All the new Mickey Mouse shorts are fantastic. I really like the art style they use-- it's based in a sort of retro feel, but it's not afraid to veer away from the Disney look and towards

Which is loving sick. I wonder why they don't? It's shouldn't cost them more to air it than whatever cg crap, or that loving "Grandma Got Ran Over By A Reindeer" special.

Grandma got run over by a reindeer is so loving bad

I'll let most things sit on the tv while I'm doing housework or playing Video games or something but I will actively change the channel whenever that bastard comes on.

The Proud Family was a pretty forgettable show but as -worthy as the episode's premise was, the Kwanza episode ruled because as a kid it was the only holiday special I'd ever seen that actually portrayed Christmas as shallow and unsatisfying commercialism in a way that was true to life.

It's ridiculous that the Garfield special isn't on every year. I'm trying to remember what station used to run it, was it CBS?

I'm enjoying Sonic Boom by accepting that it's really The Eggman Show, with Sonic and his squad being a bunch of boobs who co-star. It isn't destroying my 90s childhood because there already was a poorly budgeted Sonic cartoon that aimed for comedy and wasn't too successful, and unlike a lot of douchebags who only watched the serious fantasy Sonic on ABC, I'm kind of used to this sort of thing.

This show is actually way more successful at comedy, mostly because they're willing to make the longtime mascots often look like idiots (Knuckles is basically Steve Carrell's role in Anchorman at this point, even yelling about how he's yelling). Also, they wisely write for 15 minute stories and not 30 because goodness these thin plots couldn't support that.

To be fair, Robotnik is pretty much consistently the best part of any Sonic series (except maybe Sonic Underground but then again that show was pretty much a mess all together).

Gann Jerrod posted:

Garfield & Friends along with the related specials still remain probably the best things to come out of that franchise in my opinion. Is anything related to that still being reran anywhere?

Saw the pilot for Over the Garden Wall, and have to say I'm not really feeling it. I thought it was gonna be Flapjack in an 1800s bayou setting, but it's not. In fact, it had practically no comedic elements and appears to be a kind of creepy, and relatively "serious" animated show. I'm not really sure how to feel about that.

if you're stuck in the mindset that all animation should be kid friendly or otherwise comedic than yeah you're gonna have a bad time

Scary things happening to hapless adventuring kids, presented light hartedly with a dark undertone. A bundle of shorter stories with no single moral. It's exactly like old timey children's folk stories.

There was a Sonic cartoon wherein Robotnik had basically already won and Sonic was part of a Resistance movement trying to take down his oppressive cybernetic dystiopia. I didn't watch it but I hear it's pretty good.

Sonic the Hedgehog was the kick-rear end mid-90's cartoon about Sonic and his pals trying to overthrow Robotnik, who had really already won. And it had an awesome theme song.

Sonic Underground was a terrible late-90's cartoon about "Sonic" and his two siblings who each played a musical instrument.

Weren't there two at the same time, both with Urkel as Sonic? I remember a Saturday-morning one that was dramatic and serious and a more jokey weekday afternoon one.

That was Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, a more slapstick oriented series focused around Sonic, Tails and Robotnik (which ironically was actually probably the closest in tone to the games of the 3). Sonic Underground came later and I believe was actually a dub of a French made cartoon called Sonic the Rebel. Shows like Code Lyoko and Totally Spies were also imports from France.
