A VAG entry would be kind of interesting. If the WRC entry was anything to go by, it will be 'How much do we have to spend to win our first race?' and the real budget will include years of development work before they made an official entry so they aren't subject to testing rules. It didn't really work out well for Toyota but TTE was a mess in the mid 90s and it never sorted itself out. VAG's rally programme is at its peak, not its shameful cheaty-Pete worse at the moment, so it's a pretty different situation.

Lambo has never really been about motorsports anyways. I also agree with everyone that Porsche would be the best entry. Fun facts: If the Mercedes engine really does prove better than this year, it seems that Romain Grosjean is set to eclipse nick heidfeld in the number one slot for the most dubious record: "most points eithout a win". Also positions 2 through 7 of all time were occupied by drivers who contested the 2014 season. Not sure what to read into that, but it must be something. ..

If you win the Cup and you can find someone who says they will challenge and will agree to it, then you can have whatever loving rules you like next time. The real issue was the court cases about who was and who wasn't a legitimate Challenger of Record (a team that represents the challengers who negotiates the rules for the regatta) and then the Deed of Gift challenges (where the Challenger or event rules are held to be complete poo poo and one team the Defender out) which dragged the whole thing out even more. You ended up with ridiculous bullshit like a trimaran vs. a cat and only two syndicates in it. I don't even think they bothered showing that on TV down here. When we finally got an actual regatta, the new cats were so expensive and unpredictable that they killed someone, the defender crashed their own boat and there were only three teams challenging, one of which was from the team who died and they never really recovered. The defenders also didn't provide half the poo poo for the challengers they said they would and they had to build a lot of their own infrastructure. There's all sorts of rumours about Oracle's boat having some wacky self-leveling technology that wasn't strictly legal but TNZ couldn't challenge it because they didn't understand how it worked until it was too late to do anything. Either way, they were beaten in some 'Miracle on Water' style comeback (once Oracle bought in a Brit) but the defenders got more in-house racing with their two boats each other than the challengers did during the actual regatta, much like if Ferrari got unlimited in-season testing and everyone else got nothing. The new Cup is off to a flying start. The Challenger of Record who had never contested the Am. Cup folded after the challenge rules were laid out (funny that) and the event is happening in a country that isn't actually defending the Cup (but happens to be a tax haven). Meanwhile the huge cats that ran last time have been scaled down from 72ft to 60ft but the rules and venue took so long to be announced that it's almost certain that Oracle has a huge development lead because no one else knew the regulations and they did. And the big expensive boats they shelled out hundreds of millions to develop for the last America's Cup - you know, the hugely bad-rear end cats that literally flew across the water - are rusting and in pieces at docksides and will never run again in anger. I'll take a photo of Aotearoa this evening when I go out so you can get the idea of what $200m of America's Cup yacht looks like. To make this post F1-relevant, imagine Red Bull and STR getting to set the rules for the entire grid, season, race length, race format and then everyone trying not to roll their eyes when it becomes a corrupted shitfest that the fans end up resenting. Ultimately the fans finds themselves pining for some golden 1990s era and the sport turns into RED BULL SAILING EXTREME VETTEL FEST like countless numbers of others series that exist yet no one gives a poo poo about. E: Oh yea, and at the next America's Cup, Oracle will be allowed to build two boats to choose from but Team New Zealand and all the other challengers are only allowed one boat for the whole event.
