What I heard last time this theory crafting came up was it either damaged the hole you put the gun food or the food in there didn't like it. Once you put a grenade in the tank, the gun food probably lights up real well.

In the full video, they actually toss two bombs down the barrel. Supposedly the first one damaged the breech enough to let the grenade (or the grenade explosion) reach the ammo inside the turret, but it's hard to tell if the first explosion is the first bomb or the tank gun firing.

In all honesty, I can't fathom how awesome (in both senses of the word) it must be to stand even within 200 feet of a tank cannon. The biggest gun I've had fired near me was a 2-pounder black powder cannon with a quarter charge, and within 30 feet you felt it when it went off.
