either Four Academies if I'm running the good Admiral with just Expose, or Howl and two if I add in further upgrades.

I've been slowly stocking myself up on tiny miniatures that I've never managed to play more than very short, very small games with (I got distracted with Star Trek Attack Wing as my then partner liked Star Trek more than Star Wars) so my actual experience with the game is pretty small.

At any rate, I now have 1 x Core, Falcon, X-Wing, Y-Wing, A-Wing, B-wing, Firespray, TIE Fighter, TIE Interceptor, TIE Bomber, TIE Advanced. What would be a reasonably balanced list for each side that I could use to show off the game to friends and let them play with cool poo poo?

50 points of rebels would look something like 2 X-wings, with a few points to spare on upgrades. Or an X-wing and one of any other rebel fighter. 3x tie fighters and an interceptor should run you close to 50 points too.

When I've ran the game with newbies in the past, I've tended not to use any upgrade cards or any pilots with special abilities. It usually works but it depends how easily newbies get into the game.

If I know the person and the types of ships they like, i tend to craft a quick squad based around that just so they're more interested from the get go. Then I make may squad to balance at theirs.

That, or I run a small squad with Luke and Vader with generic pilots to fill out the points if I do not know the people I will be teaching. Everyone knows Luke and Vader, and while they may not be the best pilots in the game, having that familiar touchstone for a new player usually makes them more interested. After that, I introduce the good pilots :)

Two Interceptors fits well in 50 points, but an Interceptor and 3 Fighters is flat out impossible. 12 pts for an Academy, 18 points for an Alpha leaves you with 54 points for the four of them at the cheapest possible ships.

drat TSS made me decide to get some X-wing stuff. Well, that and I've been catching up on tabletop and it looks awesome. My lgs does x-wing events too. So I picked up some stuff through some sales to get started. I got 2 core sets an x-wing expansion a tie fighter expansion rebel and imperial aces for $105 shipped. Decent start? I figure my buddy and I can battle and I can go to the local shop some night.

Imperial Aces isn't that great, but the rest is a solid start. Consider grabbing an Interceptor booster and a B-wing booster at some point, too.

Don't get the B-wing solo model. The pilots included aren't very good. All the pilots you want are in the rebel aces set. The only reason to get it would be to get the autoblaster and I think heavy laser cannon.

So I'm going to my first tournament on Saturday, and I'm wondering if the rebel list I've been using against my friends would work in a competitive environment:

Kyle Katarn (HWK 290) (21)
Moldy Crow (3)
Recon Specialist (3)
Blaster Turret (4)

Garven Dreis (X-Wing) (26)

Biggs Darklighter (X-Wing) (25)
R2-D2 (4)

Tala Squadron Pilot (Z-95) (13)

The list comes out to 99 points in total... Honestly, I really enjoy the "focus farm" effect that Moldy Crow + Recce --> Garvin --> Biggs has. It feels really fluffy and fun. The Tala just kind of hangs out on his own, usually as a flanker, and I've always kept him in my lists ever since he finished off a pair of PS1 defenders in one of my games.

I have serious doubts about winning games in my store tournament, though... Maybe as a newer player I should stick with a more forgiving rebel 5 ship netlist (2x Blue with Adv. sensors, 2x Bandit, Biggs)?

It's not bad, although I'd probably drop R2-D2 off Biggs and upgrade the Tala to a Prototype with Chardaan refit and put an R2 unit on Garven or something. I like to avoid spending any extra points on Biggs since he's going to be the first to die anyways. That 4 points is often going to give you 1 or zero shields back, since usually Biggs is dead first or second turn of firing.

The list in general is going to suffer against strong arc dodgers, Soontir, Echo/Whisper, PTL/Engine Keyan Farlander, etc. It's not a bad list though.

If you fly Biggs inventively you can keep him alive (and splitting fire) the entire game. The key is not to use him to facetank all the early game damage, it's too force opponents to avoid concentrating on one ship. Running Biggs an inch behind your kind, or maneuvering to specifically be out of arc sometimes well keep him alive, spread the damage, and let him use R2 to regen shields. For of the last five times I used Biggs, he was either still alive at the end of the game and took upwards of seven hits, or tanked eight or nine shots before dying.

When they spoiled all the ramming stuff for the Decimator I was worried that the ship was so much larger than its base that it might extend over the middle of the base of a ship it bumped, meaning you wouldn't be able to add pegs to the bumpee to clear the obstruction.

This happened in the first game I played with a Decimator, and it wasn't even built for ramming.
