Anyone heard of a documentary called "No No" about a dude named Doc Ellis who pitched a no-hitter in the 70's while tripping on acid? It looks really interesting but I don't see it on Netflix. As someone who possessed superhuman basketball and pool shooting skills while tripping, I'm anxious to see the film's take on it. Intuition says you couldn't hit the broad side of a barn while on LSD but on more than one occasion, the other side of my brain took over and I was unstoppable.

Just watched the new Netflix documentary Virunga last night and I cannot recommend it highly enough. It's about a huge and stunningly beautiful nature preserve in the Democratic Republic of Congo most notable for its large population of endangered mountain gorillas. After oil reserves are discovered in the park, it becomes the target of two factions in an escalating and complex conflict: a British oil company and a rebel group bent on overthrowing the government. The film itself focuses on a handful of protagonists, including a child soldier turned game warden, a young French journalist, a keeper of orphaned gorillas, and a Belgian prince primatologist determined to save the park. It's incredibly gripping, saddening, and infuriating, and one of those remarkable documentaries which makes you feel like you're truly witnessing something historic unfold. I can't recommend it highly enough (plus it's available on Netflix, so it's easy to watch).

You aren't kidding - this is one of the best documentaries I've watched in a long time. I'm stunned they managed to get some of the footage from the war zone that they got.

So not films like Harvard Beats Yale, but rather The U or Undefeated. With one caveat: that it not be part of ESPN's 30 for 30, because I know about those  Any level from high school to pro.

The simplest thing you could say is that it benefits an awful lot of people to maintain instability and weak states in Central Africa, and it's complex because a lot of the weak actors in that region see it that way, as well.

Just finished watching Virunga and it's the best documentary I've seen in a long time and I don't think I'll ever forget it. I just wish there was something I could do. The rangers that protect that park are real, actual heroes.

My very favorite thing (other than the rad theme music) about it is that Milosevic is just another guy in it. It was a couple years before Kosovo and before he was tried at the Hague and whatever, but it is wild to see. It would be like seeing Charles Taylor or something as a talking head in a documentary.
